Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 1, 1918. Serial No. 242,316.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FOKKO H. G. BRANDT and Gnoncn K. KRELL, subjects of the German Emperor, residing at Kansas City, 1n the county of Jackson and State of M1ssouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Stringer-Supports for Scaifolds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable stringer supports for scaffolds and the like, and our object is to produce a device of the character set forth by which stringers can be easily, quickly and reliably secured at the desired height without the use of nails or screws and without defacing or otherwise injuring the stringer or necessitating the cutting of the stringer.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel and useful features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1, is an elevational view of a part of the scaffold equipped with stringer securing devices embodying the invention, a stringer being shown in section.
Fig. 2, is an elevational view taken at right angles to that shown by Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a horizontal section taken on the line III-III of Fig. 2.
In the said drawing, 1 indicates an upright of a scaffold or the like and 2 a stringer to be secured at the desired height against said upright.
8 is an angle bracket underlying and supporting and fitting against the face of the stringer at the opposite side thereof from the upright, the lower arm of the bracket terminating in an arcuate portion 4 provided with perforated ears 5, and fitting against the upright, and to hold said bracket in such position a U-bolt 6 fits around the upri ht and extends through the perforated ears 0 and is engaged at its ends by retaining The upper arm of the bracket is provided with a pair of horizontal ears 8 through which extends a pivot pin 9 engaged by a retaining cotter pin 10, and projecting outwardly from the lower ear 8 at one side of the center thereof is a stop lug 11 for engagement by a locking arm 12 pivotally attached at 13 to the forked arm 14 of an angle arm 16 pivoted on bolt 9 between ears 8, the said angle arm being provided at its free end with a plurality of teeth 17 for embedment in the stringer 2 at the opposite side of the same from the upright 1. When the angle arm is swung to cause its teeth to engage the stringer, it is driven home to cause said teeth to be embedded in the stringer, being struck with a hammer or the like, and then the locking arm 12 is permitted to assume a vertical position adjacent stop lug 11 so that it shall be impossible for the angle arm to swing or work outward and become disengaged from the stringer. To accomplish this disengagement the locking arm must first be swung to a horizontal position above the plane of the upper side of stop lug 11, after which the angle arm can be forced outward by means of a suitable pry, until the stringer is free to be lifted or slid longitudinally from the support.
From the above description it will be apparent that the appliance embodies the fea tures of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the object of the invention, and can be changed in form, proportion, detail, construction and organization of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Vie claim:
1. The combination of an upright, an angle bracket secured to the upright, an angle arm movably carried by the bracket and adapted to hold a stringer upon the bracket and against said upright, and means movable with and independently of said angle arm for engaging the bracket to prevent disengaging action of the said arm.
2. The combination of an upright, an angle bracket secured to the upright, an angle arm movably carried by the bracket and adapted to hold a stringer upon the bracket and against said upright, a locking arm pivotally attached to the angle arm and adapted to hang downward therefrom, and a stop lug projecting from the bracket in the path of said locking arm when pendent, to prevent disengaging movement of the angle arm.
