Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR PARENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millers Falls, in the county of Franklin, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Button-Clipper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has for its object to provide a machine wherein a knife will be reciprocated so that buttons, buckles, hooks and eyes and other articles may be cut from articles of clothing, partlcuiarly buttons. A devlce of this kind is particularly adapted for use in paper mills where old cloth and clothing is prepared for the manufacture of paper. At the present time in'paper factories, buttons and the like are cut from old clothing and pieces of cloth by hand. The operation necessarily having to be a quick one, it has been found that the workmen not button but a. considerable amount of the adjacent cloth. Therefore, it is another object of the invention to prov de a pair of jaws, one of said jaws being spring actuated and between which jaws the securing thread of a button may be passed so that a rapidly reciprocating knife Wlll shear or cut the button from the cloth, the button falling on the opposite side of the machine from that on which the cloth is located.
Viith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings,the numeral 1 designates a casing, which casing is preferably triangular shaped and has secured at its upper end between the inclined wall 2,
a longitudinally disposed bar 3. The outer end of the bar 3 is provided with an upwardly extending stationary jaw member l, against which jaw member the thread 5 which secures the button 6 to the cloth 7 is adapted to be clamped by means of a spring held slidable clamping jaw 8. Clamping jaw 8 is formed from two members 9, which are held together by means of screws 10. One edge of the clamping jaw 8 is provided with a slot 11, which slotis formed from registering recesses 12 in the inner faces of the members 9. Slot 11 receives the upper end of the knife 13 when the same is reciprocated by means of the pitman 14, said knife being slidably mounted in a vertically disposed rectangular shaped aperture 15 in the bar 3. Aperture 15 has in communication therewith a slot 16 in the inner face of the jaw 4, said slot 16 forming a recess for the reception of the knife 13 when said knife is in its uppermost position during a button clipping operation.
Slidable jaw S is held in engagement with the thread 5 by means of a coiled spring 17 one end of which is connected to a stationary hook 18, the other end of which is ad justably connected to the rear end 19 of the horizontal portion of the slidable jaw 8, there being adjusting means 20 whereby the tension of the spring 17 may be adjusted. Spring 17 -is disposed in a recess 21 of the slidable jaw 8, which recess is formed by registering recesses 22 in the adjacent faces of the members 9. The pitman 141 may be operated by any suitable means of power, for instance an electric motor or if so desired to abelt 23 as shown in the drawings.
The operation is as follows. The operator passes the button between the jaws and into the position as shown in Fig. 2 with said button disposed in the recesses 24 of the jaws 4; and 8. It will be seen that the thread 6 is disposed between the jaws and that the spring 17 will cause the button to be held in position. The operator may pass a button and its thread into position by manually moving the slidable jaw 8 or if so desired by simply forcing the thread in between the jaws. The thread being clamped between the jaws it will be seen that as the knife 13 is reciprocated into the recesses ofthe jaws 4 and 8 that the curved edge 13 of theknife will sever the thread from the cloth 7. By so mounting the knife and having the same reciprocate in recesses in the jaws 41- and 8, it will be seen that the possibility of the operator becoming cut by the knife is reduced to a minimum. The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A button clipper comprising a base, said base being provided with an upstanding jaw at one of its edges,'a horizontal guide adjacent said upstanding jaw, a spring actuated slidable jaw mounted on said horizontal guide and adapted to clamp a thread between the jaws, said jaws having recesses in their adjacent faces, one of said recesses merging into a knife guide, a vertically disposed reciprocating knife disposed in said guide and recesses and means for reciprocating said knife.
2. A button clipper comprising a base, said base being provided with a vertically disposed stationaryjaw, a spring actuated jaw slidably mounted on a horizontal guide,
