SHIPPING-PACKAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 3, 1920,
Application filed January 2'7, 1920. Serial No. 356,033.
the customer after removing the contents thereof, returning the empty cases to the seller to be usedfor a subsequent shipment.
The main object of the invention i'sto provide said casing with permanent addresses of the 'consignor and consignee of such a character that they cannot be lost or tampered with in transit and which may be quickly reversed when said cases reach their destination in either direction thereby placing the cases in condition'for immediate shipment to their next destination.
"The invention consists primarily of a shipping case having a hinged address plate so mounted thereon that it maybe reversed as desired and locked in adjusted position.
The invention further consists in an address plate having addresseson both sides and provided midway of its length with alined trunnions mounted in bearings, said plate being freely movable about the axes of saidtrunni'o'ns when the cover of the case is open and the locking plate moved outwardly.
The invention'further consists of a slidable locking plate coacting with said address plate and preventing movement of said address plate about theaxes of said trunnions when'the slidable plate has been positioned preparatoryto the shipment of said case. The inventionfurther consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be understood readily by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given. V
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof is illus- 'trated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results although it is to be understood that the various'instrumentalities of'which the invention consists can'be variously'arranged and organized and the invention is not limited to the precise. arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described, except as required by the scope of the appended claims.
Of the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a shipping case embodying the principles of the present invention.
Fig. 2 represents a plan of a'portion of the same showing one of the address plates.
Fig. 3 represents a similar view with the sliding lock-plate partially withdrawn.
Fig. d represents a similar View with the address plate reversed.
Fig. 5 represents a vertical section on line 5, 5, on Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 represents a vertical section on line 6, 6, on Fig. 2, and t Fig. 7 represents a similar view to Fig. 5 with the sliding lock-plate withdrawn sufficiently to permit the reversal of the address plate.
Similar characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawmgs.
r In the drawings, 10 is a front wall of a shipping case, the upper edge of which extends above, the end wallsll thereof The upper edge of the rear wall 12 also extends above the end .VitllS 11 and this rear wall 12 is provided with hinges 13 for the cover 14.
It is obvious from an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawings that when the cover 1 1 is closed,'its front edge will abut the inner face of the front wall 10. i
The cover is provided with a hinged hasp 15 'coactingwith a staple 16 adapted to receive a padlock.
The cover 1i has set into its upper face, two rectangular frames 17 which are preferably secured thereto by means of screws 18. Preferably these screws 18 are inserted from the inner face of the cover and threaded to the rectangular frames 17 so that when the cover is down and locked these frames 17 cannot be tampered with.
Beneath the opening in each rectangular frlafme 17 is an opening 19 in the cover itse Each frame 17 is provided with opposed guide grooves 20 in which is slidably mounted the projections 21 extending laterally from a locking plate 22.
Pins 23 extend across the outer ends of the grooves and coact with the projections 21 to limit the sliding movement of the locking. plate 22 in either direction. v
When the locking plate 22 is inits rear; most position, the front projections 21 will bear against the pins23 and thefront edge of the plate 22 will coincide with the front- I i film distributers. This sliding plate 22 has at its outer end,'
edge of the cover 14:.
a downwardly extending ear 24 by means of which the operator may movethe plate 22 outwardly'into the position indicated in Fig. 7 of the drawings when the cover 14:
has been opened. I
When the cover it closed the plate 22 will be in the position indicated in Fig. 5
'of the drawings with the downwardly projecting ear 24 abutting the inner face of the front wall 10 of the case.
Immediately above the sliding plat 221's an address plate 25 fitting the opening through the frame 10 and provided with alined'trunnions 26 midway'of' the sides of said plate 25. V
The trunnions 26 extend into bearings in the frame 10 about the axes. of which the "address plate 25 may be moved in either direction when the sliding locking plate 22 is drawn out into the position indicated in Fig. 7 of the drawings.
On the cover, la'there are two rectangular frames 17, one in the upper left hand corner and the other in the lower right hand corner.
The address plates are preferably of metal and the one in the right handlower corner has stenciled onone face thereof, the name and address of the shipper as indicated at 27, while onthe opposite face is stenciled addressat the upper left hand corner inclihand corner is the address of the whom the goods are shipped.
cates from whom the contents of-the case are shlpped while the address in the lower right party to When the case with its contents reaches its destination the recipient removes the con tents from the box, pulls out the slides 22. reverses the plates 25, returns the slides 22 tov their normal positions, closes the'cover 14;, locks the'same and the empty case is readyfor return to the dealer. 7
andthe cover closed, it is absolutely impossiblev to tamper with theaddresses of either the cons gnee or consignor;-'
-When: the address, plate 25. is. in; itsinormal position its under face rests against the sliding locking plate 22 and is retained in this position with its outer: face flush with the outer face of the frame 17.
. This shipping case is particularly adapted for ,use in shipping motion picture films to the various motion picture theaters from'the As soon as a new film is received in the packing case at the theater where said film is to be displayed, it is removed from the case and a film previously displayed is inserted into the box, the addresses changed and the case with the old film immediately returned to the film distributers. H Itis believed that the operation and its many advantages will be thoroughly understood without further description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: 7 V 7 1. A shipping case provided with an opening in a wall thereof; an address plate pivotally mounted. therein and adapted to be reversed by movement about-the axes of the pivots} thereof; and means for locking said address plate in adjusted position.
