The apparatus 'isconstructcd in (lc ail as hereinafter more specifically desrrihwl and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation showing a vertical furnace provided with my improve ments;

In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
1 is a vertical hot Water or steam boiler of any ordinary sectional type, though the invention is. of course, applicable to other constructions of vertical furnace.
In this furnace 2 is the smoke exit and 3 the furnace casing. The furnace is surrounded by an external casing 4 which is preferably made of some suitable heat insulating material or of metal lined with such material. and which is made completely air tight. This casing is so arranged that the front of the furnace, with the fuel, ashlatontcd Aug. 1 7. 1920.

ln (use it is found that it is not dcsirahle to give the hot products of combustion such a long course over the external surface of the furnace casing, I provide a damper 10 in the front baffle 5 at each side. When these dampers are open the products of combustion may pass at each side directly to the next to last longitudinal flue toward the back of the furnace, thence down this fine and up the flue immediately at the back of the smoke outlet. When the damper 9 is thrown down to the horizontal position, the products of combustion from the smoke exit 2 may pass directly to the smoke outlet 6 giving the benefit of direct draft when the fire is being, started or at such other times as very strong draft is needed.
Clean-out doors ll are provided in the external casing Wherever needed.
I find that there are certain advantages in. introducing heated air into the products of combustion under certain conditions. therefore pIOVltlO the pipes 12 which are led to the space between the two casings near the front and are carried up to the urna p a e a th i v top where the air is discharged to miir with the products of coml'iustion. The lowerend of each pipe may be pnwided with a 0.1mtrolling, valve. The water connections of the heater are shown at 'l4ll5, but of course any ordinary arrangement may be adapted.
As a matter of fact, the external casing and batlies may be applied to any type of vertical boiler, the details being varied according to the specific constrnetimi of the furnace.
I find that with the construction shown I am enabled to secure greatly increased efficiency in the operatioh of the furnace for heating fluids while maintaining under all circumstances an adequate drait.
