Description
tin the sheet metal constituting the by passing the 14 extending WILLIAM H. L. DONALDSOIN, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
AIR-WASHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1920.
Application fled November 3, 1918. Serial No. 835,324.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. L. DON- ALDSON, a citizen of the United States r esiding at 988 Cromwell avenue, St. Pan 1n the county of Ramsey and State of M1nnesota, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Air-'ashers, of which the ollowin is a specification.
dy invention relates to improvements in air washers.
The object-of my invention is to provide a device which shall remove the dust from air entering an internal combustion engine same through a' body of water.
A further object of the invention is to rovide such washer in simple and compact orm and capable of efficiently cleaning the air admitted through the carbureter to such en ne.
n the drawings Figure I is an elevation part of the casing of my air washer, with a lnternal arrangebroken away to show the ment 0 parts, and Fi baflleglused in my was erfor removing an excess "of free moisture from the air before it passes to the carbureter. n the drawings the numeral 10 indicates the cylindrical casing of my air washer which is preferably formed with a ta ered top 10 and bottom 10 the top 10 eing provided with an elbow 11 adagited to be connected with the carbureter o a gas engine, and the bottom 10 bein supplied with air ordinary screw cap 12, to acihtate draining and cleaning the washer, at the lower end of the conical portion 10 of the'casing, I surround the lower part of the cylindrical portion of the casing with a sleeve 13, which isvcrimped at its base upon an annular flanlge horizontally from outside t e ortion of the casing 10. The, sleeve 13 tfius forms an annular water-tight receptacle, open at the to outside the casing 10 to receive the used .in the washer and also to f mtalre for the air entering the casing .as hereinafter described, The periphery of t e casin within the sleeve 13 is rovided with a pfiirality of ports 15 forme base of the cylindrical casm an turning in the flanges'thus produced 01% curved lines to furnish spoon shaped guides 16 directed tan ntially into the mtenor of thecasing, sailf ports 15 being designed to permit the free passage of liquid etween II is a plan of the liquid 7 by cutthe annular receptacle within the sleeve 13 [li'ld theinterior of the casing, and also to a l 10 of the edge of the flan e 17, a point on the outer edge of each bla e being attached to the inner eglge of the flange 1 by any suitable means, such as-solder. 1 thus be apparent that the disk 18 with the attached he casing 10, whic is filled with liquid such as water or oil to a level near the top of-the sleeve 13. f In operation the pulsating suction produced in the carbureter by the movement of the pistons of the gas engine draws air ,into the race tacle formed by the sleeve 13, as indicate by the arrows in F air passing into the casing liquid by way of the ports 15 in a tange tial direction causes the liquid to whirl and absorb the solid impurities in the air which gravity into the base while the purified air moisture is drawn moisture is and between the blades 19 to be drawn into the carbureter through the elbow 11. By these means all objectionable excess of moisture is removed from the air passing into-the elbow 11. The body of liquid which is thrown outwardly and upwardly by the movement of the air impinges against the flange 17, and thence falls back into the body of liquid in the base' of the casing.
I have found that the whirling movement given to the liquid b therapi ly tangential currents 0 air produces an action much like that of a gyroscope, and quently when the motor driven vehicle to which the washer is attached moves over broken or uneven ground so that the washer is tipped out of plumb the revolution of the li n1 is so rapid that it does not spill out o the opening at the top of the sleeve 13.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. An air washer for internal combustion engines comprising a casing adapted to hold liquid in its base, an annular sleeve eurand a conduit openin 2. An air washer for internal conn ii -T 0!) engines comprising a casingadapted to haial liquid in its base, an annular receptacle su1-- rounding the lower art of the casing and open at its top for the admission of liquid and air, a series of ports in the casing opening out of said receptacle, a guide adjacent to and extending tangentially within each of said ports to produce a swirling move- ,ment of the liquid in said casing, a bafile er part of said casing, from the top of the casing to the intake 0 a o'arbureter.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM H. L. DONALDSON.
