Be it known that I, Josnri-r REN AYo'rTn, a subject of the King of `Grreat Britain, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Vin Hand- Tools, of which the following is a speciti cation. j j
The invention relates to. .improvements in hand tools, such as Wrenches, and the like.
)ne of thekobjeets ofthe invention is to provide a neat, convenient and etlicient tool that may be used as a Wrench and for Vother similar purposes.
Another object is to provide a tool having an extension handle that can be elongated or contracted with ease and convenience and which may be made to reach and control objects that are `otherwise in conveniently accessible, such as nuts, bolts or the like.
Another object is to lprovide `a tool containing three concentric tubes, the two inner tubes .being Arotatably connected to` gether and. capable `axial extension, the outer tube serving Aas a jacket or supporting means to hold the tool while in use.
Another object is .to deflect the outer end of the tubular jacket and place therein `a tool or .bit holding socket `to receive a ibit or nut socket -and connect the tool-holding socket With the rotatable `tube by an universal joint. j j j.
Another `object is to provide a head at one end Vof the tool. by which .to rotate the inner tube 'to `give .motion `to the bit holder or nutsocket.
Another object is to Aprovide a double, shiftable 1ratchet,between the handle head and the rotatable tube, whereby the `latter anay be positively .rotated `to lthe right, `or to -the left, by shifting `the ratchet controlling means, or the ratchet `may-be rendered ineffective by `movingthe shifting `part to a selected position.
Another object is to provide means for inserting and for holding hard grease with in the tool Vto lubricate the .moving parts.

The outer holding` tube Ior acket 10 may be knul-led, as at `11, to provide a better surface to be grasped by `the hand, and serves as a. means `by which the tool may be supported .in the hand of the operator. The lower free end of the jacket 10 is laterally deiected, as at 152, and contains a rotatable tool-holdint),l socket A rotatable tube member 14, `concentric with the tube 10 and located. therein, is provided `on its end with means by `which it is. pivotally connected to the univenfnl `joint `member 15. The coperatingjoint member is connected to the end 1G of the socket part 123, so that the socket 13 may be rotated by rotation of the tube 14. rlhe tube member 14 is axially slotted, as at 17, and a blade 1S, fixed to the inner tube member 19 may be slid within the slot 17. The head 31 is hollow and contains an open oiled spring 33, secured in place on tube 22 by pin Si, to hold the lower end 35 of the head 31 in intimate contact with lthe upper surface of the ring 28. rlhe upper surface of the ring 2S is provided with ratchet teeth 36 that are inclined in the opposite direction to the ratchei teeth 2T and 30. Now when the ring 25 is in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the head 31 may be rotated effectively, clockwise or to the right, to positively rotate the socket 13, and when rotated in the opposite direction the ratchet teeth 3G and 3.7 will move the head 31 outwardly against the resilient Now when the ring is moved axially into the upper position, shown in Fig. l, the ratchet tecth 29 and 30 are 'tree to perform their desired and intended function so that when the head 31 is rotated to the left, or anti-clockwise, the socket 13 is thereby rotated in the saine direction, the head being moved outwardly against the resilient action of the spring 33, when it is rotated to the right, so that by holding the ring 25 into either of the positions, the socket 13 may be positively rotated in either direction. It it is desired to remove a nut from the bolt, then theI 2:3 is moved upwardly, in the position sho n in'Aig. 1, and the ratchet teeth 27 and ai) will permit the head 31 to move ircely to the right and will positively move the socket 13 to the left. lt it is desired to screw a nut onto a bolt, then the ring 25 is moved into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, whereupon the ratchet teeth 3G and 37' are free to act. N hen the ring 25 occupies an intermediate position, covering both sets ot ratchet teeth, then both of the ratchets are disabled and the socket 13 may be positively rotated in either direction by the rotation ot the h andle head 31.
In the upper end of the handle head 31 is a screw 39 for securing in place a transversely extending rod 40, which serves as convenient and removable means by which the head 31 may be rotated. The central portion of the rod is knurled, as at Ll1, for convenient location or" rod l() in the head and for offering a surface for contact with the inner end of the screw 39 to more securely hold the rod in place. The tube 19 is preferably groovcd,vas at 12, at intervals, so that when the screw 43 is backed out, the tube 19 may be drawn out of the surrounding coperating tube member lei. The screw 4:3' is then set into one of the grooves, and
the extended parts are thus held in the position unt-il it is desirable to contract them again, as shown in Fig. 2. This may be convenient when the bolt. nut, or screw dcsired to be operated upon, is located at a remote point and at such distance that it cannot be readily reached when the tool is in its contracted condition.
An orifice 45 is made at the lower end o'fi the tube through which hard grease may be forced, so as to lubricate the universal joint 16 and the other moving` parts within the jacket 10. A similar orifice -l-G is made in the head 31 through which hard grease or other lubricant may be inserted within the head.
A socket #1S or other forni ot bit or nut holder may be inserted in the tool socket 13 and held in place by a screw 15), there being a groove 50 made in the socket 18 within which the screw 49 engages tor the purpose of holding it in its operative position. Any tool, other than the socket iS may be in`- sorted in the operative socket lil, such as :i bit, drill, tap or the like.
, When the tool is not in use, the rod Al() may be removed from the head 31 so that the device will occupy a relatively small space.
Thilo I have herein shown a single embodiment of my invention for the purpose of clear disclosure, it will be manifest, to persons skilled in the art, that changes may be made in the general arrangement and coniguration of the parts within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:-
1. A tool of the character described, having in combination a tubular non-rotatable jacket; a bit holder in one end ol the acket; a two-part telescoping, rotatable tube, consisting of an inner and an outer member within said jacket, one member connected to the bit holder; a handle, rotatable on the outer end of the extendable tube member, outside of the jacket and a ratchet between the handle and the outer end of the extendable tube member.
2. A tool of the character described having in combination a tubular non-rotatable jacket; a bit holder in one end of the acket; a two-part telescoping, rotatable tube, consisting of an inner and an outer member, within said jacket, one member connected to the bit holder; a handle rotatable on the outer end of the extendable tube member, outside of the jacket; a double ratchet between the handle and the extendable tube member and means to alternatiif'ely disable one of the ratchets.
3. In a tool of the character described having in combination a tubular non-rotatable jacket, one end of which is laterali i deflected; a bit holder in the deiected end of the jacket; a two-part telescoping, rotatable tube, consisting of an inner and an outer member Within the main body of said jacket; a universal joint connection in said jacket, between one member of the rotatable tube and said bit holder; a handle rotatable on the outer end of the other rotatable tube member; a rotatable ring, having a set of ratchet teeth on. each of its ends, the teeth of the sets inclined in opposite directions; cooperating ratchet teeth on the adjacent end ot said other rotatable tube member; cooperating ratchet teeth on the confronting end o'tf the handle and means to hold the ring .fixed with either set oi' teeth to permit op eration of the other set.
4. A tool of the character described havingl in combinative association a tubular non-rotatable jacket, one end of which is laterally deflected; a hit holder in the deilected end; a rotatable element comprising two telescopic members, in the main body of the fixed jacket; a universal joint connection between said bit holder and one member of said rotatable element; a handle rotatable on the outer end of the other member of said rotatable element, outside of the fixed jacket; a ratchet between the outer end of said member and said handle and a slidable connection between said element members whereby the member connected to the handle may be Withdrawn from the jacket to increase the 'effective length of the tool.
5. A tool of the class described having an outer' non-rotatable jacket; a rotatable tube axially fixed therein; a bit holder in the jacket connected to one end of the rotatable tube; an axiallyextensible member in said rotatable tube, rotatably secured thereto; a handle on said member; a ratchet member on the outer end of said extensible member; a ratchet member on the confronting end of the handle; an intermediate ratchet member arranged for coperation With either of the first mentioned ratchet members and means for selectively securing the intermediate ratchet member rotatably With either of the other ratchet members to rotate the bit holder' in opposite directions.
