HOLDER FOR MOTOR-VEHICLES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HARLON O. GIBSON and ELMER F. AMEs, citizens of the United States, residing at Wayland, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to holders for motor vehicles and has for its object to provide a device of this character that prevents movement of a Vehicle when applying in either direction, regardless of the action of the vehicle brake.
Another object is the provision of a supplemental holding drum arranged to be attached to the brake drum of the vehicle and to rotate therewith. v
Another object is the provision of a device of this character that does not interfere with the operation of the brake and one in which the brake drum cooperates with the holding mechanism.
WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan and sectional view of the vehicle holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation and sectional view of the holding mechanism, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 83 of Fig. 2 showing the position of the holding drum on the conventional brake drum.
Referring to the drawings 5 designates an axle housing, and brake drum 6 of conventional form intended to operate in the usual manner to retard or stop the movement of a vehicle.
It has been found however that the brake drums of motor vehicles have a tendency to slip when the vehicle is positioned on an incline. In order to overcome this dangerous condition a supplemental holding device is provided and consists of a drum 7 including an annular flange 8 and a central opening 9, the flange 8 being provided with a series of openings 10 located centrally of the flange. . Connected to the rear axle housing 5 and projecting from one edge thereof, is a segmental bracket 12 having a segmental flange 13 to the ends of which a supporting member 1-1 is connected. An opening 15 is provided in the segmental flange 13 and registers with an opening 16 provided in the intermediate portion of the supporting member 14. Secured to the intermediate portion of the supporting member 14 and extending outwardly therefrom is a fulcrum member 17, having a furcation 18 in its free end in which an operating lever 19 is pivoted. Slidably disposed in the registering openings 15 and 16 is a dog 20 having a stop collar 21 and a retracting spring 22 disposed thereon between the segmental flange 13 and the supporting member 14, the stop collar 21 limiting the retracting movement of the dog caused by the operation of the spring. One end of the dog 20 includes a head 28 adapted to be engaged by the end 2a of the operating lever 19, the end 25 of the lever being connected to a foot pedal extending through the floor of the vehicle by means of a cable 26. The other end of the dog is intended to be disposed in one of the openings 10 of the holding drum.
In operation, when it is desired to emciently hold a vehicle on an incline, the foot pedal is depressed by the driver and secured in said position. This causes the cable 26 to rock the operating lever 19 and force the dog 20 through the adjacent opening in the brake drum and into engagement with the brake drum, thereby performing two locking operations, which securely locks the wheel against movement in any direction. By positioning the holding drum 9 in annular spaced relation to the flange of the brake drum 6, the flange of the brake drum serves as a stop to limit the movement of the dog into the drum in addition to permitting the dog to frictionally engage said flange. In view of the fact that the holding drum is secured to and thereby forms a part of the brake mechanism, this device will be found especially useful should the brake become inoperative in a case of emergency. Furthermore, by providing a series of openings inflthe flange of the holding drum, a rigid holding operation is performed in view of the fact that the dog-snugly engages in the opening.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel holdingtion.
lVhat is claimed is 1. The combination with a vehicle rear axle housing and brake drum, of a supplemental holding drum carried by the brake drum, said holding drum having a series of openings in its periphery, a bracket secured to the rear axle housing and overlying the supplemental drum, a dog slidably supported by said bracket over the periphery of the supplemental drum and manually operable means for moving said dog into an adjacent opening of the series to prevent movement of said drums.
2. The combination With a vehicle rear axle housing and brake drum, of a supple mental holding drum carried by and partially surrounding the brake drum, said holding drum having a series of openings in its periphery, a bracket projecting from the rear axle housing and overlying the periphery of the supplemental drum, a dog slidably supported by said bracket and manually operable means for moving said dog into an adjacent opening of the series to preventmovement of said drums, said holding drum being disposed in annular spaced relation to the brake drum.
3. The combination with a vehicle rear axle housing and brake drum, of a supplemental holding drum carried by the brake drum, said holding drum being larger in circumference than the brake drum and surrounding the periphery thereof, said holding drum having a series-of openings in its periphery, a bracket projecting from the rear axle housing and overlying the periphery of the supplemental drum, a dog slidably supported by said bracket and manually operable means for moving saiddog into an adjacent opening of the" series to prevent movement of said drums, said holding drum being disposed in annular spaced relation to the brake drum, said brake drum being arranged to. limit movement of said dog into the holding drum. 7
