Description

K. G. THIMAN.
RULE ATTACHMENT.

APPLICATION FILED AUG. 14, 1919.
13 mvENTOR. 15 I 5' 16 v FIG. 51. BYM H15 ATTORNEY.
rarest OFFICE.
KNUT G. THIMAN, CF NEW YORK, N. Y.
RULE ATTACHMENT.
Application led August 14, 1919.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, KNUT G. THIMAN, a subject of King Gustavus V of Sweden, and a resident of 165 East 49th street, borough of Manhattan, city of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rule Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carpentersfolding rules and especially to that class wherein slidable attachment enables the rule equipped therewith to be drawn out to take inside measurements.
The chief object of this invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and perfectly practical attachment for all folding rules, which is easily attached and will enable said rules to accurately measure the inside of boxes between posts, walls or other inside dimension without shifting the rule.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is a view of a carpenters rule equipped with an attachment embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is another view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a full size view of member 9 of the attachment shown in the previous figures.
Fig. 4 is a full size view of member 5 of the attachment' embodying my invention also shown partially in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged end view of the members 9 and 5 shown in the previous views when assembled.
The same numerals refer to the same parts throughout the views.
As folding rules are very commonly used by the carpenters, builders and others, I have thought to increase the utility of all such rules by manufacturing a simple attachment which may be easily and permanently attached by anyone that can handle a screw driver.
My invention comprises a metal strip 9 whose edges 13 and 14 are turned over in such manner as to enable the strip to retain a second strip 5 whose edges 15 and 16 are bent slightly upward to provide beneath the same clearance for the edges of the first strip. This is particularly illustrated in In attaching my invention to a rule, strip 5 is first accurately fitted over the first six inch section 8 of a folding rule and secured Specification of Letters Patent.

by three short screws. Subsequently, strip 9 is slipped on to the outer end and pushed in upon the screwed strip and will be seen to exactly cover the same. This last strip is marked exactly like the section 8 which is covered, and is the substitute therefor in ordinary use. y
In order to cause the parts to register properly, stops 3 and 4 have been provided in strip 5 to engage superposed stops 1 and 2 when the outer strip 9 is drawn inward to the limit. lWhen the latter strip is drawn out, its stop 1 will engage stop 4 in the lower strip as the outer limit.
ifVhen it is desired to measure the distance between a pair of walls 12 and 11, the actual distance being greater than the length of the six foot folding rule 6, 7 used in this case, it is only necessary to place the last section 10 of the rule to the wall 11, and to draw out strip 9 till it touches wall 12. It is then sufhcient to add the reading uncovered on strip 5 and add the same to the length of the rule to have the distance.
It is to be noted, however, that the reading on strip 5 run counter to the normal readings of the rule. This is so for several reasons, among others, so that the iirst portion of the lower strip shall also be rst in notation so that readings will be correct. Also, the readings will be more obvious and less likely to be overlooked.
Naturally, the stops 1, 2, 3, 4 may be differently located according to my own dis cretion, and I may also employ any metal desirable for manufacturing my invention and I may further use my invention for rules using the metric system. These minor alterations I desire to reserve as my right to use within the scope of my invention.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, I desireto obtain by U. S. Letters Patent-- 1. A rule attachment including va strip to be attached to the face of a rule, upturned edges along the sides of said strip provid ing clearance spaces between said upturning edges and the face of said rule, and means to secure said strip to said rule.
2. A rule attachment including a strip provided with slightly upturned edges along its two parallel sides, a second strip slidably disposed upon said first stri and provided with overturned edges enve oping the ioo upturned edges of said lirs't strip to retain both strips in contact7 and means to limit the relative movement of said strips.
3. A rule attachment including a strip t0 he attached to a rule, and numerically marked in the opposite direction to the part covered, a second strip slidaloly attached to said first strip 'having thereon the same numerals and markings as the portion of the rule covered by said iirst strip, and stops upon said first strip adapted to engage said second strip in both eXtreme extended and Withdrawn positions.
Sivned at 132 Nassau street, in the borough of Nanhattan in the county of New York, 15 city and State of New York, this 23rd day of July, 1919.
