Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 1, 1918. Serial No. 242,947.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SHELBY L. CHURCH, citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Pneumatic Tires, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a pneumatic tire, and has particular relation to improvements in the outer casing of the tire.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of novel means for repairing a casing, which has become worn, or injured by means of a blow out, or a rim out.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of means for effecting repairs on a casing, which will leave the inner side of the casing comparatively smooth, so as not to cause injury to the inner inflatable tube of the casing.
lVith the above and other objects in View, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

As is well known, when a tire becomes suddenly deflated, the rim of the wheel often cuts through, thus weakening the casing near the edge thereof, and causing a blow out. The method of repairing in such cases is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, wherein the numeral 6 refers to the casing. In case of rim out, the repair is made in the following manner :A section of the casing containing the rim cut is cut away and a corresponding section 7 cut from a used casing, and fitted into the cut away portion. A lining of shoe 8, is then fitted within the casing which extends entirely around the same. The edges of the shoe are secured to the edges of the casing, by means of a row of staples 9, on each side, said staples passing through the edge of the shoe, and on through the edges of the casing, and having their outer ends clenched over, as
shown in Fig. 2. The shoe is then secured to the IlIIl out side of the casing by means of two rows of rivets l0 and 11, one row, 10, securing the section 7, to the shoe, and the other row, 11, securing the shoe to the cas ng as illustrated in Fig. 1, and the opposite side of the shoe is secured to the corresponding side of the casing by means of a row of rivets 12. These rivets 10, 11 and 12 are passed through from the inner to the outer side, and have enlarged heads which are buried in so as'to be flush with the inner wall of the shoe, and their outer ends are clenchedon the outer side of the eas- 1ng, thus giving a smooth inner surface for the inner inflatable tube 13, so as not to tcaligse in ury or puncture to the said inner What I claim is:
The combination with a tire casing, from which an edge section has been removed, of a corresponding independent section fitted into the space left by said removed section, an inner shoe fitted within the casing opposite said substituted section, said inner shoe conforming to the contour of the casing, a row of rivets securing said shoe to the caslng on the injured side of the casing, a row of rivets securing said substituted section to said shoe, and a row of rivets securlng the opposite side of the shoe to the casing, all of said rivets being passed through from the inner to the outer side of the casing, and having enlarged heads which are flush with the inner surface of the repaired casing. and whose outer ends are clenched over to secure them against withdrawal from the casing, and a row of staples on each side, passing through the edges of the shoe and through the adjacent beads of the casing from the inner to the outer side, the outer ends of said staples being clenched over to secure them from withdrawal.
