UNITED STATES :PATENT QFFI'QFE.:Y
WILLIAM A. sNYnER, or MAZOMANIE, wisconsin RAZOR-GUARD.
speeieeatien of Letters Patent. Patented July 20,1920.
i Applicatieil filed october 31, 1919. .serial No. 334,811.
To all whom t may concern? Be it known that I, VVILLIAMA. SNYDER, a
vcitizen of the United States, residing at Mazomanie, in the county of Dane and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor-Guards, of which the following is'a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a razor guard' and has vfor its principal object the provision `of a device adapted to Abe applied to the blade of an ordinary razor for converting 'the same into a safety razor.
Another object resides in the construction of the guard in such a manner that" it may be swung to either side of the blade. y
Further objects reside in the provision of novel means for securing the guard on to the blade and for holding the guard in its adjusted position on either side of the'blade.
' With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts Y 5 5 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing A indicatesy a razor blade of usual construction and B' the guard adapted to be connected to the blade.
The guard B comprises a plate 1 having thelower edge offset as indicated at 2 and said offset portion is providedwith a pluralityfof longitudinallyv spaced depending tongues 3. As indicated more particularly in Fig. 4. of the drawings the ldepending tongues 3 extend Vat a slight angle so that the lower ends thereof will be in substar spring member is connected .to the plate1 and comprises an upper arm'4'anda lower arm 5 extending parallel .therewith andv in spaced relation as more clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. The arm 4 is secured to the .plate 1 by 'means ofrivets 6 or other suitable fastening means. As shown the Varm4 of the spring member 'extends lparallel with the plate 1 whereas the arm 5 is spaced therefrom yand extends adjacentthe lower ends of the tongues 3. As illustrated in the drawings the razor blade A will be received between the lower arm l5 of the spring member and the depending Ytongues 3. The offset portion 2 will engage over vthe top edge of the blade as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. l
The plate 1 'is provided on'its upper edge with the eyes or loops 7 A rod 8 extends through the sleeves or eyes 7 and by this construction the plate 1 is pivotally mounted uponthe rod. The rod 8 has a right angle extension 9 on one end thereof and the end 'of the right angle extension l9 is formed with Ythe 'rod or extension 10 which extends par.
allel with the rodvS. p
A plate 11 is provided on the upper edge with the sleeves or eyes 12 and the extension or rod 10 is adapted to pass through the eyes or sleeves whereby the plate 11 is pivotally connectedon the Lrod. The lower end of the plate 11 is vertically slit from the lower edge thereof to form aV plurality of teeth 13. These teeth will be twisted at substantially right anglesy as more clearly` set forth inF ig. 4 of the drawings and the` lower edge of the teeth will be rounded for] la purpose to be later described.
A `plate 14 is received on the rods 8 and '10, adjacent the right 'angle extension 9, and this 'plate is provided 'with a threaded open- 10 and is provided with an opening for a purpose to be later described. i
A washer 16 is received on each ofthe ling for a purpose to be later described. A A.plate 15 is also mounted upon the rods 8 and rods 8 and 10 and each washer is provided l with a downwardly extending tongue 17 provided with a notch in the lower end thereof. The notch in the .tongue ofthe washervcarried on the rod 8 isadapted to engage the upper edge of the plate 1 and the notch in the tongue of the washer .carvried on the rod 10 is adapted to eng-age the upper edge of the plate 11. A spacing plate 1`8is adapted to befreceived on lthe'rods 8 and10 between the plate 15 and washers 16. A plate 19 is carried on the oppositeends loo ofthe rods '8 and 10 and corresponds lto the l vplate 14. A plate l2() is also carried upon the rods and' cor-respond to the `plate 15. Each ofthe plates 19 and 2 0 is provided with an opening for a purpose to be later described.
-Washers 21 are received on each of the rods 8 and 10, between the plates 19 and 20, and each of these washers is provided with a downwardly extending tongue-22 `provided with a notch 23 inthe lower end thereof. As shown more clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings the notch in the washer carried on the rod 8 is adapted to engage over the upper edge of the plate 1 whereas the notch in the washer carried by the rod 10 is adapted to engage over the upper edge of the plate 11. gpacing plates 24 are carried upon the rods 8 and 10 between theplate 19 and washers 21; Each of these spacing plates 24 are provided with openings in alinement with the openings formed in the plates 19 and 2U.
A rod 25 is adapted to extend through the plates 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, and 24 and said rod Vis provided on one ond with a right angle extension 26, forming a handle, and the opposite end is screw-threaded as indicated at '27. The end 27 of course passes through the threaded openings in the plates 14, 15, and 18'and has engagement with the threads in the opening in the plate 14.
From the above detailed description it is thought that the operation as well as the advantages of my guard will be clearly understood. When in use the parts will be assembled in the manner shown and the razor blade A will be received between lthe downwardly extending tongues 3 and thearin 5 ofthe spring-member. This spring member will securely hold the blade in position and the offset portion 2, engaging the upper edge of the blade, will properly space the blade. The teeth 13 will be brought adjacentthe blade as shown more particularly inFig. 4 of the drawings and when the parts are swung into this position the rod 25 will be rotated so that all of the plates will be drawn into rictional contact and securely hold the parts in position. li it-is desired to swing the plate 11 with the teeth 13, to the opposite side oi the blade the rod 25 is rotated so as to loosen the frictioiial engagement of the plates 14, 15, 1S, 19, 20, and 24, with the washers 16 and 21. lVhen this had been done the plate 11 with the teeth 13 may be swung as indicated by the dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings and until the teeth 13 engage or lie approximate the opposite face of the blade. When in the proper position the rod 25 will beagain adjusted to hold the parts in position. It will be noted that the upper edges ofthe plates `.1 and 11 being Areceived in the notches of the washers 16 and 21 will allow said plates to swing lwiththe washers and independently of the pineal-i, i5, is, 19, 20 and 22.
Irwishto lay particular stress on the fact that when inserting the blade A in position it may be moved longitudinally of the guard and the edge will nottbe dulled.
The/foregoing description and lthe drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such'changes in construction and Having fully described my invention what Y I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettei's Patent is 1. A razor blade guard comprisinga plate, means for connecting the plate to the blade, eyes formed on the upper edge of theplate, a rod passing through the eyes', a right angle extension formed on .one end of the rod,l aV rody formed on the right angle extension and extending parallel with the Vfirst mentioned rod, a plate having eyeson the upper edge to receive the second mentioned rod, washers carried on each rod, the washers onA one rod engaging the upper "edge of the first mentioned plate, and the washersthe plate and the other arm adapted to engage the blade, and guardineans attached to said plate. t v
