Be it known that I, EDGAR KIDWELL, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Battles tor ll ater lube Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
'lF his invention relates to bellies for Water tube boilers oil the series drum and tube type,
and particularly bodies which are located within and longitudinally of the rearward bank of water tubes in order to provide downward and upward passes for the prod nets of combustion among said tubes.
The object oi my invention is to provide a metal battling of simple, cheap, durable and eflicient construction which can be readily applied to or removedt'rom the interior oi the rear tube bank, without the necessity of tearing down a portion of the brick wall or otherwise disturbing the boiler setting.

The batlling, in the preferred form of my invention, comprises rows of elongated metal sections 14 having longitudinal man 1 ginal flanges 15 which are outwardly flared or inclined as shown; the Width of each section being such that when it is disposed longitudinally of'and between two adjacent inner tubes 13, the flanges 15 laterally con tact with the respective tubes, as seen most clearly in Pig. 3; thus bridging the space Hence by arranging a series of the sections end to end the space may be closed throughout any desired part of its length. 'l he body or. each trough-like section has formed therein, at spaced intervals, transverse recesses 16 which are intersected by'elongated rectangular openings 17 extending longitudinally of the section. The sections are securely but detachably held in place within the tube bank by l"- head bolts 18, the heads 19 of which are snugly seated in the recesses 16, while their shanks extend forwardly through the spaces between the adjacent tubes ill oi the bank,

The uppermost'baflie sections, 14', located adjacent the drum 10 are curved correspondingly with the upper ends of the watertubes; one of such curved sections and two straight sectionsbeing pret'e "ably used for each space between a pair of the tubes. Each curved section is relatively short and a single connecting bolt therefor is sufl'icient.
The battle sections above described com-- prise steel plates which are readily and cheaply formed and stamped in a die press.
'It will be seen that the several sections can be readily applied to or removed from the interior of the rearward tube bank from the forward side of the latter. To apply a section, it is introduced edgewise between the forward tubes 13 of the bank, that is, at right angles to the vertical plane of the baflle,
and is then positioned to-bridge the space between the adjacent inner tubes. The T- head of one of the bolts is then inserted from the front through a rectangular opening of the section, and is turned a quarterturn and seated in the proximate recess. The clip is then turned to bridge the space between the adjacent pair of front water tubes, and the nut is screwed hard against the clip so as to clamp the latter and the complementary, section against the respectiveopposing tubes. The other bolt and its adjuncts are then similarly applied and manipulated. To remove the sections. or any of them, for renewal or repair of the same or of a tube or tubes, a reverse operation to that above described is followed.
The recesses in which the bolt-heads are seated prevent the bolts from turning when the nuts are being slackened, particularly in the event of the rusting of the nuts after the boiler has been in use. 'hen the boilertubes are spaced alternately wide and narrow, as shown, two appropriate widths of flanged sections are employed. t'lnasmuch as the temperature at the rear of the boiler is relatively low the trough sections may be made comparatively thin without. danger of their burning out: and since the flanges of said sections do not encircle the tubes, but merely touch them in straight lines extending longitudinally of the tubes, the heating surface of the tubes is unimpaired.
Without limiting my invention to the specific details of construction herein disclosed, what I claim is- 1. In a boiler of the series drum and lube type, the combination with the rearward bank of water-tubes, of a series of ballle sections arranged within the spaces between adjacent pairs of inner tubes of the bank, each of said sections comprising an elongated plate having longitudinally-cxtcinling inclined marginal flanges and an elongated openin the inclination of the flanges adapting the plate to be seated against (no tubes and to extend thcrebetwcen, a bolt hav ing its head adapted to be passed through said opening and engage the plate. and its shank to extend forward of the tube bank. a clip on said shank bearing against a pair of front tubes of the bank, and a clamp-nut on the bolt cooperating with the said clip.
2. In a boiler of the series drum and tube type, the combination with the rearward bank of water-tubes, or a series of ballie ser tions arranged within the spaces' bclwcen adjacent pairs of inner tubes of the bank, each of said sections comprising an elongated plate having longitudinally-extending inclined marginal flanges, and having a transverse recess, and an elongated opening intersecting the recess, the inclination of the flanges adapting the plate to be seated against two tubes and to extend thcrebcftween, a clamping bolt having its head adapted to bepassed through said opening and seated in said recess, a clip on said bolt bearing against two adjacent tubes. and a nut on said bolt cooperating with the clip.
3. The herein described ballle section for water-tube boilers, comprising an elongated plate of sheet metal having longitudiimllyextending inclined marginal flanges. and having a transverse recess, and an elongated opening intersecting the recess. the inclination of the flanges adaptin the plate to be seated against two tubes and to extend thcrebetween, a clamping bolt having a T-head adapted to be passed through said opening and seated in the recess, a clip on said bolt bearing against two adjacent tubes, and a screw-nut on said bolt cooperating with the clip.
