To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ED\VARD J. KINGS- BURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keene in the county of Cheshire, State of New flampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Tractors, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawin and to the figures of referei'ice marked t ereon.
My invention relates to new and useful im rovements in toy tractors.
n object of the invention is to provide a toy tractor driven by a spring motor and having a governor for limiting the maximum speed and also adjustable means for engaging the governor for controlling the speed of the governor, so as to allow the tractor to be driven at different speeds.
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide guides for the tractor belt to prevent the same from jumping off of the wheels and means whereby the wheels may be adjusted to or from each other for tightening the tractor belt to prevent the slipping of the same on the wheels;
A still further object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and effective driving mechanism for the tractor, having certain details of structure and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings' Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved tractor;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view, with the top removed;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view, showing the adjustment of the wheels for tightening the tractor belt;
Fig. 4; is a perspective view of the traction belt, showing it in the form of a chain.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the frame of my improved tractor, which is preferably made of sheet metal and rectangular in form and the end and side pieces secured together by ears 2, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Mounted in the upper end of the rectangular frame is a transverse shaft 3 upon which is rotatably mounted a drum 4 having gear teeth 5 on its outer periphery adapted to drive the wheels, as will be hereinafter more fully described. Surrounding the shaft is a sleeve 6, which has secured thereto a spring, (not shown) the opposite end of which is secured to the drum, whereby the same is rotated upon the winding of the spring. Secured to the end of the sleeve 6 is a gear 7 meshing with a gear 8 carried by the winding shaft 9 mounted in the standards 10, carried by the side of the frame. The gear on the shaft 9 is provided with a ratchet for allowing the ready winding of the drum, but to prevent the unwinding of the same. The shaft 9 is of hollow form and has a notch 11 in its outer end adapted to receive a pin carried by the winding crank, so that the crank may be readily inserted or removed, as is readily understood.
Extending transverse the frame, forward of the drum, is a shaft 12, upon which is carried a pinion 13 meshing with the external gear 5, carried by the drum. The shaft 12 has rigidly secured thereto a disk lei, having adjacent its outer periphery, on one side, laterally extending gear teeth 15 meshing with a pinion 16 carried by the rear end of the longitudinally extending shaft 17. The shaft 17, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, is mounted in the transverse plate 18 carried by the forward portion of the frame and the front end 19 of the frame. The said shaft, forward of the plate 18, is provided with a speed governor which consists of a disk-like member 20 loosely carried on the shaft 17 and having pivoted thereto the weighted levers 21 adapted to fly out and move the disk longitudinally on the shaft according to the rotation thereof, all of which is old and is shown in Patent No. 1,269,089, dated June 11, 1918, issued to Harry T. and Edward J. Kingsbury.
Longitudinally slidable in the upper edge of the frame 1 is a rod. 22 which has its forward end turned laterally, as indicated at 23 in the path of travel of the disk 21 and whereby the rapid rotation of the shaft 17 draws the disk 21 rearwardly and en gages the lateral extension of the rod and prevents the rapid movement of the shaft and thus controls the speed of the spring motor and regulates the speed of the tractor. The rod 22, as heretofore stated, is 1ongi tudinally movable, so that the end 23 is moved to or from the disk 21 and the speed at which the disk may be moved in engagement with the portion or end 23 may be varied and the tractor set to travel at any desired speed. The rod 22 extends to the rearand is connected to a lever 24 intermediate its ends, the said lever being pivoted at its lower end to the frame 1, so that as the lever 2a is moved forward or back-I ward a corresponding movement is given to the rod :22.
The rear end of the frame at its upper end is provided with a horizontal extension 2% adapted to form a seat for the toy figure 25 and 1n front of said seat is a vertical shaft 26 carrying a dummysteering wheel 27. Carried by the frame 1 at all four corners, are the standards 28 supportlng the top 29, which can be removed by having the r standards fitting loosely in sockets inthe frame 1 has secured to the bottom a transverse plate 34:. This plate, as shown,is secured to the bottom of the frame by two bolts 35 and 36 passing through the slots 37 and 38, in the bottom of the frame, whereby the same may be horizontally adjusted.
The ends of the plate 34 are turned upwardly at 39 along the sides of the frame and rotatably mounted in said upturned ends is the axle l0 which extends transverse of the frame and passes through slots ll in the frame, whereby the axle may moved horizontally on the frame and held in its adjusted position. The axle 40 extends out beyond the upturned ends 39 and carries the grooved wheels 41 over which the traction belts 33 pass.
The traction belts 33, as shown, are of chain like form, but could be of a rubber belt corrugated, or any other form of belt, such as a canvas belt. The frame 1 intermediate the front and rear wheels over 7 which the traction belts pass, is extended downwardly and has rota-tably mounted thereon the two shafts 43 and 4 1, which have rigidly secured thereon the pulleys L5 and 4&6 which are adapted to engage the inner faces of the traction belts to prevent the upward movement thereof and to hold the same fiat on the grounder floor so that a greater traction of the belts is obtained.
' The forward upper end of the frame 1 is provided with outwardly and downwardly turned guides 47, see Fig. 2, which extend on the outside .of the traction belts, so that the same are prevented from jumping off of the wheels. 1

what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i f g 1. A toy tractor comprising a frame, wheels mounted adjacent the front and rear of said frame,atraction belt passing around the wheels, a spring motor mounted on said frame for driving said wheels, and means for regulating the speed of said driving means.
