To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that T, SOLOMON 7111s, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slicing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to slicing machines and an object thereof is to provide an improved step by step feeding mechanism in a machine which embodies a carriage moved toward a cutter upon another carriage which in turn is movable parallel with the plane of operation of the cutter. A further object of the invention is to provide a slicing machinewhich will be inexpensive to manufacture and which has the number of machined parts reduced to a minimum. A still further object of the invention is to provide improved means of securing the machine to a suitable support.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which. will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the base frame formed with two arms -2 and 3 projecting horizontally near its upper part. Mounted to reciprocate on the frame 1 is a main carriage 4, having one edge adapted to travel beneath an overhanging lug 9 on a guide 5 formed on the arm 2 and carrying near its opposite edge, a guide rod 6 which is secured to the carriage by depending lugs 7. The guide rod is mounted to reciprocate in perforated lugs or bearings 8 formed on the upper part of the frame 1. Movement of the carriage on the frame may be effected by a shaft 9 jour.-
naled in the frame and having a crank handle 10 or other means by which it is operated. This shaft carries a pinion 10fL which meshes with a rack 11 secured on the under side of the carriage 4 by depending lugs 12, the rotation of the shaft in opposite directions moving the carriage on the frame 1 in opposite directions.
Arranged for movement on the carriage 4 in a line transversely of the movement of the carriage 4 is a table or carriage 13 which is preferably in the form of a plate held to the carriage 4 at opposite edges by two guide strips 14 and 15, the former of which is beveled to correspond with a bevel on the adjacent edge of the table 13 while the latter strip overhangs one edge of the table 13.
This carriage or table 13 may be moved toward a disk knife or cutting device 16 arranged on the shaft 9, this movement being effected preferably by a. step by step mechanism actuated when the table 4 reaches a certain position. This step-by-step mechanism in this instance, comprises a fixed tooth 17 on a plate 18 secured to a lug 19 which depends from the under side of the table or carriage 13 into an open space 20 formed in the table 4. Cooperating with this tooth 17 is a ratchet bar 21 which, in this instance, is pivoted on an upright axis 22 to a lever 23 and is held in coperation with the tooth 17 by a helical spring 24 which is anchored at one end 25 to the tooth har 21 and at the other end at 26 to the lever 23. The ratchet lever 21 projects beyond one side of the carriage 4 so that it may be operated to release the table or carriage 13. The lever 23 is pivoted on an upright axis at 27 to the under side of the frame 4k and has a short arm 28 to which a spring 29 is connected, such spring being anchored at 30 to the under side of the carriage 4 and acting in a direction to hold the end 31 of the lever against a suitable stop, said end being turned upwardly and extended through a slot 32 in the carriage 4. The lever 23 is provided with a cam portion 33 which as the carriage 4 approaches the outer end of its movement, preparatory to returning to effect the slicing of the material on the table 13, is engaged by a xed portion or projection 34 on the frame 1 and is shifted against the action of the spring 29 to shift the ratchet lever 21 so that the latter, through its engagement with the tooth 17, will Shih ytion 47 at one end, and

This adjustable stop 35 may be in the form of an adjustable slotted plate having steps 36 adapted to be brought into a path of the projection 31 on the lever 23 so as to limit the return movement of said lever, and in this way to vary the movement of the tooth member 2 1 under the action of the projection 34.
The material to be sliced is placed upon the top surface of the table or carriage 13 against the flange 37 on such carriage and it is held in position by a spring arm 33 in the form of a single piece of wire bent to form a loop and having its ends 39 clamped on the outer side of the flange 37 by a clamping plate 40.
In order to protect the user of the machine against injury by the edge of the knife, a guard 41 is provided in the form of a ring segment which has an open portion through which the material may be engaged with the knife and which is secured by screws 42 to the lower part of the frame 1.
A suitable means may be employed foi firmly securing the machine to a table or other support, this means in this instance, consisting of a U shaped member 43 pivotally secured at 44 to the frame 1 between two lugs 45 on said frame and of such size that it may extend around the edge of a table and beneath such edge, its lower end carrying a set screw 46 having a thumb pora loose gripping member 48 at the opposite end.
Inroperation, the table or carriage 13 is moved inwardly on the carriage 4 and the material te be sliced is secured to the table '13 so as to project over the edge thereof which is nearest to the knife, the material being held or clamped to the table by the spring arm 39. The carriage 4 is moved through the handle 10 to the extreme position where it projects beyond the ends of the arms2 and 3. As'it approaches this position, the cam portion 33 on the arm 23 cooperates with the projection'34, thus moving the arm 23 on its pivot 27 and causing vthe tooth member 21 to be shifted in order to shift the table or carriage 13 so as to project a portion of the material into the plane The handle 10 is then turned in the opposite direction and the off as the carriage 4 with the table or carriage 13 moves. Upon the cutting operation the cam 33 moves away from the projection 34 and the spring 29imoves the Alever toward the stop 35 causing the tooth lever 21to ride over the tooth 17 without effecting any movement in the table ory carriage :13. After the material is sliced, the'shaft 10 is then rotated in the first described manner to bring the material again supported upon the other, the carriages having movements at right angles to each other and the movement of the uppermost carriage being effected when the lowerinost carriage has been shifted to a certain position. The mechanism for effecting the movement of the uppermost carriage is of simple construction embodying but two levers, one pivoted on the lower carriage and the other pivoted on such lever and cooperating with the upper carriage. The second mentioned lever may be manually controlled to permit the uppermost carriage to be moved away fromthe cutting knife. The machine asa whole is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and not liable to get out of order.
What I claim as my invention andV desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a slicing machine, a frame, a cutter movable on the frame, a carriage movable on the frame parallel with the plane of operation of the cutter, a carriage for supporting the material to be sliced movable on the first mentioned carriage transversely of the plane of operation of the cutter, and mechanism .for shifting the second mentioned carriage on the first mentioned carriage comprising a lever pivotally mounted on the first mentioned carriage, and a second lever pivotally mounted on the first mentioned lever and cooperating with the second mentioned carriage to shift the latter step-by-step.
2. 1n a slicing machine, a frame, a cutter movable on the frame, a carriage movable on the frame parallel with the plane of operation of the cutter, a carriage for supporting the vmaterial to be sliced movable on the first mentioned carriage transversely of the plane of operation of the cutter, and mechanisin for shifting the second mentioned carriage on the first mentioned carriage comprising a spring pressed lever adapted to cooperate with the frame when the first mentioned carriage reaches a certainV position to shift said lever against the action of its spring, and arlever carried by the first mentioned lever and adapted to coperate with the second mentioned carriage to move the latter step by step toward the plane of operation of the cutter.

In a slicing machine, a frame, a cutter movable on said frame, a carriage movable on the frame parallel With the plane ofoperation of the cutter, a carriage for supporting the material to be sliced, movable transversely of the plane of operation of the cutter, and mechanism for shifting the second named carriage on the first named carriage comprising a lever pivotally mounted on the under side of the first named carriage to turn about an upright axis and having a portion adapted to coperate with the frame for the purpose of swinging said leve about said axis, a spring for shifting said lever in the opposite direction, a lever pivoted to the first named lever to swing about an upright axis and adapted to cooperate with the second named carriage for the purpose of moving the latter step-bystep toward the plane of operation of the cutter, said second named lever having a portion projected beyond the rst named carriage for operation in order to disconnect the second named lever from the second named carriage to permit the latter to be moved away from the plane of operation of the cutter.
5. A slicing machine comprising a frame, a shaft j ournaled on said frame, a disk cutter on the shaft, a crank handle on said shaft, a gear on said shaft, a carriage movable on the frame parallel with the plane of operation of the disk cutter, a rack on said carriage cooperating With the gear on the shaft,v a second carriage movable on the first named carriage transversely of the movement of the plane of operation of the cutter, and mechanism for shifting the second named carriage on the first named carriage when the first named carriage reaches a certain position.
6. A slicing machine comprising a frame having a pair of arms projecting from its upper part, one of said arms having a horizontally extending guide surface with an overhanging portion, and the other of said arms having two projections formed With alined openings, a carriage movable on the guide surface of the first mentioned arm beneath the overhanging portion, a rod secured to said carriage and operating in said alined openings, and a rotary cutter mounted on the frame with its plane of operation parallel with the line of movement of the Carriage.
7. ln a slicing machine, a frame, a cutter .movable on the frame, a carriage movable on the frame parallel with the plane of op eration of the cutter, a carriage for supporting the material to be sliced movable on the first named carriage transversely of the plane of operation of the cutter, mechanism for shifting the second named carriage on the first named carriage comprising a lever pivotally mounted on the under side of the first mentioned carriage to turn about an upright axis, said lever being adapted to coperate With the frame to shift the lever in one direction on said axis, the free end of the lever being extended through the earriage to the upper side thereof, a spring acting on said lever to Inove it in the other direction, an adjustable stop for coperating With the free end of the lever to determine its movement under the action of the spring, said stop being operable from the top of the carriage, and a lever pivotally mounted on the first mentioned lever and adapted to eooperate With the second mentioned carriage for the purpose of shifting such carriage stepbystep toward the plane of operation of the cutter.
