IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR HOLDING HOGS IN VETERINARY OPERATIONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,707, dated January 7, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that We, ALEXANDER M. SCOTT and THOMAS WILSON, of Olearmont, Nodaway county, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Hog-Stock, of which the following is a specification:

N atnre and Objects of the Invention.

This is an improved devicefor securely holding a hog for any veterinary operation, such as castration, spaying, ringing.

General Description.

Figure l is a perspective view of our hog stock in condition to receive the hog. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same hog-stockin condition for castrating or spaying the hog.

Our device consists, primarily, of a rectangular oblong box or pen for a hog, of which one end (containing the yoke) and one side, with movable floor attached thereto, arehin ged at bottom to the stationary portions of the hog-pen. The stationary portions consist, essentially, of a base, A, from which rise three posts, B O D,to which are attached the stationary side E and grated top F. The rear end consists of a door, Gr, capable of being slid in guides, so as to be lifted for the admission of the hog, and then closed. The front end H and left side I of the box; together with its floor J, are fast to each other, and are hinged or pivoted at K K to the base A, and are secured in their erect position for confining the hog by a pin, L, as in Fig. 1. On withdrawing the pin L the movable member or crib II I J may be let down, so as to assume the open or prostrate condition seen in Fig. 2. The front H contains a notched board, M, which is fixed in its lower part, and another notched board, N, capable of being slid up or down, and secured by pin 0, so as to imprison the hog by the neck in the usual manner of securing hogs in hog-stocks. A door, P, hinged to the lower edge of side T, at Q, and having its free edge secured by pin It, enables the liberation of the castrated hog.

The hog being secured as above, and it bein g desired to castrate him, the crib is let down, as in Fig. 2, and, the hind legs of the hog being secured by a rope or otherwise, the operation is easily and quickly performed without danger, or needless pain or mutilation.
