To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY KnssEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coldwater, in the county of Mercer and State ofv Ohio, have invented a new and useful Metal- Bending Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to metal working machines, and more particularly to machines especially adapted for use in bending metal rods or bars.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character having removable dies to adapt the machine for;
use in bending rods or bars into various designs.
A further ob ect of the invention is to provide a metal bending machine having means to automatically feed the material under operation, to an intermittently operated die. n e
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as thedescription proceeds, the invention resides in the com-. bination and arrangement ofparts and in the details of construction hereinafter de-- scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention;
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of a metal working machine constructed in accordance with the present invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the machine embodies a supporting frame comprising the side sections 5 secured in suitable spaced relation with each other by means of the bars 6, which are disposed between the side sections, adjacent the respective ends thereof.
The central portions of the sections 5have connection with the die supporting table 7 whereby the central portions of the sections 5 are maintained in proper operative relation with each other.
Each of these side sections 5 is provided with a pair ofupwardly extending arms 8 and 9. the arms of each section being disposed in suitable spaced relation with each other to provide guide-ways 10, to accommodate the ends of the shaft 11, which are shown as extending beyond the side walls of the arms 8 and 9, where the same have connection with the connecting link 12.
The shaft 11 is of a length to extend within guide-ways formed between the arms 8 and 9 of the respective pairs, the central portion of the shaft 11 adapted'to support the ram 13, which cooperates with the die employed in the bending operation.
As shown, the die supporting table 7 is provided with a cut out portion 14; formed in the upper surface thereof, which cut out portion is adapted to receive a removable die having one surface thereof formed in a predetermined'manner, andfrom the foregoing it is obvious that asthe ram 13 moves downwardly into engagement with the die supported by the table 7, the rod or material supported by {the table 7 will be bent in a predetermined manner.
Supported by each of the sidesections 5, is an operating gear 18, each of which is relatively large and has pivotal connection with. one end of the connecting link 12, as at 19, so that rotary movement of the oper ating gears 18 produce a relative movement of the ram 13.
Disposed between the side sections 5 is a power shaft 20 provided with the pulleys 21, keyed or otherwise secured thereto, the
ends of said shaft extend through the side sections 5 and support the relatively small gears 22, which are in mesh with the relatively large gears 18 to transmit motion from the power shaft 20 to the relatively large gear 18, whereby reciprocating motion is imparted to the ram 13.
These side sections 5. are relatively long and are provided with bearings 23 adjacent one end thereof, which bearings support the shaft 24, which in turn supports the sprocket wheels 25 at the respective ends thereof, the sprocket wheels 25 forming supports for the endless carriage .26 which moves the rods or bars under operation, to the die.
Supported in suitable bearings formed at the opposite ends of the side sections 5, is a shaft 27, which supports the relatively large sprocket wheel 28 at its respective ends and these sprocket wheels are connected to the sprocket wheels 25 operating at the opposite end of the supporting frame, by means of the endless carriage 26.
The endless carriage comprises a pair of V endless chain sections operating in parallel relation With each other, which chain sections carry the lugs 29 arranged in spaced relation with each other, -'the lugs of one chain however being disposed directly opposite the lugs of the opposed chain so that a I bar to be operated on may be positioned on the carriage behind the lugs, which lugs carry the material to the die.
From the foregoing it is obvious that the operation ofthe machineshouldbe intermi tent, and to this end I have provided an automatic means for feeding the carriage at predetermined intervals, to permit the ram 7 to complete a bending operation and to cause another rod to be fed to the die, upon the upward movement of the ram.
I The mechanism for accomplishing the foregoing result includes a ratchet wheel 30 which is keyed or otherwise secured to one end of the shaft 27, the teeth of said ratchet wheel 30 cooperating with the pivoted pawl 1 31 which is supported by the pivoted arm 32, that has one of its ends apertured to pivot on one endof the shaft 27.
One end of the arm 32 is shown as extending'to a position within the radius of the gearwheel 18, where thesame lies within the path of travel of the roller 33 which contacts with one end of the arm, upon rotary movement of the gear 18, to cause the pawl 31 to rotate the ratchet wheel 30 a predetermined distance to bring a rod into position on the-bending die, or into a position where the same will be engaged by the recipro eating bending ram 13.
An integral rib 34 is provided on the gear 18, and extends from a point adjacent the periphery ofthegear, to a point in close proximity to the axis of the gear 18 and this rib is provided with an elongated slot 35 adapted to receive the bolt 36 oftheroller support 37, which is shown as including a forked arm embracing the rib 34, and having a right angled shaft 38 forming a bear? ing for the roller 33. i
It is therefore obvious that if it is desired to regulate the stroke of the machine to insure proper delivery of the material under operation to the bending die, the roller support may be adjusted along the rib 34, by-
loosening the nut 39, and sliding thesupport 36 to a predetermined position on the rib, whereupon thenut 39 is again operated to cause the forked portion of the support to grip the side walls of the rib 34. I
In view of the foregoing, it is believed that a detail description of the operation-of the device, step by step, is unnecessary, it might however be stated that in the operation of the device, an attendant feeds the machine by placing the material to be operated on, one end of the endless carrier, whereupon thelrods are automatically brought to a position under the reciprocating ram 13.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is l 1. In a metal bending machine, a frame including slde sections, a statlonary die supporting table supported by the frame, a reciprocating ram cooperating with the die supporting table, an endless carriage supported by the frame,- sprocket wheels for supporting the endless'carriage, a gear wheel carried by eachsideseetiomeach gear wheel having an integral ribprovided with an elongated slot,a roller support including a bolt passing through the slot, said bolt adapted to permit adjustment of the roller longitudinally of the rib, and means within the path of travel of the roller, and having connection with the sprocket wheels at one end of the frame for causing an intermittent movement of the endless carriage.
