. T all whom t may concern.'
' contemplates the provision ofapair of ro ta Be it known that I, LANDo C. KAsArrM, a citizen ofthe United States, and resident of Laporte, inthe county of Laporte and State of Indiana, havev invented certain new andl useful Improvements in Street-Indicators for Cars, of whicli specification. Thisv invention 'has Vreference generally to the following isa indicators and more particularly relates vto a street indicator especially adapted for use on street cars.
Itisthe primaryV aim -and' object yo th1s invention toprovide a housing adapted to,
be mounted in' the 'front part of a; street car for operativelyl receiving novel street indicating means, means being alsomountedin the housing and in connection withk the street indicatingmeans forV operating; theV indicating means soA as to successively disating'means vso as to consequently insure .an
elicient operation of theu indicating means. lMore speciiically, the present invention tably mounted rollers for receiving .the indicating web aswell as another roller fric'- tionally engageable with the intermediate portion 'of the web for moving ,the web from one roller tothe other, manually operable means Ybeing incidentally arranged in lconnection with the yroller .for partially rotating the operating roller a predeter- `mined'distance 1 f Still furthe'nthe invention Yhas to. provide' means for holding the web in frictional en-l gagement with the operating roller to cilitate the movement 'of the web.
Among the otherV aimsand objects ofthe present invention may berecited the provision of a device of the charactermentioned with aview tocompactne'ss and in which the number of parts are few, the con! connection withv they accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, wherein I disc lose a Apreferred embodiment of the' invention forthe purpose of illustration.
Theinvention is .clearly illustrated in the' accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section throughv the housing showing the invention proper in side elevation.
Fig. 2 a horizontal section through the housing showingthe invention properl in top plan.
F ig. 3 isa side elevational detail of the controlling means for the Voperating roller.
` Similar characters ofA reference are employed in all of the above described views,
to indicate corresponding parts.
Referringnow, more particularly, to the accompanying"y drawings, I provide a housing l, which may be and preferably is of a rectangular configuration being provided with a sight-opening 2, in the front end thereof. This housing is adapted to be mounted in the Jfront end of a car in such a position as to be within the view of the passengers.` Mounted adjacent top and bottom of the housing and transversely of the sides are a pair of shafts 3, while rollers 4 and 5, are rotatably mounted on the shafts the upper roller 5 having a resilient action for a purpose that will presently appear. An indicating web 6.V is connected to the `lower roller 4 at one end while the opposite'end is connected to the roller 5. This web asis apparent upon reference to the drawing is windable about the rollers and is also provided throughout its length and transversely thereof with'the names Aof streets in the order 'in which the car approaches them. i
tion of the` web directly behind the sight opening. 2 and valso toprovide means for operating or moving the web Vfrom the roller 4 to.' the rollerv 5, I have rotatably mounted another shaft 7 transversely of ythe housing and' in the sides thereof adjacent the forward end'. vAlarge roller 8, is carried by `this shaftjand is maintained in frictional engagement withy the inner or rear vsurfaceof the web and when the roller S' is partially rotated the web will be moved a short distance ina corresponding direction. Friction rollers 9, are rotatably mountedl in suitable brackets 10,. above and below the sight 2 and transversely of the housing the rollers being arranged to hold l lll/'1thv a View toward maintaining a por-V 4o e .that the pawl will engage the tooth in the the web in Yfrictional-relation with the roller V8 and facilitate the Vefficient operationv thereof. Y
In order to manually actuate the roller 8 at a predetermined time so as to successively displayY the names ofthe streets through the Vsight opening, I have mounted a bracket 11,
on the under surface of the bottom. A lever 12, is fulcrumed intermediate itsrendsI to ythe' lower' end Vof Ythe bracket .11. while a coill spring` 13, has its respective ends con` lnected to one .end of the .lever 121andv to 'the bottom of .the housing Vfor a purpose thatwill presently appear.y .A .rod 14, has. vits lower end Apivotally connected tothe .op-
able fastening device 17, to the upper end of the rodllf while a pawl 18,'is also vpivtrained about'zan idler 22, and run to a suitotally connected to the upper end ofthe rod von 4the side opposite to that upon which the arm 1s arranged while connection is maintainedthrough the fastening device 17. `A
ratchet wheel 19, is rigidly. mounted on .theV shaft adjacent the roller 8 while ythe pawlf 'is' yieldingly Vheld in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel by means of az spring 20, connected to the rod 14. A cable.
21, `is connected to the end of .the lever 12 to which the .spring 13 is connected and is able lpoint on the` car (not shown) :where it can be conveniently pulled by the conductor to move the lever.l2 againstr the tension of..
the spring and consequently raise. the; rod -sol ratchetwheelA above .the one l'in which it is i positioned whereuponV the cableyis released and the tensionfofithe spring 13y consequently movesthe ratchet wheel as wellas the shaft and roller 8 so as to mo-vge the web v and'display the next street thereon through Vthe sight opening.` e 1'* For the purpose of controlling themove- .ment of'theoperating rollerv Sso astoprevent the. roller from moving.i beyonda pr`e V .f determined distance and thereby insuring an effective voperation of the indicating web I have connected a support 23, to the housing while van arm24, is pivotally connected tfOjV "the gouter end thereof. Azroller 25,"is rol r tatably mountedron the outer, end yofthe arm 24and is yieldably held in engagement with a spur wheel 26,fcairied' by the shaft 7, Aby means of a. spring 27,. the respective endsrof which are connected to. the support ij 23 and the arm 24.] It will'l be noted that Vthere are' the samenumber of teeth on the Y wheel 26.',as `there are onv the ratchet wheel 19 so that when the ratchet wheel is moved the distance of one tooth by the ratchet it .wil'l'fbe preventedv from moving farther by the roller 25 which is 'yieldably held in engagement withthe teeth on the spur wheel. This engagement of the roller' 25 with the tooth. of the wheelr26 however, isnotsuff.-v
ciently strong to prevent 'thev roller being moved a predetermined distance by the operating means therefor. A
The. operation of he imma@ mtyte reviewed as followsz-V Assuming that the car.in wliich the `de- I Vice is. mountedhas started on its route'and'" thatithe major portion ofthe .web is'wound aboutthe roller 4 the vconductor will'pull the'cable againstthe tension of the spring'v 13 androck the lever 12 which moves the be'...engage' dv on thet'o'cth abovethe onei'n` i which it is engaged whereuponfthe'cable' is released :andthe spring 13 exerts its tension and moves theroddownwardly whichrai'ses thepawl to partially rotate the shaft 7 i VIn- Y asmuch as the roller .8 is carried by this shaft Zand frictionally associated with the web. v6
the web will be moveda slightdistance so as to displaythe'properstreet through the sightropening `2 and thus; indicate .to the passengers within the car the name of the s treetfat lwhich the car willmalre its next stop, ifnecess'ary. The-spring roller 5 will automatically wind. theV web as the" slack oc-` curs in the web. between theroller and the roller .8. The spring pressed roller 25 engaged in thes'pur wheel 26fallows the shaft to move only .ja` predetermineddistante. Soas tdnsurethe efficient Operatieflof the indicating web."V V As is readily apparent the,`
device can beY subsequently actuated ,inV a similar manner'to successively ldisplay .the
`Vnames: of the streets inftrhe ordery inlvwhich they areapproachedjbythe car. .if e Y Sincemany hangescould'be madei-n the ,aboveV construction and many apparently widely vdifferent embodimentsjof this invention. could' be madewithoutdepartingfrom the scope Y. thereof, it is intendedv that' all matter contained 'inV thefabove description Yor shown in 'the"accompanying drawings shall. be .interpreted e asV illustrative. 'and not ina limiting sense'. vIt Yisfalso-to be underfstood that the.language usedi'nfthe following Claim ieintendedto cover! all of theY generic Y and 4ffspeeific featureswflthe inven'- tionfherein". describedl and all ys t at eme'nts" of thescope ofthe invention,'which, as'a matter oflanguage, might. be said tov fall 'there Having thus described invention, .what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Let- K tersPatentpis; ,v l, Y, An indicator .of the--typ'e'describedmcomp'rising ahousing having anopeningltherein, a Web,.rollers in .thehousmgfor carry.;
ing the web, a large rollerrradjacent the open-V ing for receiving the web intermediate the afore mentioned rollers, idler rollers bracketed to the housing above and below the opening and to each side thereof and in line with the upper and lower edges for disposition forward ofl and bearing against the large roller whereby to smooth out and facilitate movement of the web thereover, a spur wheel on the larger roller, a vertically disposed and vertically movable shaft extending into the housing, an arcuate pawl pivotedgto the shaft and engagingthe spur Y wheel to advance the large roller, and a leaf spring pivoted to the shaft below and in line with the pvot point of the pawl and having a curvature opposite to the curvature of the pawl whereby to positively press the pawl at all times although exerting a smooth and minimum frictional contact upon the pawl for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I aiiX my signature hereto.
