IMPROVEMENT IN REACTION-PUMPS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS RHODES, J r., of Clyde, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reaction-Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon wh ich form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a reactionpump, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my pump complete; Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the cylinder-heads; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the pump-stock.
A represents the pump-cylinder; B, the pump-stock; G, the lower, and D the upper, cylinder-head. The cylinder-heads O and D are each on its inner side provided with a circular groove, a, in which the end of the cylinder fits. Through each head, from the outside into the groove a on the inside, are formed two or more oblong holes or slots, 12 b, and on each end of the cylinder are made corresponding round holes with female-screw threads.
Screws d d are then inserted through said holes into the cylinder. A half-turn of the screw-heads, which are elongated, will admit of the cylinder-heads being removed while they are fastened by turning the elongated screwheads crosswise over the slotsb b. Each cylinder-head is provided with four funnel-shaped holes, 0 e, and in the upper head I), on the inside, covering said holes, are four valves, ff, made of leather in two parts, as shown in Fig. 3, each part being fastened with a screw or bolt to the outside and opposite edges of the inside portion of the head between twoof the holes. The valve for the lower head 0 is formed by cutting four separate valves, h h, in one piece of leather, leavingthe center whole, at which place they are fastened to the head with a screw or bolt, as shown in Fig.2. E represents the piston-rod, which is operated by a compound lever, consisting of a double lever, H, attached to the upper end of the rod, and pivoted at i to the pump-stock, and at k to another lever, I, which in turn is pivoted to the pump-stock at m. To make a common lever of this compound lever, remove the bolts iand m and insert another bolt through the lever H, and through the same holes Where the bolt m was. This will give a long stroke, and requires more power than the compound lever, which gives a short stroke, and isadapted to wells and cisterns about the house where children do most of the pumping. With the funnel-shaped holes 6 in the cylinder-heads the plunger in the cylinder may work easily, for no suction is required to open the valves and allow the cylinder to fill with .water. When a vacuum is created it is filled by the pressure of water against the valves.
In the pump-stock B I use but one valve, J, which opens and closes alternately with the movement of the lever. With the downward movement the valve is opened and falls over the water-passage from the lower end of the cylinder up the pump-stock; and with the upward movement of the lever the water is forced out of the lower end of the cylinder into and up the pump-stock, and the valve is closed against and over the opening in the upper end of the cylinder where the valve is fasttened. This valve is always open for the return of water to the base of the well or cistern when the pumping is stopped.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The single valve J, arranged to alternately close the opening in the upper end of the pump'stock and the water-passage, in combination with the cylinder A, substai i -ally as and for the purpose herein described??? 1 2. The lever H, pivoted at i to the pumpstock, and at k to the lever I, which is also pivoted to the pumpstock, to form a simple or compound lever, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
