" (ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES RALPH W. PUTNAM, 0F WATERBURY, VERMONT.
POLISHING-WHEEL. "a 5 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1920.
Application filed November 26, 1919. Serial No. 340,767.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, RALPH IV. PUTNAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vaterbury, in the county of \Vashington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Polishingheel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in polishing wheels which are commonly known in the trade as ironing wheels, an object of the invention being to provide an improved arrangement of scroll on the under surface of the wheel which prevents the accumulation of abrasive or other material used for grinding or polishing the surface of stone at any one point on the wheel, but always tends to move such abrasive material toward the center of the wheel.
A further object is to provide a wheel of the character stated, which may be fed either from the center or from the outside and on which the scroll is formed of curved flanges in circular series, the flanges being of quarter length and arranged in general spiral form with tapering forward ends.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings-- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of my improved polishing wheel;
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view illustrating a modification; and
Fig. 4 is an edge view of Fig. 3.
My improved polishing wheel comprises a plate or disk 1 having on its under faces a scroll made up mainly of curved flanges 2 which are arranged in general spiral form, which extend a quarter way around the surface of the disk and which have tapering flanged ends 3.
The ends of one radial series of flanges 2 terminate at points between the radial series of flanges adjacent thereto. The outer flanges 3 are preferably longer than the inner flanges 2 and at one end extend to the outer edge of the disk 1 so as to provide a take-up or inlet to start the abrasive material toward the center of the wheel.
My invention is, of course not limited to the particular material used either in the construction of the flanges or of the disk and I may use any suitable metal for the flanges, and either metal, Wood or any other material for the disk without departing from my invention.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I illustrate a modification in which the abrasive material or other material is fed to the center of the wheel and in this form of my invention I provide 6 a hopper 4 which communicates with a relatively large opening 5 in the center of the disk and is provided with a crossbar 6. In
this form of my invention the driving lugs 7 are formed as a part of the bar 6, while in 7 the preferred form the driving lugs 7 are fixed directly to the disk 1 and an opening 8 ids pireferably provided in the center of the My invention therefore resides broadly in the provision of a scroll in which the elements thereof are formed of curved flanges extending approximately a quarter way around the surface of the disk.
Various slight changes may be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and al- 8 terations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the character stated, com prising a disk or plate, a scroll on the under face of the disk or plate, said scroll of gen eral spiral form and composed of a plurality of series of curved flanges extending approximately one-quarter distance around the disk or plate with the forward ends of 9 the flanges of one radial series located between the flanges of adjacent radial series.
2. A device of the character stated, comprising a disk or'plate, a scroll on the under face of the disk or plate, said scroll of general spiral form and composed of a plurality of series of curved flanges extending approximately one-quarter distance around the disk or plate with the forward ends of the flanges of one radial series located between 1 the flanges of adjacent radial series, said flanges having tapering forward ends, and curved flanges constituting the outer portions of the scroll, said last-mentioned flanges having tapering forward ends ex- 1 ten i g to.- the ed e of the late or disk.
