Be itvknown that I, JOSEPH N.l KLEMA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Mower and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in lanterns and has relation more particularly to devices of a hand type, and it is an obj ect of the invention to provide a device of this general character embodying novel and improved `means whereby the color screen may be adjusted relative to the burner as the occasions ofv practice may require, together with novel and improved means whereby the color screen maybe maintained in a raised or working position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts -of my improved lantern whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will be hereinafter definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be' the better` understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: I

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a casing of a conventional type generally employed in connection with a hand lantern of a railroad type and which is mounted at substantially the center of the cocavo-convex base l having its concave face downwardly directed.
Supported by the base l and arranged substantially central of the casing C is a burner B of a conventional type. Coacting with the casing C isa well known type of globeI).
rIlhe base l inwardly of the casing C is provided with a pair of substantially radially alined openingsQ, each substantially defined by a sleeve 3 preferably angular in cross section and which sleeve is of a length to terminate inwardly of the peripheral portion of the'base l. Each of the sleeves 3 is provided in a face thereof and adjacent the rlower end thereof with an opening l for a purpose which will hereinafter be more particularly referred to. 'Y
In the present embodiment of my inventionftwo transparent screens -S of diderent colors are adapted for coaction with the burner B so that when either of said screens is in anI elevated position the rays of light emitted from the lantern will be in accordance with the color of the screen.l Each of the screens is supported by a holder II and said holder H comprises a short arm 5 which, when the holder H is in lowered position extends through a sleeve 3 and said arm 5 is of a length to terminate immediately adjacent the lower end of the sleeve 3 when said holderl is in its lowered position. The upper end portion of the arm 5 is provided with a pair of oppositely directed arcuate arms 6. Each of the arms 6 is relatively short and is provided at its outer eX- tremity with an upwardlyY facing hook member 7 in which is adapted to seat the lower portion of a color screen S. The color screen S is tubular in form and substantially concentric to the burner B and surrounds said burner B when in its lowered position.

VThe lower' end portion ofthe arm 5 is -provided with a tenon or lip 9 extending within a kerf 10 in an 'end portion of an elongated operating lever or arm 11 and pivotally heldl as at a within said lrerf. A side of the armV 11 has secured thereto a spring l12 having one end portion closing a side' of the kerf 10 and coacting with the tenon or lip 9 so that when the arms 5 and 11 are in longitudinal alinement, the same are held against relative movement so that when the holder H and the screen S engaged therewith are in raised'position the screen is held against lateral movement which would otherwiseimpair the efliciency thereof. v f
When the holder H is-in its lowered position the arm 11 has swinging jmovement toward the base 1 in a directionaway from the spring 12.v The arm 11, whenits coacting' holder H is inits lowered position, is adaptedto be substantially housed within the base 1 and in order to maintain the same in such position the outer or free end kportion thereof is engagedbetween the Yspring clips 14 depending from' the base 1.

Whenit is desired to lower the holder H it is Yonly necessary'to depress the-outery end portion of the arm17 sufficiently toretra'ct-the inner end portion of said arm or more particularly .the Yextension 19 thereof from within the S thought'to be obvious that a lantern constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use' by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operatedl and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of Ysome change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason do not ywish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation ofthe several partsherein Ashown'in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed. A lantern comprising a base provided with an' opening, asleeve depending from the base and substantially deiningtheopening, a burnerv supported by the base, a transparent memberfsurrounding the burner, an arm depending Vfromthe member and eX- tending within the sleevewhen the member is in its lowermost position, said sleeve being provided -with an opening in a wall thereof, lan'- loperating lever pivotally engagedv with the 'lower end Jportion of the arm, an arm carried by the lever, means for constantly urging the inner end portion of the arm toward lthe lever, said inner end portion being provided-with an inwardly curved extension, said inwardly curved extension engaging within thelopening in the i walll of the'sleeve Vwhen the lever is moved upwardly through the sleeve to raise the transparent member.
