CONTROLLING MEANs r0RrowER-TRANsMITTERs.
Original application filed February 8, 1917, Serial No. 147,296.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Divided and this application filed October 30, 1918. Serial No. 260,254.
filed February 8, 1917, of' which'this application is a division.
The objects of the invention are to provide a controlling means for power transmitters which is simple in constructiomhas A its connections substantially inclosed, and
which can readily be adjusted to suit the requirements of individual operators.
In the present embodiment a hollow, column is used to support a sewing machine between its base and top, a power transmitter beingalso carried by the column and operatively connected to the machine in any desiredway. The controlling means for the transmitter includes a clutch, and actuating connections for the transmitter extend from the clutch through the column to its base and thence outwardly to a treadle, means being provided for adjusting the connections in order to vary the position of the treadle as required.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a power-stand having my controlling means applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of the base of the stand taken at right angles to the view in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a supporting column, showing the clutch-controlling connections inclosed therein. Fig. 4 is a plan of the floor plate to which the column is secured. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken through the seats 14 in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a view of the upper end of the column and the power transmitter, showing the controlling connections to the clutch. Fig. 7 is a view at right angles to Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a perspective of a part of the connections, showing the manner in which they may be adjusted.
Referring to the drawings 1 is a base or floor-plate having a central raised portion and depressed seats 2, the plate being seupper threaded end of the bolt. openings 11 in the column allow access to cured to the floor by bolts 3 passing through the depressed seats and lag screws 4 pass Patented July 27, 1920.
ing through the outer portion of the plate.
The raised portion has a central elongated aperture 5 having at one end an enlargement 6, the enlargement bemg adapted'to receive the head of the bolt 7 whose shank may then be slid into the narrow portion of the aperture with its head in engagement with the lower surface of the plate. Mounted on the base is a hollow column 8 having an apertured cross piece 9 through which the bolt 7 passes, a nut 10 being provided for the Lateral,
the bolt and nut. The lower end of the column is provided with an outwardly flanged portion 12, and adjusting screws 13 passing through said portion are adapted to engage the raised'seats 14 provided on the base or floor plate, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. Lock nuts 15 are provided for the adjusting screws. A combined power transmitter and shaft hanger 16 is carried by the upper end of the column. I Referring to Fig. 6, it will be seen that the transmitter is supported by a yoke whose arms 17 carry center pins 18 engaging trunnions on the transmitter. The shank 19 of the yoke is secured in the upper end of the column 8 by a set-screw 20. A shaft 21 is supported in the transmitter by a bearing 22. A loose pulley-wheel 23 is mounted on each side of the transmitter and is connected by a belt 23 to a corresponding sewing machine 24 on a shelf 25 supported by column 8. As shown more fully in my pending application Serial No. 85,535, filed March 21, 1916, the
pulley-wheel 23has a lateral brake wheel extension 26 formed in its outer face with a recess presenting a conical clutch face adapted for engagement by the conical face 27 of a clutch disk 28 formed with a hub 29. Rigidly secured to the shaft 21 by a set-screw 30 is a hub 31 having a pair of radially projecting driving arms 32. The hub 29 of the clutch disk 28 is slidably mounted on the shaft 21 and hub 31, and the driving arms 32 fit in slots in the clutch disk. A ball thrust bearing 33 is slidably mounted on the shaft 21 and is adapted to engage the end of hub 29. A bracket 34 projecting from the transmitter frame carries a pin 35 on which is pivotally mounted spring 45 is interposed between the bracket 7 34 and a socket on the arm 41, said spring tending to move the roller 44 away from the cam arm 87 and to an inoperative position. The arm 42 is apertured to receive the hooked upper end of a rod 46 which extends downwardly through the column '8 to a point near its base. The lower end of the rod 46 is connected to a crank arm '47 on a rock-shaft 48 journaled in the column 8. A second crank arm 49 projects from the rock-shaft outside of the column 8. To the arm 49 is connected one end of an adjustable link comprising two rods 50 connected by a clamp block 51. and setscrews 52. The other end of the link is connected to'a crank-arm 53 depending from one of the trunnions 54 of a treadle 55,
[which latter is supported by hearing brackets 56.
In use a plurality of columns are set up in alinement, and by the provision ofthe adjustable link formed by the rods 50 the position of the treadle may be varied to suit the requirements of'the individualoperator. 'Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. In combination, a sewing machine stand comprising an upright hollow column carrying operatively connected power transmitters and machines manually operated levers at the foot of said column, rockers journaled in the lower portion of said col-' umn, connections extending within said column between said rockers and transmitters, andadjustable connections between said levers and said rockers. I
'2. In combination, a sewing machine stand comprising an upright hollow column'carrying operatively connected power transmitters and machines, treadles disposed externally of but adjacent the foot of said column, transverse rock-shafts journaled in the lower portion of said column and provided with angularly arranged crank-arms,
connections extending within said column between certain of said crank-arms and said 'power transmitters, and adjustable pitman connections between others of said crankarms and said treadles.
3. The combination of a hollow support, an operatively connected power transmitter and machine carried by said support, a lever for controlling said transmitter and having a cam arm, a second lever having a roller adapted to engage said cam arm, a spring normally pressing said roller away from sa d cam arm, an inclosed link connected at one end to said secondlever, a rock-shaft having an arm" connected to the other end power-transmitter and machine carried by said support, means for controlling said transmitter comprising two levers one of said levers having a cam-arm and the other lever having 'means adapted to engage said cam-arm, a link connected to one of said levers, a rock-shaft operatively connected to said link, a'treadle, and an operative connection between the treadle and the rockshaft.
5. The combination of a hollow support, an operatively connected power-transmitter and machine'carried by said support, manually operated means at the foot of said support, a rocker journaled in the lower portion of said support, a connection extending within said support between said rocker and transmitter, and an adjustable connection between the manually operated means and the rocker.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
