The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described. i
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and constituting a part hereof,villustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description serve to explain the principles thereof.

Referring by way of example to the acdrawings, the machine is mounted upon a suitable stationary frame 1, said frame comprising a floor plate 2, and a plurality of upright frame members 3 rising therefrom, and supporting a top frame member or top plate 4. Fixed to or integral with the stationary frame plate 4 are two upwardly projecting journal blocks 5 and 6. Pivotally mounted for rocking movement upon the blocks 5 and 6 by means of pintles or trunnions 7 and 8, respectively, which pintles are journaled in the blocks 5 and 6, is a frame 9. The frame 9 comprises an inner annulus 10, located within the journal blocks 5 and 6, from which annulus project the pintles or trunnions 7 and 8. The entire structure just described is adapted to rock or oscillate in its journal bearings upon the blocks 5 and 6.
Suitable means are provided for rocking or oscillating to and fro the frame 9 ust described, and as embodied said means comprise a power shaft 20 mounted insuitable bearings 22 and in the machine frame. The shaft 20 is driven in a suitable manner, as by a variable speed pulley 21. Fixed to the shaft 20 is a crank disk 24, to which is.
pivotally connected a rod 25. The other end of the rod 52-5 1S pivotally connected by v a ball and socket joint 26 to a lug 27, carried byand extending inwardly from the ring 15.. Thus as the shaft 20 rotates, there is imparted to the frame 9 a rocking or oscillating motion about its bearings 7 and 8.
A. suitable receptacle for the plates to be grained is provided in the form of a box, to the bottom of which the plate is attached, the graining materials acting upon the surface of the plate, due to the motion of the box. In Fig. 1 of the drawings the box is shown of circular form with a flat bottom, and in Fig. 4 the box is shown of substantially rectangular form, with counterweights 29 to produce proper balance. The box 30 has the plate as fastened to the bottom thereof,.the side walls 31 of the box serving to keep the graining materials therewithin.
Suitable means are provided for supporting the box so that it will receive the rocking or oscillating motion of the frame 9, and also have rotatory motion substantially about its center, both motions being preferably simultaneous; As embodied, the box 30 has upon the bottom thereof a plate 32 adapted to rest upon the rollers 16, 17, 18 and 19, the plate 32 and the box 30 rolling around upon these rollers. At the center of the box the plate 32has a downwardly projecting portion 33, which is spherically recessed to receive and to rest upon a ball 34. The ball 34 in turn rests in a spherical recess 35 in or attached to the top plate 4 of the frame. At or near its periphery the plate 32 is provided with a downwardly extending annular flange 36, from the lower 'end of which flange extends: inwardly a holding lip or plate 37, which extends beneath the rollers of theframe 9. The rock- 'ing and the rotatory movement may be correlated; to each other in such manner as to vary and modify the combined motion to the best advantage in producing a high quality grain for printing.
The plate box may be emptied of the marbles and'slush by means of a hole closed by a suitable plug or like device.
From allitlire foregoing it will be understood that a machine has been provided realizing the objects of the invention andgthe advantages herein set forth, together with other objects and advantages; and it will be further realized that changes may be made from the specificconstructionherein shown and described without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
