Be it known that I, CHARLES Oakland, in the county of Alameda and tate of California,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing Apparatus, of which the following is a specifica-e The invention relates to a type of dispensing ap aratus for ejectinga measured uantity o material and the form 'herein illustrated is particularly adapted for use 1n connection with pastry baking machinessuch as is `illustrated in my -copending agplication Serial #100,408, 1ed May 2 1916, .for-depositing a given quantity o f batter `in the baking mol s.
The principal object o'f my mventlon 1s to rovide a device of this character which wil simultaneously perform the vabove mentioned functions, 1n a satisfactory manner for a plurality of molds or in other words a device which will simultaneously eject a plurality of portions of batter. The end plates 2 and 3v as well as the cross barsl and 5 are each provided with a slot all of which open from one side of the frame and terminate in semicircular bottoms, the centers of which are in axial alinement.- These slots are denoted by 6, 7, 8 and 9 respectively. c
Attached to the outer face of end plate 2 is a flanged member 10 having the tubular threaded sleeve 11 which extends inwardly through the slot 6. Slidably mounted in the openingl of this sleeve is a shaft 12, the outer end o f'which is screw threaded as at 13 and engiged thereon is an'adjusting nut 14 and loc nut 15. The opposite end of this shaft is shouldered as show nat 18 and provided .with the screw threaded portion 17 on which is engaged a recessed threaded member 19 that serves also as aseat for the spring 20. In threaded engagement with sleeve v11 is a nut. 21 that serves as an abutment ,for the other end of the spring and ly which the tension may be adjusted. The axial osition'of member 19 on the screw threa l s 17 may be changed by turning this member, the adjustment being held by means of the lock nut 22. ,l
A disk 23 is attached to the intermediatev cross bars llby means of' screws 24 extending through arcuate slots 25. This disk is previded with a polyhedrical opening 26 through which extends a'similarly shaped member 27 having on its outer face a spiral cam 28. This member is keyed to a shaft 3() inaxialalinement with shaft 12. The coperatingcam memberdenetcd by 31, is formed on the outer end of hub 32 of a toothed bevel ear 33. This hub is provided with an openlng through which shaft 3() extends and an annular groove which engages the bottom of slot 9 thus taking care of the thrust of f' the gear and of the cam. To hold this hub in its proper relative position in the slot I provide the U shaped piece 34 having its Curved portion arranged complementary and concentric to the semicircular bottom.of yrecess 9. The ends of this piece are bent at right angles and fastened to the `frame by moans of screws 34. This accurately centers `cylindrical barrel 42, having two series of openings denoted by '.51 and 52. In threadedv engagement with the outer -end'of this barrel is a plug 53, having the axially pro'ecting sleeve 54 in which the outer end of s aft 30 is slidably mounted.
Gear 33 has a recess as shown at 45 and seated in this recess is an inner'barrel 46 .that justY fits Within the outer barrel 42.
This inner barrel is attached to the gear 33 so as to rotate therewith and is rovided with spaced openings-43 and 48 a apted to coperate with openings 52 and 51 respectively. 'lhe penings 43 and 48 are single in number and are arranged on diametrically opposite sides of the barrel. The series of openings 51 occupy approximately threequarters the distance aroundthe barrel while the openings 52 occupy only a short arc across the top thereof.
On the under side of barrel 42 and diametrically opposite the center hole of each lset 51 is an opening 55 from which extends a short spout 56. Within barrel 46- are abutments 47 the opposite faces of which are substantially adjacent openings 51 and 52. These abutments are fastened in the barrel and are prcvided with openings for the shaft 30. i
v Between these abutments 47 pistons 50 are attached to the shaft 30, and reciprocate therewith.
Surmounting barrel 42 is a casing 60, sub# stantially oval in cross section and having the end plates 61 and 62. The former plate has an opening which slips over the barrel and abuts-against a packing ring 64 on the face of the fianged member 40. The end 62 is provided with anVA opening which lits over sleeve 54, and a nut 65 on the latter forces the inner face of the plate into contact with the face of plug 53 and at the same time holds end ing 64.
This casing is open on the bottom to allowy the spouts to discharge and the edges of this longitudinal opening are provided with packing strips 63. To hold these lower edges tight against the surface of barrel 42 I provide bands 66 extending around the outside plate 61 in contact with pack! thereof and which are drawntogether bolts 67 at the topthereof.v
J On the top of the casing is an intake pipe I l"('0 from which a suitable connecting tube leads to an elevated batter tank (not shown). The nut 15 forms the stop for the spring actuated parts so that by 'moving this lnut the amount which shaft 3() and its attached pistons moves may be varied.
Having thus described the various features of my inventionits operation is as follows: y

Fig. 1 and through it the barrel 46 until the openings 48 are positioned directly above the openings the drawings the pump is about to eject batter from the various supply spouts 56. At thistime the cam surfaces 28 andV 31 are ipositioned at their greatest distances apart and further rotation of the gear hub will permit the cam portion of 28 to drop into its coacting cam whereby shaft 30 which `is rigidly keyed to the portion`28 will be urged toward the right as viewed in I4`ig.'2.
This is the case because spring 20 abuts against the member 19 which in turn con'- tacts with the outer end of member r27 and thus constantly urges the latter toward the right. This movement of the shaft carries with it the pistons 50 and any batter which is between these/pistons and the abutments 47 to the right thereof will be `discharged through the openings and spouts 56.
This discharge takes place stantaneously so that the baklng mold need not be stopped to receiveithe batter thus permitting constant rotation of the baking machine. Further rotation of ear 33 rotates the cani member 32' in the irection of the arrow in F ig. l-and pushes the coacting cam member yto the left against the lock nut 22 and the tension of spring 20. Member 27 is held against rotation `by the square surface 27 while the shaft 12 on which the members 17 and 19 are mounted sli sleeve 11.
It will beapparent that the movement of pistons 50 may to a certain extent be regulated bythe position of lock nuts 22 and 15, the latter adJusting the final position of the practically in 'l es within the pistons while the former regulates the amount of movement of the pistons. This latter regulation is due to the fact that as the longitudinal'position of the nut 22 is changed, the longitudinal osition of cam 28 will be correspondingly c anged. Then as the coperating spiral cam 31 turns it will' Vcontact with the spiral face of cam 28 ata. point farther alon the spiral andthe con-- tinuedv rotation wi l only move the cam 28 the axial dista-nce from this point to the end of the spiral. To adjust the time of the cam sothat the release takes place when the holes 48 and'55 first of the holes 51. Casing 60 is are opposite it is only necessary to loosen screws 24 and turn the plate 23.
Just before the discharge takes place hole 43 has passed the last one of the holes 52 and on further rotation ho1ei48 comes op osite the lled with batter so that as lthe pistons travel to the left, due to the action ofthe cams, this batter is drawn in through openings 51. Tlis charging takes place during about threequarters of a revolution and during the last portion of this movement the spaces back-f of the pistons are opened by reason of holes 43 coming opposite openings 52. This allows any batter which leaks past the piston to be discharged back into the casing.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have provided a device which effectively accompllshes the objects as set forth in the beginning of this specification and I claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent y l. A dispensing apparatus comprising; an
