uni-TED STATES PATENT OFFICE. v
WILLIAM 1r FULTON, or mvmeron, new JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 'ro 'rrrEFLEx METAL HOSE oonronarron, A ooaronarron or NEW YORK.
TU BE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
P atented Aug. 3, 1920.
' shall be of simple construction and require small expense to manufacture, but which shall be strong, reliable and sufiiciently tight for many purposes, for instance mufller tubes.
Other and ancillary objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, whichillustrate the invention,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the initial flat ribbon or strip from which the tube is formed;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the strip;
after having been formed to have a cross section so that 1t is suitable for winding into the tube, and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the tube, par- I l tion of zigzag section adjacent the othertially in section;
' Fig. 4 is' a fragment showing in section a seam or joint having packing.
Referring to the drawings, a strip 1, of .brass,,steel or other material of'flat, ribbonlike form as shown in .Fig. 1,.may have its section shaped in any suitablemanner into the form as shown in Fig. 2 wherein the strip has a longitudinal center groove 2.
pon one side of the groove 2, is a groove 3 extending longitudinally of the 'strip, while upon the other side of the groove 2, is a 1011-- gitudinally extending ortion comprising the parts at and 5 formed 1nto zigzag relation.
The strip of Fig. 2 may be coiled into a helix as by windin on amandrel to form a tube as shown in eiitered within the groove 3 at the adjacent edge of a contiguous convolution, so as to seig. 3. The zigzag portion adjacent the edge of one convolution is which is tight for many purposes, is secured. It may further be observed that in the structure shown, the different element of 4:. and 5 of the zigzag portion, extend from one side of the groove 3 to the other, so that the convolution edges are held from relative movement longitudinally of the tube.
- If desired, a packing strip indicated in section at 6 in Fig. 4, may be wound within the groove 3 between its bottom and the edge of the zigzag shaped portion. This will enhance the tightness of the tube Where it is retrvired.
hile one manner of forming the tube has been stated, it might be formed by other methods.
- While the invention has been illustrated in What is considered its best application, it
may have other embodiments without departing from'its spirit and is not therefore limited to the structure shown in the drawstrip havinga longitu 'nal groove adjacent.
one edge and a longitudinally extending portively reflexed portions overlying each other radiallyof the tube.
2. A tube comprising a helically disposed I strip having a central longitudinal groove;
' a longitudinal, groove upon one side of the aforesaid groove and a longitudinally extending, portion of zigzag section upon the 7 other side of the central longitudinal groove,
the said portion of zigzag sectionbeing within the groove upon the other side of the said central groove and having its relatively reflexed portions overlying each other radially of the tube.
3. A tube comprising a helically disposed strip having a longitudinal groove adjacent one edge and a longitudinally extending portion of zigzag section adjacent the other edge,the said portion of zigzag section being within said groove and havin its outer edge pressing against the inner we 1 of the groove by the spring of the metal in the zigzag portion. Y
4. A tube comprisin a helically disposed strip having a longitu inal-groove adjacent said portion and the walls 0 one ed e and a longitudinally extending portion -0 zigzag section adjacent the other edge, the said portion of zi zag section being within the said groove an having its relatively reflexed portions overlying each other radially of the tube; and a packing between said groove. 5. A tube oomprisin .a helically disposed strip having a longitu inal groove adjacent one edge and a longitudinally extending por- 1o tion of zigzag section adjacent the other H edge, the said portion of zigza section being within said groove and the e ements of the said zigzag eachextending from one wall of said groove to another. 15 In testimony whereof I have signed this specification this 14th day of May, 1917.
