Application To all 107mm it may concern Be it known that l, MORTON HorsemsoN, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Noodhnry, in the county of Gloucester, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Reversible-Taper Roughing- Reamer, of Which the following is a specification.
It is frequently desirable in different classes of shipyard and machine shop Work to employ at one time a reamer having a taper converging toward the driving ma chine or motor, and at other times to have the taper of the reanier converge away therefrom, all of which advantages are readily attained. in my invention, which embodies a bar slottedin a novel manner in conjunctioii with a novel construction and collocation of critters which are capable of being reversed or interchanged, whereby I haveproduced in a single. concrete unitary structure a reversihle reamer'by merely changing or reversing the position of the cutters in the bar holding them. I
To the above ends my invention consists of a novel construction of a reversible taper roughing reanier, the object of Which is to provide a tool capable of reaming the Walls of a parallel or straight hole preferably in a piece of metal to a taper, thereby causing the hole to take the form of a frnstmn of a cone, the tool being rovided with a hovel construction and collocation of slots and reversible cutters, whereby by reversing said cutters I am enabled to ream a taper con verging either in one direction or in a direction exactly opposite, While the position of the invention further consists of a novel construction enabling the several cutters to he readiiy and accuratelyinserted and con tered in the bar, so that'their cutting edges shall always remain symmetrical with the axis of the bar.
' further consists of a novel construction of reversible cutters employed.
Fer he purpose of iliustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing on form thereof which is at pres" preferred by me, since the same will he found in practice to give satisfactory-and reliable results, aithough-it isto he under" stood that thefvarious instrumehtalities of whi h my invention consists can he'vari- Specification of Letters Patent,

ously arranged. and organized that mv invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Fignre'l represents a perspective view of a reversible taper roughing reanier eznhody- 111g my invention.
E 2 represents a side elevation of Fig. 1. .Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of my novel reamer having cutters similar to that seen in Fig. 2, but having said cutters reversed, so that the taper er the reanier and learner, the same comprising a straight or tapered cylindrical bar, rod, mandrel or like, 2, one end of which terminates in'a taper shank 3 of the conventional type, which is adapted to be inserted the check or tool holder of any of the conventional forms of driving; machines, such as a rotary pneumatic or electric drilling engine (not shown}.
, In the present embodiment of my invention I locate in the bar 2, the alining slots 4, 5, and 6., which pass diametrically through the axis or? the b24112, and are in the pres ent instance thre inv number. The slot "Z passes dianietrica iy through. the 2; at a point interroediately of and at a right angle to the slots at and 5, While the alining t 8 passes diametrically through the bar at a point intermediate of and at a right ngle to the slots 5 and 6.
In the present instance, l have shown the alining slots i, and as being three in number, and the ihteri'nediate aiining slots '7 and 8 as being two in number, hot it will relative of said slots he increased or diminished, according to. refv nireniehts.
9' designates the cutter inserted in the slot 4., 10' the cutter inserted in the slot 5,
mess.
Figsl and 2.,
1 e H WY w s l have opposite share lect the slots whet in assembled czcending at e m and l I central notches or recesses as l3,'cut in each side at :1 point where the of the bar intersects the plane of the cutter, us will be understood from. Fig. 5, while the intermediete cutters 12, 1i) and 13 are similar to the cutter seen in 6, but of varying lengths, as explained, and have :2: single, centrel, rectangular notch or recess there in, the diinei'isious of said notch 16 be. such as to permit the thickness another contiguous cutter slip into it, where-by M}- one cutter looks into adjacent cutter, thereby causing the series of cutters when assembled to becon'ieautomatical y centered and remain symmetrically placed with respect tl axis of the bar 2.
It will be obvious that fiiwllfi ot in the bar 2 made wider than the cutter by the depth of the notch. 16 in the cutter, as will be understood from l 7, to permit oi? inserting each. cutter in its slot.
The screw 1? screwed into the end i l of the be? 2 has its inner terni zzl engag ng ing the recess 1.5 of the cutter ll. when the construction. seen in l 1gs. l and fl e1n= ployed, and the cuter 9 when the construction seen in 3-3 is employed, for
the purpose of keeping the cutter lod ed into the notches of tile adjacent cutters, thus effectively securing all the cuter-s firmly in. their proper positions,
18 designates dununy key lnSBItcl 1D. the slot 1:), the latter being located on one side of the slot flertliest from the end 14% oil? the bur 2, as seen in Fig. 2'', which lzey maintains the last cutter 9 in ion with respect to the axis of the bar, being; ug'iparent that each cutter cxcept the lost one 9, in Figs. 1 and 1.2, and ll in 3 locked in position by the next adjacent one, hence it is desirable to provide the dummy key 18 to secure the lost cutter or ll the case may be,
The object providing the large cutter cutter ll with the notches to )ermit said cutters ll rev'rs when desired from the positions seen in 1 and to the giosition seen in F 3, will he explained.
it will be egg-ascent since the cutting edge of one cutter overlaps that of its adjacent cutter, as seen in F 1 or 4:, there no liability of circun'lferential ridges being formed, where the cut 0r one e21 ls and that of the. next begins, thus a, smcoth straight wall is provided the taper reamed hole.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art, that when the cutters are assembled as seen in. Figs. ,1 and 2, a very ellicient tool is provided capable of rezoning the walls of a, parallel or straight hole to a taper, and cons ingithehole when reamed to take the form of a frustum of cone, the super of the.
reamed hole when the'cutters are ussen'ibled, as seen in Figs. 1 and :2, converging away from the driving machine or motor as is evident. When it is desired to have the taper of the reamed hole converge toward the driving machine or motor, it is only necessary to loosen'l'l'ie set screw 1? and collocate the cutter as seen in Fig. 3, the large cutter beii'ig inserted in the slot 6, and the small cutter '11 in the slot d, and the intermediate cutters being also reversed so as to appear seen in w 3, whereby the taper oi the rezoned hole will converge toward the driv i3 machine or motor. tion the taper of the reamed hole can con-- verge either in one direction, or in a direction exactly opposite, while the position of the driving engine or motor remains the same. This feature of a reversible remner being formed in asingle unitary structure is a very desirable feature in certain classes of shipyard or machine shop practice, and is readily accomplished in. my device by merely changing the position ofthe cutters in. the bar holding them, as hereto-store explc-ined.
have thus in a single structure provided a, reversible ream 1', wherein the cutters can be inserted in position. or interchanged or reversed in a very short space of time, and in case of injury to any of the cutters, it can be readily sharpened or replaced. by a, new one, as is evident, and by my device a single reamer structure can readily do the Work which has heretofore necessitated the employment of two reumers having reverse tapers.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of a reversible taper roughing reumer which em bodies the features of advantage enumerated desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described u preferred embodiment thereof which will the found in practice to give satisfactory and relic, le results, it to be understood that the seine is susceptible 01E modification in various particulars without departing from. the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
