PAYNE, a citlzen of the United States, residing at Magnolia, in the county of Rock and Stateof Minnesota,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fur-Stretchers and Iv do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same. r The invention relates to a fur stretcher. The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of fur stretchers and to provide asimple, practical and efficient device of strong, durable and comparatively inexpensive construction designed for stretching the furs of ermine, mlnks, weasels,'musk-rats, skunks, civet-cats, etc., and capable ofeasy operation to stretch a fur without injuring the same.

Vith these and otherobjects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated "n the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claimshereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation partly insection of a fur stretching device constructed in accordance with this invention.v

frame 5 and is provided. with stops 6 consisting of pins or keys and located at spaced points above and below the central portion of the frame 5 to limit the relative sliding movement of the bar and the frame.

The frame is equipped with slidable sections 10 and 11 of'tubular formation forming continuationsof the sides, of-the frame and slidably receiving thesame. The sections 10 and 11 are provided with slots 12 through which extend the lower eyes8 and the section 10 has its lower end 13 recessed to receive oneend of a spreader bar'14 which ispivoted at 15 in the recess ,ofthe section 10. The other sectionll is-provided with a slot 16 through which the spreader bar passes and the outer end of the spreader bar is preferably provided with a hand hold 17. V The relative longitudinal movement of the central bar and the frame is adapted to spread the frame which is locked in its adjustment by means of a pawl or dog 18 mounted in the lower end of the section 11 and arranged to engage notches 19 in the lower edge of the. spreaderbar 15 being preferably employed for maintaining the dog in engagement with the notches 19, but any other form of dog may of course be employed for this purpose.

The bar 14 extends through a slot 20 in the central bar, which is provided with notches 21 adapted to be engaged by a tooth 22 of a slide 23. preferably consisting of a loop of rectangular form and equipped with a set screw Q i'which may be employed for securing it in engagement with the central bar.

The central bar is also provided at oppo site sides with clamps 25 of approximately U-shape mounted in slots 26 of the bar 14 and provided with an adjusting screw or bolt 27 having a winged nut 28 for forcing the jaws of the clamps into engagement with the bottom of the fur, but any other suitable clamp may of course be employed for this 14, 'a spring purpose. The fur to be spread is placed over 7 the frame, and in practice the device will be constructed to stretch a fur approximately three inches, but the size be varied and the amount vices.

What is claimed is:

1. A stretching device of the class described including a central bar, an approximately inverted U-shaped frame provided at the. top with an opening slidably receiving the bar, links connecting the bar with the sides of the frame and arranged to swing to spread the said frame, a transverse spreader bar connected with the sides of the frame and having an adjustment with respect to one of the sides, and means for securing such spreader bar and sides of the frame in their relative adjustment.

2. A stretching device of the class described including a central bar, an approximately inverted U-shaped frame provided at the top with an opening slidably receiving thebar, links connecting the bar with the sides of the frame and arranged to swing to spread the said frame a transverse spreader bar pivotally connected with one side of the frame and extending through the central bar and through the other side'of the frame, said central bar of the device may of stretching may of course be regulated by the locking decentral barwith the spread the saidframe, nected with the central bar and with the sides of theframe,
