Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, race.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BUnNs D. Loonwoon and Gnonon A. SUoKrInLo, citizens of the Unitec States, residing at #366 Lincoln avenue, Bellevue, and #620 Orchard avenue, Avalon, res ect'vely, in the county of Allegheny and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway car couplings and has for its object to provide a simple and effective coupling device by means of which a railway car equipped with the Master Car Builders automatic vertical plane type of coupler may be connected with a car equipped with the usual European hook and screw coupling.
Another object of the invention is to provide a Master Car Builders automatic type of coupler with a removable screw coupling.
Another object of the invention is to provide the Master Car Builders type of coupler with a removable knuckle having one end of a screw coupling mounted therein. 1
A further object of the invention is to provide means for pivotally mounting a screw couplingon the Master Car Builders type of coupler in such a manner that it will permit relative vertical movement between such coupling and coupler.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention showing it in operative position; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 8-3 of Fig. 1. 1
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 1 indicates an end portion of a car equipped. with the Master Car Builders type of coupler casting 2, and 3 indicates an end portion of a car equipped with the European type of screw coupling a and coupling book 5. When two cars equipped with the Master Car Builders type of automatic couplers are to be coupled together, the usual coupler knuckles (not shown) are used, but when a car with this type of coupler is to be coupled with a car equipped with the European type of screw coupling and hook, a knuckle 6 is substituted for the usual knuckle of the Master Car Builders type of coupler. The inner end portion of this knuckle 6 is provided with an opening 7 through which a bolt 8 is adapted to be passed to removably secure the knuckle to the coupler casting 2. The outer end portion of this knuckle is provided with spaced portions 9 between which a block 10 is mounted. This block 10 is provided with trunnions 11, one of which is loosely mounted in an opening 12 formed in the knuckle 6, while the other trunnion is loosely mounted in an opening 13 formed in a member 1 1 which is secured to and preferably between the portions 9 of the knuckle by rivets, bolts or other suitable means and such block 10 is held against excessive trans verse movement by its engagement with the knuckle 6 and the member 14.
, 15 indicates an adjusting member, having its end portions 16 and 17 screw threaded, one end portion being provided with a right handed thread and the other being provided;
with a left han led thread. The end portion 16 of this adjusting member is operatively mounted in a screw threaded opening 18 formed in the block 10. On the opposite end of this member a screw threaded shackle block 19 is operatively mounted, such shackle block having trunnions 20 on which a shackle 21' is loosely mounted, such shackle being for engagement with the hook 5 of anadjacent car. Intermediate its ends this member 15 is provided with a lever 22, by the use of which the member may be rotated in one direction to take up the slack in the coupling when adjacent cars are being coupled, and rotated in the opposite direction to produce slack in the coupling when adjacent cars are to be uncoupled.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a coupler of a knuckle removably secured to said coupler, one end of said knuckle comprising spaced portions, a member extending between and secured to said portions, a block between said portions, trunnions on said block, one of said trunnions being loosely mounted in said knuckle and the other of said trunnions being loosely mounted in said member, and an adjusting member having one of its end portions mounted in said block.
2. lhe combination with a coupler of a knuckle removably secured to said coupler, one end of said knuckle comprising spaced portions, a member extending between and secured to said portions, a block between said portions, trunnions on said block, one of said trunnions being loosely mounted in said knuckle and the other of said trunnions belng loosely mounted in said member, an ZLClJLIStlHg member havlng one of its end portions mounted in said block, a shackle block mounted on the opposite end portion of said adjusting member, and a shackle loosely mounted on said block.
3. The combination with a coupler of a BURNS D. LOOKWOOD. GEORGE A. SUCKFIELD.
