To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KEMP B. ARTHUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable and Separable Studs or Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to fastening devices, and particularly to fastening devices in the nature of studs or buttons, and the general object of the invention is to provide a fastoning device of this nature formed of two parts which are adjustable toward or from each other so asto adjust the length of the stud or button. a
A further object is to provide a construction of this character wherein the two parts of the stud or button may be formed so as to be entirely detachable from each other, or so as to be only adjustable upon each other but not detachable. f i
More specifically speaking,.one of the objects of the invention is to provide a button which may be used as a collar button, shirt stud, cuff button, or the like which is so con structed that it may be shortened for use, for instance, asa stud or for useas a back collar button, or lengthened for use as a front collar button or, if used as a cuff button, can be adjusted so as to be used with stiff cuffs or with soft cuffs where there are a plurality of plies and the button has to be relatively long. i j

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:---

Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that mybutton or fastener comprises two members designated A and B. The member Ais a male member and comprises the base 10 with the cylindrical shank 11 whlch 1s somewhat rounded or tapered at .its extremity. The female member B has a Fig. 2, become gradually less in depth from the point of intersection of the grooves 15 with the corresponding groove 14. The hollow stem 13 into which the stem 11 fits is formed with two diametrically opposed, inwardly projecting studs16which are adapted to engage in the grooves 14: and
also with two inwardly protuberant studs 17 which are disposed intermediate between the studs 16. These inward protuberances or studs 16 and 17 may be formed by punching in the material of the cylindrical shell 13 by means of a prick punch or other like ClGVlCS-z In putting thesetwo sections together and adjusting them, the stem 11 is inserted in the cylindrical stem 13, the members A and B being so adjusted with relation to each other that the studs 16 will enter the grooves 1 1. When this is the case, the two sections A and B may be forced toward each other, the stud 16 traveling in the grooves 14 and preventing any relative rotation of the two sections until the studs 16 aline with any pair of the circumferential grooves 15. The studs 17 will obviously, under these circumstances, not aline with l the grooves 1 1, but will travel over the face of the stem 11 and. when they meet grooves 15, the studs will spring into these grooves,
giving a slight clicking sound which will notify the user that the studs have reached one pair of the grooves 15. Then and only thencan the members A and B be relatively rotated. If the member B is rotated to the left in Fig. 2 the studs 16 will ride along one side of the circumferential grooves 15 and the upwardly inclined bottoms of these grooves will gradually cause these studs to bind upon the shank 11 until the two parts become locked by contraction in their ad j usted positions, thus holding the two parts of the sections A and B of the stud or button in their adjusted position.

By providing the stud 17 it is an easy matter for a person to adjust the button without looking at it, as because of the clicking sound made by the springing of the stud 17 into. the grooves 15, the user "Will know when the sections have been so adjusted as to bring the studs 16 and 17 into alinement with any one. of the series of circumferential grooves 15 and can then relatively turn the two sections'to lock them together. p
I do not wish to be limited to any particular form of button or fastening device, as
. my invention is equally applicable to large buttons or to small buttons. The device, as before explained, is particularly adapted to the construction of collar buttons, as it per- 'mits a single collar button to be adjusted for use either as a relatively long front collar button or relatively shorter rear collar button, or a relatively short stud. The device, however, may be used as fasteners for curtains, as a means for holding together a pluralityof plies of fabric, and obviously the device may be made of various sizes for different purposes; The device may be used for holdlng the curtains of automobiles and motor'boats, carriage curtains, for dratrated in Fig. 4, the grooves letdo not extend to the extremity of the shank 11 but terminate short of the extremity. Then the depressionsor studs 16 are formed after the I shell 13; is slipped over the stem 11..' Inthat case the studs 16 cannot move beyond the extremity of the grooves 14:, and therefore the two sections cannot be detached from each other. r
1 It will be noted that the tapering portion of theshank 11 ofsection A permits it to be readily inserted through a button hole, and inasmuch as the extremity of the shank 11 is tapered, the parts of the button may be readily engaged with each other.
In Fig. ,5, I show my invention as applied to a sample button, that is a button ,designed to hold samples together, though the button might also be used for holding other parts together, as for instance, layers of leather or paper.
In this form of my device, the section A is constructed substantially like the section A previously described except that the shank 11 is pointed, as at 18. The section B operates in a simi- 'lar manner to the section B, except that this section B has the bore of the sleeve 13 extending entirely through the head or base 12. It will be understood that the shank 11 is to be formed with the longitudinal grooves 14 and the circumferential grooves 15, and that the sleeve 13 is to be provided with the depressions 16 and 17. In other words, the button has exactly the same form as heretofore described, except that it is modified slightly for its use as a means for fastening together samples or other layers of material, and the sleeve 13 is relatively short in comparison with the form of button shown in Figs. 1 to 4-. With this construction, the member B can be slipped up and down on the grooved post 11 and thus the sleeve may be disposed eithn adjacent the extremity of the shank or disposed at the base of the shank. By pointing the shank. it may be readily forced through samples of material or through sheets of paper. or any other object to which the button is to be attached, and the head of the button disposed any desired distance from the base.
I claim 1. An adjustable fastener of the character described comprising two sections, one having a cylindrical stem and the other having a cylindrical sleeve fitting over the stem. the stem being formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves and with a plurality of circumferential grooves extending circumferentially from the longitudinal grooves. the sleeve having inwardly projecting studs engaging said grooves.
2. An adjustable fastener of the eharactei described comprising two sections. one having a cylindrical stem and the other having a cylindrical sleeve fitting over the stem. the.
stem being formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves and with a plurality of circumferential grooves extending circumferentially from the longitudinal grooves. the sleeve having inwardly projecting studs engaging said grooves, said circumferential grooves becoming gradually shallower in depth as they extend away from the longitudinal groove whereby to cause the studs to bind within said circumferential grooves upon a relative rotation of the two sections.
3. An adjustable fastener of the character described comprising two sections. one having a cylindrical stem and the other having a cylindrical sleeve fitting over the stem. the stem being formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves and with a plurality of circumferential grooves extending circumferentially from the longitudinal grooves. the sleeve having inwardly projecting studs engaging said grooves, the socket being also formed with inwardly extending studs shallower than the studs which engage the longitudinal groove and adapted to ride over the face of the stem and to spring into the circumferential grooves as the sections are shifted longitudinally on each other to thereby indicate the degree to which said sections have been shifted.
4. An adjustable and separable fastener consisting of two sections, one of the sec tions having a cylindrical stem and the other a cylindrical, tubular sleeve to receive the stem, the stem, being formed with a longitudinally extending groove extending in ward from the extremity of the stern and with a plurality of circumferential grooves extending from the longitudinal groove and each becoming gradually shallower in depth from its point of intersection with the longitudinal groove, the sleeve having an inwardly extending stud adapted to engage in said longitudinal groove to permit the longitudinal shifting of the sections upon each other and engage in the circumferential groove to permit the rotation of said sections upon each other, the sleeve being also formed with a stud adapted to slip over the surface of the stem and snap into said circumferential groove to thereby indicate when the studs are in line with one of the circumferential grooves.
5. An adjustable fastener of the character described comprising two sections, one having a cylindrical stem or tongue, and the other having a cylindrical sleeve fitting over the stem, the stem being formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves and with a plurality of circumferential rooves extending circumferentially from the longitudinal grooves, the sleeve having inwardly projecting studs engaging said grooves, each of said sections having a head, and the sleeved section having its bore extending entirely through the head, the shank or stem being pointed.
