UNITED STATES rHoNoenArir-CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1o, 1920.
yApplication lcd December 2, 1916. 'Serial No. 134,719.
T 0 vall whom it may concern .Be it known that I, EDWARDJ. SCHAEFER, 4
a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Hespeler, in the county of Waterloo, Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Phonograph-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
machines and has particularV reference to new and useful amplifying means associated with said machines, l
The object of thejinvention is to'edect cerf tain improvements in the construction of talking machines whereby a more faithful re rodirction of the recorded sound is obtained. To this end the machine is so constructed thatl the reproduced sounds are sweeter, more mellow and to a greater extent free of foreign sounds such as is the case withV machines of the construction heretofore commonlyY employed.
Another object of my Jinventionis tp provide a device of the class described having al plurality of compartments, having the sound amplifying means in a compartment above one containing the sound producing device, thus permitting the sound to travel upwardly. 4
Another object of my invention is to provide a phonographic cabinet oi the class described which is simple in construction, that may be manufactured at a small cost and to provide improved amplifying means.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved phonographic cabinet, will appear from the following detailed description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Itigure 1 is a front elevation of my improved cabinet; and 1 lEig. 2 is a side elevation-thereof section. c,
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of refer-A ence designate like and 'corresponding parts throu hout the various views, C designates the ca inet in its entirety having supporting legs therefor, a top section 1, sodndjamplitying means provided inthe compartment 2 supported by means of a partition 3l separating the first mentioned compartment from the second compartment 4 containing the sound producing device, The front end yof the second compartment 4 being provided partlyin i tion and advantages of my phonograph cab- -inet may be had, and whi e with a plurality of hingedly connected doors i 5 permitting access being had to the sound producing device. v
A turntable 6 is rotatably mounted in the partition 7 separating the compartment 4 from a larger compartment forming a record receiver which may be also used'ior other purposes. The present invention relates to talking y VMy sound amplifying device scomprises a plurality of parallel diagonally arranged other kinds may be used to advantage. I provide a third diagonal board 9 substan- .tially parallel to the board 8. A top section 10 and bottom section 11 are attached to the free ends of the diagonally arranged boards for a purpose hereinafter described, An end section 12 provides a closure means' on one end for the diagonally arranged boards in conjunction with the topsection lO provid ing a drum compartment l) forming an amplifier in conjunction with the board 8. The baseboard 11 'of my amplifying and transmitting means is provided with an opening therein registering with an opening in the partition 3 to receive the throat of a horn 13. The opening 16 is provided for the resonant board 8 of the drum D to give a careful'resonant and increasing'volume of the tone as reproduced.
In usev a record is placed on the turntable 6 which 'coacts with the stylus of the sound producer 14 to produce the desired sound which is transmitted by means of the horn 13, to the sound amplifier from Where it4 escapes throughy openings 15 provided in the front of'iny cabinet. f
From the above description taken in connectionl with the accompanying drawing, it isthought that .a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, opera- Ivhave shown vand described the ampliiyin means as ein# bodying a speciiicstructure, desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. f
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim las new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A. phonograph cabinet having an open front, a plurality of walls therein and spaced from each other to provide multiple chambers, the intermediate chambers being .in communication with each other and one of the same openingthrough the open front of said cabinet, one of the other chambers also opening through the open front of the rabinet, while the remaining chamber is closed.
2.-A phonograph cabinet comprising ai hollow body having an open front, intermediate and outer spaced walls in the hollow body to provide therein superposed chambers Substantially coextensive with each other, one of said Vchambers constituting a main sound passage, another chamber constituting a resonance compartment, said intermediate vwall having an opening establishing communication between the main passage and said resonance compartment, the main passage opening through the front opening in said body, andthe remaining `chambers forming supplemental sound modifying spaces.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
EDWARD J. qCI-IAEFER.
