Hangers fnrWaiking-Beams for Oil-Wells.

MARCUS HULINGS, OF EMLENTON, AND WILLIAM J. INNIS OF OIL CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HANGERS FOR WALKING-BEAMS FOR OIL-WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,807, dated J anuary'l l, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARCUS HULINGS, of Emlenton, and WILLIAM J. Davis, of Oil City, both in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hangers for VValking-Beams of Oil or other Wells, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in the novel construction of a hanger for walkingbeams for oil or other wells, said hanger being provided with journal-bearings at its lower end, the journals working in said bearings being on a horizontal line with the working center of the walking-beam, so that during the vibratory motion of said beam the plunger or pump-rod will travel in nearly a plumb line; also, consists in attaching to the faceof the hanger two slotted vertical cap -pieces, said pieces forming the top bearings for the journals of the rod-holder; also, an oscillatin g rod-holder, through which the plunger or pump-rod (with sucker-rod attached) passes, and is held in a vertical position by means of set-screws in the rod-holder. The object of this invention is so to construct the hanger of a walking-beam of oil or other wells that during the vibratory motion of said beam the plunger of pump-rod is made to operate in nearly a plumb line.
Figure 1 of the drawing represents a front view of our invention, showing the slotted cap-pieces and rod-holder. Fig. 2 represents a side view of our invention; Fig. 3 represents a detail view of the rod-holder. Fig. 4 represents a T-shaped plunger or pump-rod.
Letter A represents the walking beam broken off near the center. B is the hanger, having journal-bearings a a. O O are adjustable cap-pieces, having slots 0 c and screwbolts b b. D is the pump-rod holder, having journals 0 c and set-screws d d.
Operation. The operation of our invention is as follows,
viz: When the well is in condition to be pumped, we first secure the hanger to theunder side of the walking-beam, and directly over the opening of the well, by means of a screw-bolt passing through the beam and firmly held on top of the same by a nut. At the lower end' of the hanger are bearings for the journals of the oscillating pump-rod holder to operate in said bearings should be on a horizontal line with the working center of the walking-beam, so that during the vibration of said beam the pump-rod will travel in nearly a plumb line, thereby preventing the wearing away or oth erwise injuring the rod and stuffing-box. At-
tached to the face of the hanger, by means of screw-bolts, are slotted adjustable cap-pieces, the lower ends of which fit over and form the top bearings of the rod-holder; said cap-pieces can be raised and lowered by loosening nuts on the screw-bolts. The plunger or pump-rod (to which is attached the sucker-rod) passes through the rod-holder, and is held in position by means of set-screws, and can be vertically adjusted at will of the operator.
The object of raising and lowering the cappieces is as follows: When the plunger and sucker-rod are to be removed for repairs or any other purpose, the cap pieces are raised, and the rod-holder with plunger and sucker.- rod is lifted from its bearings in the hanger, without interfering with the proper adjustment of the plunger and sucker-rod.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj j 1. In combination with the walking-beam A, the hanger B having journal-bearings a a at its lower end, slotted vertical adjustable cap-pieces O O, and oscillating pump-rod holder D, when said parts are constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the hanger B, constructed as herein described.
