Be it known that I, CLAUDE L. FRIEL, a
citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at the city of Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which are then printed and afterward numbered. This necessitates setting up the same subject matter as many times as there are checks on a page, and then subsequently numbering the checks which requires the handling of the sheets a second time.
It is the object of my invention toset up the matter for a check only once, and successively print such matter as many times on a sheet as there are to be blank checks on a page, and at the same time to successively number the same.
In the drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine designed to print 3 checks to the sheet, Fig. 2, is a top plan of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a front end view; Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section on the line 00 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a vertical cross section on the line 00 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a vertical section of aportion of the mechanism on the line a? of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a detail of the check carriage-and its operating mechanism; Fig. 8 isa detail of the regulating mechanism of certain parts of theprinting mechanism; Figs. 9, 10,-and11, are enlarged details. p V
' Referring to the drawings 15 are the floor membersof the frameto which are secured the side members 16 that are connected-by suitabletransverse members 17. Secured to and resting upon the top of-the frame is the inclined table or board 18 upon which the sheets 19 that are to be printed into blank checks are deposited. At the lower end of this table are the positioning fingers 20, which are secured to shaft 21, mounted in bearings 22, secured to and part of the side members of the frame. In front offingers 21 are the grippers which consist of the lower finger members 23 ,and the upper finger members 24 which last fingers are secured to shaft 25 mounted inbearings 26 secured to carriage 27. ward end, which roller enters a cam groove 35 in wheel 36, mounted on shaft 38. The rotation of wheel 36 through connecting mechamsm causes plate 29 to depress the free end of arm .28, and thereby rock shaft 25, and cause the free ends of fingers 24 to be raised and they-remain in theirraised position until carriage 27 reaches its forward limit of travel, at which time member23 is below and. member 24 is above the edge of the sheet that is to be printed. The other end of lever 6 1 carries a roller 66 which is engaged by cam wheel 69 on shaft 38. This wheel is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7 andhas three short teeth 70 and one long tooth 71. When these .teethengage roller 66by means of connecting mechanism roller 18 is raised. The short teeth provide for the momentary raising of the roller which occurs while the carriage is traveling to the rear, and the long tooth holds roller 48' elevated while the carriage is traveling to the head.
The carriage is caused to travel by means 7 of the following mechanism. In a printing press a frame; a carriage mounted thereon to travel from head to tail and from tail to head; means to cause an intermittent movement of said carriage as it travels toward the tail and a continuous movement as it travels toward the head; means to release said paper when the carriage reaches the tail, a printing mechanism mounted on said frame; and means to operate said printing mechanism to cause it to print upon the paper on the carriage when the carriage stops in its travel toward the tail.

In a printing press a frame; a carriage mounted therein to travel from head to tail and from tail to head; a lever operatively connected to said carriage at one end and pivotally connected at the other end to said frame; a cam wheel mounted in said frame, said wheel having an irregular shaped cam groove in its side; a roller mounted on said lever and entering into said cam groove; whereby when said wheel is rotated said frame is caused to travel from head to tail and back and make periods of stops in its and back; grippers mounted on said frame; means to open said grippers at the ends of the travel of said frame; a lever operatively connected to said carriage at one end and pivotally connected at the other end to said frame; a cam wheel mounted in said frame, said wheel having an irregular shaped cam groove in its side; a roller mounted on said lever and entering into said cam groove,
whereby when said wheel is rotated said frame is caused to travel from head to tail and back and make periods of stops in its travel from head to tail; printing mechanism mounted on said frame; and means to operate said printing mechanism in the periods of the stop in the travel of said frame from head to tail.
6. In a printing press, a carriage mounted therein to travel from head to tail and back; grippers mounted on said carriage; means to open said grippers at the ends of travel of said carriage; a lever operatively connected to said carriage at one end and to the press frame at the other end; a cam wheel mounted in the press frame, said wheel having an irregular groove in its side, said groove being enlarged at different points; a roller mounted on said lever adapted to travel in said groove, whereby when said wheel isrotated said carriage is caused to travel from head to tail and back and make periods ofv stops in its travel toward the tail; and gages adjustably mounted upon said carriage, whereby the position of the carriage at the periods of stop can be changed as desired.
