ENVELOP.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOSEPH 181-11, a citizen of Russia, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of .Milwaukee. andState of Viscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ;Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an envelop which can notbe opened after being sealed without detecting the fact that the same has been tampered with, any act of opening the envelop also requiring mutilation or removal of the postage stamp positioned thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety envelop in which the postage stamp when applied constitutes the final sealing means of the envelop so that to obtain access to the contents of the envelop requires either the removal or destruction of the Government postage stamp found in the usual position upon the front side of the structure.
With these general objects in view the invention it will be seen is both simple and easy to manufacture being formed in the manner hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank of which the envelop is formed illustrated in its open position,
Fig. 2 is a view of the blank with the end flap secured folded, a portion of the blank being cut away.
Fig. 3 illustrates a further step in folding the blank, showing the rear top flap folded.
a shows the rear bottom flap folded and secured in position.
Fig. is a front elevation of the folded envebp ready for the final adhesive securing of the rear bottom flap member.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. with the envelop completely secured in its closed position, the securing position of the postage stamp being indicated by dotted lines, and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the locking connector for the end flaps.
My form of envelop consists of a blank 10 having a rectangular body portion 11, the opposite ends of which carry end flaps 12 for folding inwardly upon the lines 13 into Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 1y 2'7, 192(),
Application filed January 9, '1919. Serial No. 270,311.
overlapping relations. A pair of receiving slits 14: is provided adjacent the free end of each of the flaps 12 which are brought into aline'ment with each other when the flaps are overlapped. for the locking reception of a wedge-shaped member or key' 15 as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. V
A rear top flap 16 substantially triangular inform is provided upon the upper edge of the body 11 adapted for folding upon the line 17 for overlying thefolded end flaps 12 and for-sealing thereon by means. of the marginal adhesive 18, such folded position of the flap 16 being illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. A rear bottom flap 19 of general triangular form is carried by the body 11 opposite the flap 16, being foldable upon said body at the line 20 and at which times the marginal adhesive 21 upon the inner side of the flap 19 will be secured to the end flaps 12. The missive will be inserted in the envelop prior to the closing of the bottom flap 19 and when the envelop appears as illustrated in Fig. -3, of the drawings, although the missive may be inserted if desired prior to the sealing of the top flap 16 and when the envelop is arranged as shown in Fig. 2.
A neck 22 projects from the free end of the flap 19 provided with a rectangular opening 23 through whicha locking tongue 24 at the free end of the flap 16 may project for threading through spaced slits 25 in the neck 22 and beneath a keeper strip 26 positioned between the slit 25. Arcuate arms 27 extend from the opposite outer corners of the neck 22 one of which arms is adapted to be threaded through slits 28 in the rear top flap 16 adjacent one upper corner of the envelop at the rear side thereof. The arms 9 27 have parallel terminal portions 29 adapted to be brought over the upper edge of the envelop for folding down upon the front or addressed side thereof. One of these terminal portions 29 is adapted to be projected through parallel slots 30 at the upper right hand corner of the front of the envelop at a point usually designated for the application of a Government postage stamp. 'ihe arms 27 and terminal portions 29 are provided with a suitable adhesive for securing the same upon the contacted portions of the rear top flat 16 and the body 11 of the blank as is herein described.
hen the missive is positioned Within the envelop and the flaps folded and sealed as described, a postage stamp 31 indicated by dotted lines in F 6 of the drawings, is
V adhesively secured over the slots 30 and the terminal portion 29 of one of the arms 27 so that the flap 19 is secured over the top flap a letter sealed in the ordinary manner so that my envelop al'l'ords great, protection against tampering, the slitted arrangements 26, 28 and 30 being further means by which the opening of the envelop without mutila tion is, renderedsubstantially impossible.
hat I claim as new is L- 7' An envelop comprising a rectangular body portion having slits in one corner thereof, an end flap formed on the opposite side edges of said body and each provided with a pair of spaced slits, securing means arranged in said slits whenthe flaps are folded triangular-shaped flap formed on one edge of Said y a d Prov ded a ts apex with a locking tongue, said flap also having slits in one corner thereof, a trian ular-shaped rear bottom flap formed on said body at an edge remote from said rear top flap, a reduced neck portion formed from the apex of said rear bottom flap, said neck portion having spaced slits therein, at the point of juncture of said neck with said flap, and oppositely extending curved:- arms formed on the free end of said neck and having adhesive on one side thereof, said arms adapted when in folded position to beextended through the slits in the body and rear top flap said look ing tongue extended through the slits of said neck whensaid rear top and bottom flaps are folded against'said body, for'holda ing said flaps against separation.
In testimony. whereof I afiix my signature.
