GLASS-PANE HOLDER.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1920.
Application filed February 14, 1919. Serial No. 276,984.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANTIME MOTTEAU, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at No. 127 2 Garay street, Buenos Aires, Argentina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glass-Pane Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a novel means for holding in position the glass panes in metallic window frames and its object is to provide a simple and economical means whereby the window pane may be held inl positiony before putting on the mastic, said means being capable` of retaining such glass panes, even in case the mastic should fall out of the frame'.
To the above end there have been proposed heretofore different means, all of them, however, consisting in Xing to the webs ofthe angle bars of the frame by means of screws, rivets, or the like, stops or retainers of any suitable form. This, however, considerably weakens the general structure, gives it disagreeable appearance, and greatly increases its dead weight.
According to my present invention I attain the same results by making a longitudinal slot of suitable length along one web of certain of the bars of the frame and at any suitable point of the same, and passing through the said slot a small metal strap which is then bent over against the surface of the glass.
Where slots for jointing have been already made in the webs of the bars, las is the case in the well known fenestra joints, and in those disclosed in my co-pending application for Letters Patent, Serial Number 276,983, filed of even date herewith, it is convenient to use such slots, so as not to diminish the resistance of the general Vstructure and to avoid making new slots.
In order that my present invention may be clearly understood and easily carried into practice, reference will be made now to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a sectional view of an iron frame of ordinary section provided with a holding device according to my present invention.
Fig. 2 is a like view of a fenestra iron frame,
Fig. 3 shows a modified construction wherein the holding device is inserted through the upper cut of the fenestra frame and Fig. 4 ,shows the holding device as applied to an iron frame according to Vmy above-identified, copending application.
Similar characters of reference indicate the same or like parts throughout the above figures. It must be clearly understood that although the present device is shown and def scribed as applied to specific frames and profiles it may be also used in connection withl all kind of suitable iron or other frames.
l is a comparatively flexible metal strap, as for instance,a brass band which yis inserted through a slot 2 in the web 3 of the angle-iron division bar ofthe frame, which slot may be made at any suitable point of the said web.' lVhen a deep slot is specially made Vfor yany purpose, the metal strap is provided with a corrugation which fits eX- actly in the slot, but where the slots are, such corrugations may be dispensed with, the metal strap being already rmly imprisoned within the said slot. The other web 4 of the bar provides a support for the glass panes to be fastened in place, this being true whether the panes rest directly upon the web 4 in Fig..1, or are supported by the web of a second bar, which is separate from and disposed at right angles to the first bar, and which, in turn, is supported thereby, as in Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
Figs. 2 and 3 show the invention as applied to a fenestra frame, the metal strap 1 being inserted in the lower and upper slot respectively in the web of the division bar. Said strap is then bent upward or downward, as shown, and then over against the glass pane, which is thus held in position by the same.
In the embodiment of Fig. 4, the metal strap 1 is inserted in the slot before fixing the rivets 5, the strap being firmly imprisoned by the said rivets.
While the strap-holding slot may be located at any suitable point in the web 3, as has already been stated, it is preferably formed in the said web 3 adjacent the junction of that web with the web 4, as indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, in which instance the bends immediately adjacent the central portion of the strap will be interposed bein which the strap isrengaged is located comparatively close to the free longitudinal Y or outer edge of web 3.
Although lthe holding device has been shown and described in connection with slots relating to the oint, it is obvious that Vit may be also applied toslots made in any other parts of the iron webs and this without diminishing the resistance of the material or` considerably increasing the dead weight of the structure.
Having now fully described and .ascertained the nature of my present invention and inwliatmanner'the saine is to be carried into practice, I declare vthat what I claim is z' Y l. Means for holding glass panes I in frames, comprising afbar of angle section embodying va pair-of longitudinal webs arranged at right angles to each other, one web providing support `for a pair of panes atopposite sides or' the other web, vand the latter web being provided with a transverse opening; and a metal strap having its central portion mounted in said opening and its two end portions iirst bent vertically against the vopposite side faces of the second-named web directly adjacent tlieropening'and then bent laterally in opposite directions away from said second-named web directly against the outer faces of the panes so as to lie vflat thereagainst.
2. Means for holding glass panes in frame-s2 comprising a Vbar or" angle sectionv embodying a pair of longitudinal webs arranged at right angles to each other, one web providing support for a pair of panes at opposite sides ofthe other web, and the latter Vweb being provided adjacent its point of connectionto the iirstnamed web with a transverse opening; and a metal strap having its central portion fitted in said opening and its two endportions first bent upwardly against the opposite side Jfaces oi' the second-named web directly adjacentthe opening and between said side facesand the adjacent edges otliepanesJ and then bent horizontally i opposite directions away iroin said second-named web directly againsttlie outer faces of the panes so as tol lie flat thereupon.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ANTIME MOTTEAU.
