TOY.
Application filed March 15,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1', Cn n ns H. HYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys of the Whirligig type, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive toy of this character to please children which can be easily and cheaply manufactured of sheet material by stamping and punching presses.
My invention is illustrated in two practical forms in the accompanying drawings, in WlllCh Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of the toy designed to be operated by both hands of the child, and
Fig. 2 is a simllar view of a slightly different form designed to be held and operated by a single hand.
Referring first to Fig. 1, the frame or holder of the toy is preferably made of sheet metal and comprises an upper portion 5 containing an opening 6, and a lower depending shank or handle portion 7 The metal of the upper portion 5 is pressed outwardly at diametrically opposite ends of the opening 6 to form bearings 8 and 9 for aspindle 10 that extends diametrically across the opening parallel with the plane of the latter. Fixedly mounted on the spindle 10 within the opening 6 is the whirler 11 which may be an object of any desired form or shape and is herein shown as the image of a child with arms distended. Preferably the image will be dressed in bright variegated colors to produce a pleasing and attractive effect.
Just shank 7 is cut and pressed outwardly to provide a pair of strips 12 which form bearings in which is mounted a slide bar 13 disposed transverse to the spindle 10. To the opposite ends of the slide bar 13 are connected the ends of a taut cord 14L which is wrapped once or more around the spindle 10. One end of the slide bar 13 is preferably provided with a handle 15.
In use, the toy is held by the handle 7 in one hand of the child and the handle 15 is grasped with the other hand to reciprocate the slide bar 13 back and forth. This sets up a rapid revolution or spinning movement below the opening 6 the metal of the Specification of Letters Patent. g m a- A m, 3,1

of the image 11, first in one direction and then in theother.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2 the same structural and operative principles are employed, but this device is designed to be both held and operated by one hand of the child. In this form I have shown the upper portion 5 of the holder as circular and provided with a circular opening 6 within which is mounted a disk 11 fast on the spindle 10, this latter being journaled in the frame of the toy in the same way as shown in Fig. 1. 13 is the slide bar, in this instance mounted at the upper end of the toy in guides 12 and provided with an actuating cord 141. To the shank 7 are pivoted at 16 a pair of scissors- like arms 17 and 18 terminating at their lower ends in ring handles 19 and 20 for engagement by the thumb and finger. The arm 18 is extended upwardly on one side, as shown at 18 to a point opposite the upper end of the toy, and at its upper end is a longitudinal slot 21 engaged by a pin 22 projecting laterally from one end of the slide bar 13. The scissors arms, above the pivot 16, are connected by links 23 and 2a to a pin 25 which is slidably mounted in the slot 26 formed in the shank 7; this construction, or some equivalent thereof, being essential to maintain the. scissors arms in operative relation to the body of the frame or holder and to insure the reciprocation of the slide bar 13. In the use of this form of the device the arms 1'? and 18 are alternately expanded and contracted by the thumb and finger of the child, resulting in the reciprocation of the slide bar 13 and the rapid rotation alternately in opposite directions of the whirling olo'ect 11.
claim:
1. A Whirligig toy, comprising a holder having an opening, a spindle journaled on said holder and extending diametrically across said openin a whirling object mounted on said spindle within said opening, and manually operable means for ro tating said spindle.
2. A whirligig toy, comprising a flat holder having an opening. a spindle rotatably mounted parallel with the plane of said holder and extending across said open ing, a whirling object mounted on said spindle within said opening, a slidebar mounted on said holder to reciprocate crosswise of said spindle, and means for rotating said spindle from said slide-bar during the reciprocations of the latter.
3. A Whirligig toy comprising a fiat holder having an opening, a spindle jonrnaled on said holder and extending diametrically across said opening, a whirling object mounted on said spindle within said opening, a slide-bar mounted on said holder to reciprocate crosswise of said spindle, and a cord wrapped around said spindle and at its ends attached to the ends of said slide ar. i
4. A Whirligig toy, comprising a flat sheet metal holder having an opening and formed with integral bearings at points diametrically opposite said opening, a spindle journaled in said bearings, a whirling object mounted on said spindle within said openlntegral guldes on said holder, a slide bar mounted to reciprocate in said'guides crosswise of said spindle, and a cord wrapped around said spindle and atiits ends attached to the ends of said slide-bar.
