vention, such as will enable others skilled.
in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved rail bender which shall be of simple construction and convenient in operation.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts as will. be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the rail bender, and
Fig. 2 represents a'transverse sectional View therethrough.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the. several views, the numeral 5 indicates generally a substantially Ill-shaped frame including the web portion 6 and the parallel legs 7, having the recessed terminals .8 for receiving the head or base of the rail to be bent.
The web portion 6 is provided with a circular enlargement or lug 9, havingspiral faces 10 thereon providing a substantially annular series of ratchet teeth, which are engaged with a wedge collar 11, provided with spiralfaces 12 adapted to co-act with the spiral faces 10 of the enlargement 9.
' The collar 11 isformed with an axial projection 13 of polygonal "form, which is received in a correspondingly shaped opening 14, formed in the enlarged terminal 15 of a turning handle 16.
The web portion 6 of the frame and the wedge collar 11 are formed with registering openings 17, receiving a slidable draw rod 18, having one end hooked, as indicated at 19, and provided adjacent its opposite end with a series of uniformly spaced apertures 20 adapted to receive a pin 21 for limitlng the'movement of the draw rod, in one direction, with relation to the frame of the bender.
In operation the rail to be bent is seated in the recesses 8 in the terminals of the frame legs, 7 and subsequent to removing the pin 21 from the draw rod 18, the hooked terminals 19 thereof are engaged with the rall. The pin is subsequently inserted in the aperture 20 nearest the handle 15 and as the wedge collar 11 is turned by means of the handle 16 the inclined faces of the wedge collar working against those of the enlargement 9 effect a longitudinal movement of the draw rod 18,- thus drawing the latter inwardly toward the web 6 and bendring that portion of the rail disposed between the frame legs 7. The bending oper-' ation may be continued until the rail is bent into the desired shape, and it willbe understood that at each operation the pin 21 is advanced one aperture 20.
What I claim is: A rall benderincluding a substantially al-shaped frame having parallel legs and a relatively thick web, the ends of the legs having one of their side faces provided with alined cutout portions forming shoulders, an enlargement formed on the outer face .of the central portion of the web provided with spiral faces, a draw rod slidably mounted in the web portion and enlargement, a wedge collar rotatably engaged with the outer face of the enlargement and slidably mounted on the draw rod, a reduced polygonal extension carried by the wedge collar, a handle non-rotatably engaged-with the polygonal extension, said draw rod having the lower end. thereof bent to provide wedge collar and handle, whereby relative movement between the handle, draw rod and PEARL M.
