v INVENToRs' WmA E eri and Ben Garland BY ATTORNEY UNITED STATES' PATENT OFFICE;
WILLIAM ArDfEGILBnRT AND BEN GARLAND, or vWILLows,V cALrFonNIA.
,Hoer-Box.,l
To all-whom t may' concern."
f DEGILBERT and BEN GARLAND, bothfci'tizens of the United States, residing at'Wilflows, in the county of Glenn, Stateof California, have invented certain new and useful 'Improvements in rHog- Boxes; and we do. declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference vbeingV had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe characters of 4reference marked thereon, 'which form a part of this application. l l A This invention relatesto improvements in hog boxes, the principal object being to provide a boxinto'which'a single hog at a time may be driven: or otherwise induced to enter, and when once inside may be held or clamped in position so thatitA will be an easy matter toY vaccinate or otherwise operate upon the hog.
Another object is to provide a box by means of which a hog may be handled by one man. v
A further object vof the invention isto produce a. simple and inexpensive device and one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects we accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indica-te corresponding Vparts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the. box showing the same as it is positioned for the entrance of a hog therein, but showing the entering gate closed.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the box, the same having been tipped over and resting on its runners, the side shown being the one resting on the ground in Fig. 1.
'Fig 3 is a vertical transverse section through the box.
Referring now more particularly to the characters in reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes a plurality of frames, suitably spaced apart.
Secured Vto one edge of these frames inside the same is a wall 2, while on the opposite side is a similar wall 3, the upper half 4 of which (referring to the positioning of the boxes depicted in Fig; 1) slants inwardly toward the top.
- forelegs.
portion as at`5 and extending lengthwise of the same inside'the box formed by the walls 2, 3 and 4, is a clamping board 5 cen- Y trally of which and adjacent its lower end is pivoted a bar 6 which extends through a slotted metal plate 7 secured to the wall f form the bottom ofthe box when' the same ispositioned as shown in Fig. 1.
They are held Vclosed when desired by any 4suitable latch mechanism such as isl shown at 12.
Specification of Letters'la'cent. Patented Jill-y 27, 1920. L Aiipumibnmea september l3, 1919. Seriai No. 321,393.`
' Hinged lto the upper edge of this slanting Sliding gates 13 are positioned at each u end of the box.
Near the doors 11 the walls 2 and 3 are provided with a plurality of alined oriices 111 suitably spaced, any pair of which holes are adapted to receive an iron bar 15 therethrough for a purpose which will appear. v
The operation of the box is as follows One of the gates 13 is raised and a hog induced to enter therein. The gate is then let down. Supposing it is desired to operate on the forward portion of the hog, the bar 15 is slipped through those holes which are nearest the forelegs of the animal, so that the bar' will project just behind the that the clamping board 5 will squeeze the hog between the said board and the opposite side at the same time pressing it toward the floor and the bar 15. The box is then tilted over onto the runners 10, and the door 11 which is adjacent the forward end of the hog is raised. A
As soon as this is done, the animal may be operated upon, its position being then substantially as if lying on the ground, its forward portion being held from movementy by means of the bar 15. The hind legs of the hog rest on the other door 11, which is kept closed.
Should it be desired to operate on the rear portion of the hog, the forward door 11 The bar 6 is then pushed inso f is kept closed and the rod l5 positioned adjacent its hind legs to hold the animal against movement at that end.- Y
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that we have produced such a' device assubstantially fulfils the object of the` invention asset forth herein.Vv .Y Y While this specification sets forth in de tail the present and preferred construction Y' of the device, still in practice such devia- Vtions' fromsuch detail may be resorted to as 'do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as' defined by the appended Having thus described. our invention what we claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l.V AY hog box comprising sidewalls, slid- Y Vable endigatesfdoors between the walls at i 20 oneedgethereof, and a clamping board "inside the boxl hinged to one of the walls on the opposite edge thereof from the doors,
fand extending'lengthwise of the walls, and
treads whenfentering Ythe box, a clamping the wall to board extending lengthwise inside the box and hinged to one of the walls on the edge thereofjopposite the doors, meanswhereby the clamping board may be pressed toward Athe said wall, and runners on the outside of the wall whereby the box may be tilted to rest thereon to allow the doors toY be opened andthe hog operated upon.
' 3. 'A hog box comprising side walls, slid able end gates, doors between the) walls at one ledge thereof and on whichthe hog treads when entering thebox, a clamping yboard extending lengthwise inside the box and hinged toone ofthe walls on the edge thereof opposite the doors', a bar pivoted to Y the board and-extending through the opposite wall and adapted to'press the board toward the wall to which it is hinged, and a lbar adapted `to projectfinto the box lbetween the walls at 'suitable points, the walls being .provided ,with alinedorificesY for theV purpose. Y y
In testimony whereof we aix our signaturesY 1n presence of two witnesses.
