JAMES R. MeKINLAY, OF'SEATTLE, WAsruinaorr.'l Y
BOLT.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES R. McKrNLAY, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bolt of the headless type which is intended to be employed in connecting articles the location of which renders access to the head of the bolt when in applied position, a diilicult matter.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a bolt of this character which when passed through the bolt openings in the articles to be connected thereby may be retained in applied position byV means of a.
locking key so mounted within the bolt as to obviate the necessity of removing the nut from the bolt when the bolt is to be passed through or withdrawn from said opening.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the locking key and lslot in the bolt in which the locking key is mounted that when the key is in locking position it will be firmly held within the slot with a portion of the key projecting beyond an end of the slot, although when it is desired to remove the bolt the key may be manually forced to a position in which it will lie wholly within said slot and oler no opposition to the withdrawal of the bolt.
.lV ith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and particularly point- V ed out in the claim.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a view in side elevation of a bolt constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the same in applied position.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l with the Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February 23. 191g.
' Patented "Aug: 3,1920.4 serial Nb. 218.758."
Referring now to the drawing in detail the letter A designates a' pair ot' plates which are connected by a bolt B constructed in accordance with the invention.
The bolt B includes a cylindrical shank l() which is passed through the bolt opening in the plates A and is threaded for a portion of its length, as at ll adjacent one end of the bolt. The shank l0 has formed therein adjacent its other end a transversely extending slot l2 of rectangular shape in cross section. Both the side and end walls ot' the slot converge throughout their length from one end toward the opposite end of the slot for a purpose which will presently appear.
Engaged with the threaded portion 1l of the shank 10 is a nut 13 which is adapted to be held in contact with one of the plates A by a locking key 14 which projects beyond one end of the slot l2 and engages the other plate A. The key la corresponds in shape to the shape of the slot l2 and is teo-extensive in length therewith, so that when the key has been manually moved to the position shown in Fig. l in the drawing, the key will be lirnily gripped by the inclined wallsI of the slot and held in locking position although, the key may be readily driven to a position in which the key lieswholly within the slot l2 and offers no opposition to the withdrawal of the shank from the openings in the plates A.
l/Vhen it is desired to connect a pair of plates with my improved bolt the shank of the bolt is held in the hand with the key 14 in a horizontal position and lying wholly within the slot l2. The unthreaded portion of the shank 12 is now passed through the belt openings in the plates A and the shank given a quarter turn, so that the key 14: will under the influence of its own weight assume the position shown in Fig. l in the drawing. It desired the key may be 'forced more firmly against the inclined walls oi' the slot l2 with a suitable implement and thereby firmly securing the key in extended position.
lVhen the boit is to be removed from the openings of the bolts A the key is manually forced within the slot 12 so that it will offer no opposition to the withdrawal of the shank l0.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with die accompanying drawing it is apparent that an inexpensive bolt of the headless type has been provided which 'lli i v* may beadvantageously used to connect articles Where access to the head of an ,ordi- 'rrnary bolt would hev a difficult matter.`
j-Having thns described my invention what 5' is claimed asneW is;
The Combination with a headless bolt Y 'threadedzat one end,0f amember. having inclined planeside faces to providea-transversely tapered key adapted to be remorably positioned in a slot extending longitu-- dinally of the bolt, said bolt having inclined side Walls to provide a transversely Y tapered opening.
VIn testimony. whereof I affix my signa-
