JAMES J. GORMAN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAINT-BRUSHES.
Specification forming partlof Letters Patent No. 134,*745, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. GORMAN, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Painters Brush 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification. t
Figure 1 is a perspective, showing the bristles and their fastening detached from the stock. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The nature of my invention relates to a new and useful improvement in painters brushes,
wherein the bristles are held together by sewing, dipping the ends into glue, wax, &c., or any other convenient means, and may be detached from the stock and replaced by new ones, thereby saving the expense of the stock and fastening. It consists in securing the detachable plate B to the stock by means of a flanged edge of the same fitting a transverse groove, a, and a single clamping-screw, b.
In construction my invention is as follows: A is the stock; B B', two metallic plates, one of which may be permanently fastened to the stock. A groove, a, isformed in the stock to receive the-flange b of plate B. O is a collection of bristles partaking the usual form of a painters brush, and sewed together through the cloth binding c c, extending on both sides. A small strip of leather, C', is inserted in the center of the bunch of bristles to give the structure body. The plates B and B are held together by means of screw b passing freely through one of the plates and screwed into the other, or the screw may be provided with a nut.
The operation of my invention becomes obvious. When the bristles are worn down so that they will not take the required amount of paint the screw b is withdrawn, wh-ich releases the bristles by permitting the removal of plate B. A new bunch of bristles, fastened together and formed as above described, may. then be inserted, the cap-plate B replaced, and the screw b tightened, holding the entire structure firmly together.
The core c not only serves to keep the brush in shape, but it affords a solid projection at the base of the brush, in front of which the edges b of the clamping-:plates B B may gripe the bristles, as shown in the drawing, so ,that when in position the brush will'be securely held. The groovea affords a secure seat for the rear or flanged edge of 4the plate B,whereby, when in position, said plate will be rigidly held by a single clamp-screw, b.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
l. A brush constructed separate from its stock, as follows, to wit: The bristles C, properly arranged around a core-piece, c', of leather or other suitable material, Wrapped by a binding-strip, c, andthe whole secured by threads sewed through from side to side, substantially as set forth. t
2. rlhe combination of a stock, A, provided with a stationary clampplate, B', a clampscrew, b', and a transverse groove, a, with a detachable clamp plate, B, fitted to seat in said groove, and be secured by said screw, for the purpose set forth.
JAMES J. GOBMAN.
