Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 17, 1918. Serial No. 258,503.

Be it-known thatI, DOUGLAS DOBBINS, a citizen of the United States, and a'resident of Shelbyville, countyof Shelby, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Rotary Compressed-Air Motor;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
This inventionrelates torotary motors or engines in which compressed air is employed for operating the same. The prime feature of the invention is the provision of a pair of motors having rotating pistons, which rotating parts are connected together by means of a hub so that said hub will be driven by both motors.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of an intake port for each motor, and so arranged that the propelling medium will be discharged into the pockets of the opposed rotating members at different intervals, one immediately following the other so that a continuous driving force will be maintained on the hub, driven by the motors.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of valves for cooperation with the intake ports of the motor which automatically open and close.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of a lining between the rotating portions of the motors and the casing thereof, which prevent leakage of the propelling medium and reduce the wear between these parts.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the accompanying specifications.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application Figure 1 is an end elevation of the motor. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the motor as seen 011 line 2-2 F ig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the motor as seen on line 33 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view as seen on line 4-4 Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 and 2 indicate the motors which are formed of casings 3 and rotating pistons 41, said pistons having pockets 5 arranged around their periphery, into whlch the propellingmedium is discharged for driving the pistons.

Each pocket is substantially in the shape of a reverse L, the end wall 6 extending radially from the axial center of the piston 4, while the bottom wall 7 of said pocket is arranged tangentially to the axis of the pis ton and is bowed outwardly from end to end thereof, one end of the bottom wall terminating at theend wall 6, while the opposite end terminates'at the periphery of the piston, thus inclining the bottom wall.
Positioned between the motors l and 2 is a connecting hub 8, from which belts or other devices are driven, said hub being attached to the piston of the two motors by means of bolts 9, or in any suitable manner, or if desired a shaft 10 may be attached to the pistons and hub for driving purposes, each motor being provided with ball-bearings 11 so as to reduce friction to the minimum. It will likewise be understood that the piston and hub may be rotatably mounted upon the shaft. and the shaft held stationary. The propelling medium, which is preferably compressed air, enters the pockets 5 through intake ports 12 and 13 in the motors 1 and 2 respectively, said intake ports being so arranged with, respect to each other that when one of the intake ports is in registration with one of the pockets the other i11- take port of the opposite engine will be out of registration with the pocket of its motor, and by arranging the intake ports in this manner, and providing a plurality of pockets around the periphery of each piston, a continuous driving force will be provided for the hub, from the fact that immediately after one pocket has passed out of registration with its corresponding in take port, a pocket of the other motor will be brought into registration with its respective intake port. The passage of the air through the intake ports is controlled by means of valves let, said valves being in the nature of flap valves, and being pivoted at one end, they will swing open as soon as a pocket comes into registration with the intake port and will then close when the opposite end of the pocket is reached. These are preferably constructed of leather or similar pliable material so that they will ride over the parts of the piston without causing undue wear thereon, and by virture of curving In order to reduce the wear between the" piston 5 and other parts of the motors, a lining 3 and the ends of the pistons 4, said lining, in additionto preventing undue wear betweenthese parts, serving as a sealing means to prevent-the escape of the propelling medium around the pistons.
The invention claimed is:
1. A rotary motor including in combination two housingsfeach having a rotary member therein, a single means on which said housings are centrally mounted and spaced apart, and a driven member surrounding said mounting means between said 16 is introduced between the casings housings, and forming a portion of the adjacent sides of each and at each side adjacent and secured directly to the rotary Y member'ofrthe'motors' respectively, substantially as set forth.
