UNITED STATES GEORGE E. DU BUQUE, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
DENTAL APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1920.
Application filed January 20, 1920. Serial No. 352,790.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. DU BUQUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dental Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dental appliances and more particularly to dental engines including a percussion member, and the invention has for its object to improve the construction of percussion engines, and the invention consists of the construction and combination and details, an embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and described and claimed herein.
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the improved engine, and
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1
r Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 4 is a sectional View showing a modified form of the mounting; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
The improved tool comprises a tool holding member of suitable construction, and in this case consists of a reciprocating rod 2 which is slidably mounted in suitable bearing 4 and 5, in this case extending from one side and in the plane of a ring like casing 6. The outer bearing of the tool carrier or holder 2 is shown as threaded at 7 to receive a suitable detachable mallet or other reciprocating operative part or tool 8 and the carrier 2 is prevented from rotation as the tool 8 is applied or removed in this case by forming a portion of the carrier 2 with a flattened side or sides forming the outer bearing 4 complementary thereto as indicated at 9. The bearing 4 may have applied to it a detachable guard or jacket 10 in this case in the form of a tube through which the shank of the tool 8 is extended and beyond which the operative end of the tool projects.
The reciprocating carrier 2 is operative preferably by pneumatic means comprising in this case a fan wheel 11 that is rotatively mounted on a shaft 12 in this case supported in central hubs 13 of spiders having radial arms 14, the outer ends of which rest in suitable seats 15 provided therefor on the inner surface of the ring like casing 6 the opposite sides of which are open and may be closed by disk like covers 16 having there is a recoil spring thread flanges 17 engaging complementary threads formed therefor on the sides of the casing 6.
Fluid under pressure for the operation of the engine is supplied from suitable source as by means of a hose adapted to be connected to the nipple 18 extending from the I rear peripheral portion of the casing 6 and in which there is mounted a control valve 19 having a lever arm 20 connected to a manual controlling device 21 so extended along the casing as to be within convenient reach of one of the fingers of the hand of the operator. The valve link or lever is slidably mounted in a bearing 22 against one side of which re-acts a spring 23 the opposite end of which engages a collar 24 fixed on the link 21.
When air on the pressure is admitted by the valve 19 it impinges on the fan 11 and rotates the latter, the air escaping from an outlet 25.
During the rotation of the fan a part 11 on one of its blades acts as a hammer striking on the adjacent end to 2 of the reciprocating tool carrier 2 and the latter is thrown forward, throwing the tool 8 on its working stroke.
I prefer to provide for the automatic recovery or recoil of the slide or carrier 2 with the tool so as to prevent the full driving force of the hammer l1 from being delivered through the tool 8 and therefore I arranged on the intermediate threaded part 2 a nut 2 between which and the bearing 4 26 and on the opposite side of the nut 2 there is another spring 27 bearing against the adjacent end of the bearing 5. These springs operate to bring a sliding organization to a central intermediate position but hold the inner end 2 of the carrier 2 in the path of the hammer 11 The hammer 11 is preferably mounted on a radial arm 11 that is resilient so that a portion of the force of its impact is absorbed in the bending of its spring arm. It will be seen that when the tool carrier 2 is projected to drive the tool 8 on its working stroke that a portion of the force is absorbed by the recoil spring 26 but the force of the blow may also be regulated by the degree of opening of the valve 19.
There is shown in Figs. 4 and 5 a slightly modified form of mounting for the reciprocating rod 2 and its extension 2*. In this form of the device the casing part 5 is extended in the form of a nipple that is threaded at 5 and on this there is'mounted a coupling 30 into section 10 is screwed. The coupling 30 has a non-circular aperture to receive the complementary portion 9 01": the rod 2 which latter is provided on the threads 2. and the nut V 2 which is exposed in an aperture 5 in the upper portion of the nipple 5 so that the nut may be readily engaged and turned when it isexposcd by rotating a jacket 31 mounted on the nipple 5 This jacket is shown in Fig. 5 as having a peripheral slot 31 to be i moved around into register with the opening 5 of the nipple. 7
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, as claimed. 7 I I claim: V 1. A dental engine having, in combination, a reciprocating tool holder; means for an intermediate maintaining the holder in posltion for yielding action 111 opposite d1- rectionsg and means for reciprocating the holder, said means including a pneumatic,
rotary motor.
which the tubular end 3. In a dental engine, the combinationof V a reciprocating tool holder, means for yieldably maintaining the holder in intermediate position, and fluid pressure actuated rotary means for movingsaid holder in one direction.
4%. In a dental engine, the combination of a reciprocating tool holder, means foryieldv ingly maintaining the holder in intermediate position, and means for actuating said holder in one direction, said means comprising a fluid pressureactuated motor having an extended vane adapted to successively strike one end of said tool-holder.
Intestimonywhereof I have signedmyname to this specification. v g o 4 GEO. F.-DU BUQUE. V
