Mechanism for Eifec'ting Rotary-Motion of Oii Well Drills.

GUsrAvUs A. HINoxLEY, on PIT HOLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
t IMPROVEMENT IN MECHANISM FOR FFECTING ROTARY MTION 0F OIL-WELL DRILLS.
Specification forming part-of Letters Patent No. 134,889, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsrAvUs A. HINGK- LEY, of Pit Hole, of the county of Venango, of the State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Mechanism for Effecting Rotary Motion of an Oil-Well Drill, while such may be in operation; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Fignre 1 is a top view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of a walking-beam and Samson-post with my improved mechanism applied thereto.
Such other figures as may be necessary to a proper delineation and description of my invention will be hereinafter referred to.
In a recent application for a patent made by me for a drill roter or rotator I have described as part of one of the elements of combination a peculiar mechanism for operatin g the pawls or throwing them alternately into and out of action with the crown-wheel.
My present invention is a new and simpler mechanism for such purpose.
In the drawing the walking-beam is shown at A, and its supporting or samson post at B. On the top of the said beam A is the bed-plate G, iixed firmly in place, as shown. The drillshaft b extends through the walkingbeam and carries a pinion, c, the rope for suspending the drill being attached to the lower end of the said shaft b. The crown-wheel D, which engages with the pinion a., is shown as arranged on or directly over the bed-plate, and as having on its pivot a lever, c, which has such pivot for its fulcrum, and extends diametrically across the crown-wheel. The two leverpawls d d for actuating the crown-wheel are pivoted to the said lever, as shown at e e, and are provided with springs ff to force them toward the said wheel. A long rod, g, hinged to one arm of the lever c, slides freely through a supporting-post, h, and has an arm, t', projecting from it into'a slot in a lever, k, pivoted to one side of the walking-beam, and arranged as shown. The lower arm of the lever lc is connected with the Samson-post by a rod, l, pivoted to an adjustable slide, m, fixed to the post and formed as represented.
From the above it will be seen that when the walking-beam is moved up and down a reciprocating movement of the pawl-carrying lever c will be produced by means of the sliderod g, lever lc, and rod l.
To the lever c there is applied a mechanism for alternately throwing the pawls into and out of engagement with the crown-wheel, and this mechanism I shall now describe.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the bedplate, the crown-wheel, and the mechanism over the latter.
On the lever c is a slide, E, carrying two projections, m m, extended from it and arranged with the pawls d d', as shown. This slide E is connected to the lever by screws n n going through slots o o in the slide. In rear of the crown-wheel is the ratchet-wheelK with its stud a', the latter during each entire revolution of the ratchet-wheel being moved rst against one and next against the other of two projections or cams b c extended, as shown, from two levers, q u, arranged over the crown and ratchet wheels and pivoted together and to the bed-plate, the lever q being also pivoted to the slider E, or provided with a stud to enter an elliptical or elongated slot made in such slider at its middle. The retaining-pawl of the ratchet-wheel is shown at z. A lever, L, having the pivot of the ratchet-wheel for its fulcrum, carries a pawl, for actuating the ratchet-wheel, such lever L being connected to the lever c by a rod, s, pivoted to the two and arranged as shown. A spring-latch, M, fixed to the bed-plate extends over and upon the lever u, a section of such lever and latch being shown in Fig. 4.
The lever L will have, by means of the connecting-rod s, a reciprocating motion corresponding to that of the lever c, whereby the pawl carried by the lever L will be caused to produce an intermittent rotary motion of the ratchet-wheel, and thereby cause the levers g u to be moved rst in one direction and next in the opposite. Such will produce alterna-te movements of the slide E, whereby each pawl of the rocker-lever under it will, in succession, be thrown out of action upon the crown-wheel, the other pawl at the same time being by its spring forced up to the Wheel, so as to cause the said wheel to be revolved `by the movement of the lever. The crown-wheel, after being revolved for a time in one direction, will ranged and combined together and with the crown and ratchet wheels D K and their actuating-pawls d d no, and also with the levers q u, all substantially as described and represented, the said lever c being connected with the lever k by the rod g and its arm i, arranged as shown.
