Description
Patented July 20, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER C. SCHAEFER, 0E DENVER, COLORADO.
AUTO-PORCH BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1920.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known Vthat l, PETER C. SCHAEFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in thecounty of Denver and State of Colorado, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auto-Porch Beds, of which the'following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
-This invention relates to an auto-porch.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an apparatus constructed in accordance with the present invention, shown particularly in a rolled condition.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the apparatus.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of the apparatus.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the apparatus, showing one end thereof in section.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the support or angle iron, constituting a part of the bed-frame. The upper portion 2 of this support is provided with apertures 3 and 4, for the purpose hereinafter described.
The body 5 of the bed is formed of a heavy canvas, and preferably twelve heavy strips of jute webbing 6 is secured to the under face of the canvas, or body 5, and each strip, at the end contiguous to the support 1, is extended beyond the end of the canvas 5 and' bent around doubled upon the canvas, at 6, Fig. 2, and this doubled portion 6a is continued and its eXtreme end 6b is laid between the doubled portion 6a of the webbing and the body or canvas 5. This doubling of the end of the webbing 6 produces a loop 7, in which loop is a D metal loop 8. This doubled portion of each of the strips 6 of webbing is attached, at 9, for holding the same to the body, `or canvas 5, but to re- Y inforce the loop 7, l preferably pass a leather strip 10 through a D loop 8 and rivet the same, at 11, upon the looped end of .the strip, or webbing 6. A chain 12 is fastened at one end to the D loop 8, and its other end isrdetachably fastened to the inner end of the helical spring 13; the outer end of the helical spring 13 is fastened in the aperture 3 of the support 1. By placing new links of chain 12 in the inner end ofthe spring 13, the tautness of the bed body can be adjusted.
A flap 14 ofcanvas is secured, at 15,*'to the top of the canvas, or body 5, near the end carrying the loops, in which the D loops 8 are positioned, and the'outer end of the flap 14 is provided with tie strings 1G, which strings are threaded through apertures 4 for fastening the flap 14 to the support 1, and thereby covering the loops formed out of one end of thestrips of webbing, the D loops, chains and springs, to prevent the user of the bed from coming in contact with these attachments.
The opposite end of the body, or canvas 5, from that to which the D loops, chains and springs are attached, is folded over, as at 17, and stitched at 18, producing a loop or Compartment 19, in which isa flat bar 20; this end of the bed body is apertured, as at 21, throughwhich a-bolt may be passed for securing the end to the frame of the bed not shown. If the bed should sag, or need stretching, all that one has to do is to remove the fastening means 21 and roll up this end containing the flat bar 2() and then again fasten this end with bar 20 to the support or bed frame.
While l have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, during the extensive manufacture of the same and l, therefore, reserve the right to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What l claim is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a body having strips attached longitudinally thereto, said body provided at one vend with a pocket, a bar in said pocket, said body provided at its other end with said strips extending beyond the end and formed into loops, metal loops in said first-mentioned loops, chains attached to said metal loops, and springs detachably attached to the chains.
2. In' an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a body comprising a sheet of canvas, strips of webbing attached to one side of said canvas, said strips extendin beyond one end of the canvas and forme into loops, fastening means in said loops for attaching the body to a support, the opposite end of the body to-that provided With loops being folded over and the strips also folded over producing a pocket, aY
flat bar in said pocket, and said body and bar provided with apertures for receiving means for attaching said pocketed end and bar to a support.
In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a'body formed of a sheet and a plurality of parallel strips attached thereto, said strips at one end of the body foldedover, parallel portions of the strips resting on one side of the body, and the end of the strip folded against the body and under the parallel portions producing a loop, means fastening the parallel folded portions to the body, a metal loop in said first-mentioned loop, a reinforcing strip extending through said metal loop and around the first-mentioned' loop, means securing the reinforcing strip to the first-mentioned strip and the body, and fastening means in the first-mentioned loop for attaching the body to a support.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a body formed from a sheet of material and provided with a plurality of, longitudinally-extending strips, each of said strips .bent or looped around one end of the sheet and folded parallel and upon one side of the sheet, and the inner portion of the fold of the strip being placed between the folded portions of the strip and the sheet, the folded portions of the strip producing a loop, a reinforcing strip placed over the looped portion of the strip, rivets extending through the reinforcing strip, folded portions of the first-mentioned strip and a portion of the sheet, fastening all of said portions securely together, and attaching Ameans in the loop constituted by the folded over portions of the strip, substantially as shown and described. A
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
PETER C. SCHAEFER.
