UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1920.
VApplication filed October 8, 1919. Serial No. 329.263.
To all whom t may Concern BeVV it known that LEON MARTOCCI- Piso/imm, a citizen of the United States, land a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and Improved Medicated Pessaries, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
It is well appreciated that pessaries of the usual construction have caused complications and diseases' to' the generative organs, such as vag'iiiitis and fluid discharges.
Particularly where a personA has contracted venerealV diseases, it is well understood by the medical profession that it would be lextremely desirable to have some medium` or process by means of which it wouldV be possible to permit vaporous germicidal agents, such Aas formaldehyde, to act upon the parts affected. This has been heretofore impossible, for the reason that itis out of the question toV apply to the delicate membranes and tissues any solution which will be of suflicient strength tohave a detrimental effect upon any affected tissues,V
which would not cause extreme irritation to the membranesto which it was applied. Further, any antisepticsolution applied di-` rectly to the tissues would, as might well be appreciated, wear off quickly, necessitating another application. This is to be particu-1 larly avoided, in view of the fact that'lan ideal condition would be Onein which the action oflan agent such as formaldehyde might be 'exerteclupon the affected tissue and which would 'also' have certain provisions which would permit this action to continue uninterruptedly for a lengthy period.
With these objects in view, I have constructed a medicated pessarywhich is particularly adaptable for the prevention and cureof venereal diseases and whichinay be used as a'general'disinfectantA and .deodorizer for the vaginaand uterus, chiefly in ad# vance in inoperable lcarcinoma and vother malignant` tumors'which affect the vagina anduterus.
A Vfurther object'of my invention is the.
construction of an intrauterine stem pessary for'antefieiiion of the cervix or stenosis inV theV external or internal os. l
A still" further object of the invention is theconstruction of a pessary which will be free from complications and diseases produced 'by those usually used, especially those constructed'of rubber, which produce infections peculiar to the generative organs when left in position for any length of time.
Another 'object of the invention is the construction of a plessai'y which shall be entirely self-contained, which may be made of any suitable material, and which will have incorporated in it means permitting an evaporable gerinicidal agent to be associated with it. Y Other objects of my invention will appear upon reference to the subsequent specification. v ,Y
Reference is had to the attached sheet of drawings which illustrate practical embodiments of my invention and in which Figure l is a cross section through the female generative 4organs with my pessary iii applied position.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side view throughV one l ofvmy "forms of pessary.
F ig. 3 is a sectional side viewof a second forni of pessary.
Fig. i isa sectional side view of a pessary constructed similarly in all respects to the pessary.illustrated in Fig. 2 with the exception that adiferent form of stem is applied thereto.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view lines 5,-5 of Fig. 4L.
Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 show pessaries constructed` in either `the manner" illustrated in Figs. 2 or 3 with optional forms of stems associated therewith.
In all of these, views like reference numerals designate similar parts, and the reference numeral, l indicates a female trunk; the reference numeral 2, theurethra leading` to the bladder ,3, the vagina and 4c, the uterus, the lattoil members having applied to them my improvedV formA of. .pessary -eferring nfow more particularly to the construction illustrated in Fig. 2, it will be seen that my pessary may includeV a stem 5 provided with a central bore G extending taken along the ythrough its entireflength, froml which may extend'pas's'ages 7 at rightangles terminating at the outer face ofthe stem.
` The pessary further includes a cup 8 provided with a cover`9, which cover may be .formedwitli an annular, downwardly-exstem 5 which is formed with passages 12 affording communication between the bore of the stem 5 and the interior of the cup 8.
It will readily be appreciated that theL cup may be filled with any suitable germicidal agent, such as Gelofornn and thedcover 9 applied thereto. Upon the lowerend 11 of the stem 5 being nowk inserted through thescrew-threaded openings and turned down so that the screw threads on the outer face.
of the saine cause both the cup 8 and cover 9 to'be drawn tightly against the shoulder 13 formed on the stem adjacent the upper ends of the screw threads, any possible escape of `the contents Vof the cup 8 will be prevented,
as well as preventing the displacement of the cup, although permitting the gases given Voff by-r the germicidal agent to pass :through Y the bore 6 and'against the affected parts.
Optionally, the cup may bev constructed, asis illustrated in'Fig. 3, with a cover and cup portion which are adapted to behclipped together as at 121, the cup being retained in Y and it might, consequently, be necessary," Y and. inusual cases quite desirable, to utilize stemsof the construction illustratedin Figs. 4,5,6,7,8and9. ,fr 'V v In'these figures it will benoted that Figs. al and 5 illustrate' a pessary which is provided with a lcover constructed in the identical manner as the form illustrated in F ig; V2,
the same being retained' in applied position. Y l, by means of a tube 17 provided with the usual screw threads, passages 12, andV shoulder 13.
f However, the upper end of thetube termii' ends Iof spring'arms `19, which fare *retainedv the device as'a.whole.
- toretain thearms'vintheir retracted,,posinates in a' reduced portion aroundwhich are arranged and rigidly secured, in appliedpo-V sition, by ymeans* of wound wire 18,Y thek lower in. applied position by any suitablemeans, suchfasl gelatin capsules 20, rwhich will, after.
the pessary vhas been-inserted, dissolve andAV permit the 19 to snap outwardly to the' .Y position indicated in dotted lines, whereby Ato prevent., any accidentaldisplacement of manufacture, is illustrated in .Figs and 7 in which 8 is` the cup provided with a cover.
9, the cover having-applied vto Vit a pair of spring arms 21 provided with integral, in-
pessary has'beenproperly positionedso as tion, -whereupon the rod or Vinstrinn'ent 23.
may be, withdrawn, permitting a separation of vthe arms and eliminating any danger of the pessary being accidentally displaced.
l uFinally,;in Figs. 8 and 9 there is illustrated a form of pessary which is provided with the .usual cup cover 9, from which there extends a tubular screw-threaded portion 241, terminating in spring arms 25, which may be conveniently provided with screw threads, as has been illustrated in Fig. 8, orY
a1 depression, as' has been shown in Fig. V9. twill be seen that in these two latter ligures the spring arms are held together by means vaporized germicidal agent will pass throughl the jpassages 1.2 into the bore -6 of the stem 5fand into contact withithe'parts affected, producing the desired action. Further, it will lbe) appreciated that 'any suitable germicidalfagent incorporated in .suitable media or applied on absorbent cotton maybe optionally used. q
. 1t will .further be noticedthat the purpose of the bore 6Y and the passages 7 is not alone to permit the vapor to be introduced into the parts which are to be reached, but also to permit a free passage ofthe fluid into the or sponge vagina froml the uterus. during the. menstrual period, it'V being noted that the nfluid will readily pass fromv the passages 7 into the bore Gand out from the lower end of thestem 5. l
Obviously, numerous modifications might be resorted to without departing from the scope of my claims.
Iclaiin:y Y -V y1. A pessary, including a stem formed with a ,central bore extending throughout `rits entire length, and a container v formed; with an opening,'said stem being adapted to .project through the container opening, said stem. being provided with lineans permitting of a' communieationk between'the container y, v, Y andtheibore of saids'tein. Y' Another convenient form of` stem, which v combines generalV utility with cheapness of LA pessary, includingafstem formed with a centralhbore extending throughout its entire length, vand a-VcontainerA vformed with an opening, said stem beingadapted Yto project throughA the containerY opening,
said,l stem being formed.. with openings through that v.portion of its face enveloped by said container-. n
3. A pessary, includi ngfa. stem, la container attached to'vsaidmstem being formed with abore and openings adapted to provide a passage between said container and the atmosphere, said Stem being so oonstructed as to permit a flow of fluid through the same and past the container.
A pessary, including a Stem formed with a bore, a container associated with such stem, such container including a cover and a cup each provided with a central opening, such stem being adapted to project through such openings and being 'ormed with passages aording Communication between the interior of saidcup and the bore of the stem.
5. A pessary, including a container comprising a cup, a cover mounted upon such l5 cup and closing the same7 both the cup and cover being provided with centrally located screw-threaded openings7 a Stem formed with a bore, the lower end of such stem being screw-threaded and being adapted to project through the Screw-threaded openings in the cup and cover, whereby to retain the latter in applied position, and means affording communication between the interior of such cup and the bore of the stem.
