UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THURE A. JOHNSON, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
HOLDER FOR SHELVES.
in holders for shelves such as ironing boardsand the like and the principal object thereof is to provide a convenient means which can be secured to a supporting base such as the top of a table or to a wall and which will serve properly to support the end of the shelf or ironing board so that the mainpor- I tion or body thereof may project beyond the supporting means.
More specifically the object of the invention is to provide a convenient holder for ironing boards which may be clamped to the top of an ordinary kitchen table and which will support the ironing board at such a distance above'the table as to be conveniently in reach of the user.
In such case the space between the ironing board and the table enables the work to be properly manipulated about the ironing'board while all portions of the work except that part lying upon the ironing board are supported by the table itself.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ironing board support of the character specified in which the supporting means may be conveniently folded into small compass.
A further ob ect of the invention is to provide an ironing board and an ironing board support which may be conveniently dismantled and the holder for the ironing board folded up into sufliciently compact form to be inserted into a travelers trunk.
Further objects and features of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawing and will be pointed out in the annexed claims. s
A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the top and legs of a table with an ironing board and ironing board holder embodying my invention supported thereupon,
Fig. 2 is a plan View on a smaller scale Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 28, 1919. Serial No. 320,478.
of a preferred form of ironing board, the illustration being of a small size adapted to be packed within a trunk,
3 is a side elevation of one of the preferred forms of holders illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the supporting means for the ironing board or shelf in folded position,
Fig. dis a plan view of the ironing board holder showing the support in extended position adapted to support the ironing board,
Fig. 5 is a'detail view on a larger scale showing a portion of the table top in section with the ironing board holder clamped thereto and the supporting means in. operative position, and,
Fig. (3 is a vertical sectional view of the bottom portion of one of the legs of the ironing board holder stand and the table top showing a different form of locking means for securing the stand to the table top.
The invention is disclosed herein as applied to the top 1, of a usual form of kitchen table but it will be understood that the holder may be secured to any suitable base or wall from which it is desired to supportv which desirably is secured to the top of said legs. The cross piece 4 may be broader than the width of the legs to present an overhanging extension 5 adapted to give a wider area for engaging the' top of the shelf or ironing board. A jointed supporting member of greater length than the distance between said legs is preferably pivotally secured to one of said legs.
As illustrated herein the supporting member comprises a board or plate 6 which is secured to the leg 3 by one or preferably a pair of hinges 7 The free end of the member 6 is secured by a hinge 8 to another board or plate 9 of equal width. The length of the members 6 and 9 is such that when folded together they will fit between the legs 2, 3 of the stand thereby making a recesses 14 "and at-right ;angles thereto.
6, 9 are in the extended position illustrated in Fig. 1 the lower face of the ironing board or shelf rests upon the upper edges of'said supporting members while the lower edges of the supporting members rest upon the top of the table. V
The ironing board or shelf therefore is supported from beneath near one :end while its more extreme end portion is held down by the cross piece: 4.- By reason of this constructionthe lever-portion of the ironing board is allowed to projectbeyond the apex formed by the membersG and 9 so that the spacebeneath said ironingboard or shelf Any suitable means maybe provided forv locking the supporting members in extended or collapsed position; As illustrated herein ahook-10 is pivotally connected to the leg2 and is adapted to engage any one of a series of eyes 11 12 projecting from the side of the board9 so thata greater or lessfree Any suitable means may be provided for securing thelegs of thestand to a table top or. other base. In the preferredembodimentdisclosedherein the legs are provided with transverse slots 14; of sufficient width to receive theedge-of the table top, suitable fastening means being provided for clamping the 7 legs uponthe tabletop.
As illustrated in Fig. 3' the clamping means comprise screws 15 seated in the lower-portion 16 0f the legs beneath the slot 14. In Fig. 5 a fastening meansis illustrated' comprising a follower 17 having a pivotally mounted cam'lS secured to theside of said legs, the cam-lSjbeing provided with a lever-19 bymeans of which it maybe oscillated upon its pivot and caused to force the followerinto clamping engagement with the table top 1.- In the construction illustrated in; Fig.5 the lower end of the legs 2, 3' are provided with slots 20'located just below th; wedge shaped member 21seated inthis slot serves when driven in to clamp the leg 2 firmly upon the edge of the table while second wedge 22 extending-through anaperture 23 inthe wedge121 serves-when driven- 1n to perform the double functlon of driving the wedge 21 tightly in place'andalso looking the leg 2 against the edge of the table leg.
Various other means may be provided for securing the legs of the stand to the table or other supporting. base.
It will be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is illus-V may be provided for securing the stand either to a horizontal edge such as a table or vertical wall, etc; A desirable form of shelf oriron-ingboardiwhich may be employed in connection with'my' invention comprises a body: portion 24 having a rounded end'25 preferably conforming in contour to. the usual icoat 1' collar merging into a broadened central l portion" 26: so that the body of the board conformssubstantially to the form of a skirt, and an end portion 27, the edges of which are parallel andadapted to be insert- I ed- -b'eneath the: crosspiece Y The device-may be of any convenientsize such forexample as that requ-ired to support the usual ironing board or the device may be c of suificientlysmall size to beconveniently packed away. in a trunk together with a smallerironing board for :travelers use. An ironing. board holder of this kind may conveniently be used by the occupants of flats or roomsin which there is a restricted space since the-ironing board can be quickly re-' moved and the supportingv means collapsed and-packed :away in a. small closet or trunk.
Various otheruses of'the invention may of;course1be-'ma.de within the meaning and scope of the following Clitll'IlS- Having thus described myinvention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. 'A h'older forhshelvesand the like, comprising a stand; means I pivotally; secured thereto adapted to support .a shelf from :beneath and meanson said stand positioned toengage the shelf from above and hold the samedown upon the; supporting means.
