UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2'7, 1920.
Application filed February 21, 1919. Serial No. 278,551.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JENS WILLIAM ZEGI- mus ELLINo, a subject of the King of Norway, of Christiania, in the Kingdom of Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arrangements for Drying Solid Liquid-Containing Bodies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a art of this specification.
he present invention relates to an arrangement for drying solid liquid-containing bodies such as fish, fruits, vegetables, etc., and the object of the invention is to provide an arrangement for carrying out this kind of drying process without exposing the drying products to high temperatures or stron currents of drying air.
This is obtained according to the present invention by separating the heating medium from the drying goods by means of a thin flexible wall and keeping the heating medium at a higher pressure than the drying goods in such a manner that the said thin flexible wall is pressed against the drying goods.
According to a suitable form of the invention the medium is conducted into bags of flexible material, which communicate at one end with the heating chamber or channel, while with their two other ends they pro- 'ject into the drying c'hamberbetween the dryin goods.
On the drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view on the line A, B of Fig. 2 illustrating a practical embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectionon the line C, D of Fig. 1.
1 is the heating vessel which is supplied with steam through inlet tube 2 and is provided with an outlet 4 for condensed steam. This vessel 1 is covered with a hood 6 which is mounted gastight on the part 1, and the interior of which communicates with an outlet 3, which may be connected to a suction device or the like. 1
Bags 5 of flexible material are arranged in rows inside hood 6 with the bottom up and their openings secured between rods or ribs 9 covering the top opening of steam chamber 1. The bags 5 may be maintained in their upright position by means of wire frames 7 8 or the like.
The material to be dried is indicated by number 10 and is placed between the flexible bags 5. When steam pressure is put on chamber 1 the flexible bags extend and press against the material to be dried so that the heat is transmitted directly through the flexible walls to the drying goods.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus for drying solid materials a chamber supplied with heating medium and a chamber containin the material to be dried, the pressure 1n said last chamber being lower than the pressure'in the heating chamberand bags of flexible material extending into the dryin chamber and communicating with the heating chamber said bags being spaced apart to give room for the goods to be placed between them. 7
2. In an apparatus for drying solid materials a chambersupplied with heating medium and a chamber containing the material to be dried, the pressure in said last chamber being lower than the pressure in the heating chamber a row of bags of flexible material extending with their bottom up into the drying chamber and having their openings in communication with the heating chamber.
3. In apparatus for drying solid mate-- rials, a heating chamber supplied with a heating medium, and a drying chamber for .containing the material to be dried, in
which the pressure is lower than in the first chamber, flexible bags extending upward from the heating chamber into the drying chamber, and distending and supporting elements for the bags.
4:. In apparatus for drying solid materials, a heating chamber supplied with a heating medium, a drying chamber formed Bil -i i E'pgrgv j w 2 CUP? 1,347,501
