Description

OsCAHJ CHAsH, or RUTLAND, oHIo.v
IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNING-SHEARS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N0. hdw, dated January 7, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR CHASE, of Butland, in the County of Meigs and State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Pruning- Shears, of which the following is a specication:
Figure l is a side View of my improved prunin g-shears. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
VSimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object'to furnish an improved pruning-shears which shall be so constructed as to cut the boughs with a Circular or drawing cut, so as to do its Work easier than when the cut is made in the ordinary manner, andwhich may also be used with equal advantage for cutting bolts and other articles of iron or other met-al; and it consists in the continuation of the handles, one of which is provided with a hook, guidearm, and stop, the cutter and the link slotted in'its inner end and provided with a finger or cam, said parts being constructed and operating as hereinafter more fully described.
A and B represent the handles, which are pivoted to each other near their forward ends. Upon the forward end ofthe handleAis formed a hook, al, to hook around the bough and hold it while being cut. Upon the edgeof the forward part ofthe handle A is formed a Curved arm, a2, passing around the pivoting-point of said lever, and which is designed to serve as a guide to the cutter C. The cutter C is placed upon the opposite side of the handle A and arni a2 from the handle B, and is pivoted to' the end of the said handle B, said pivot passing through the opening between the handle A and its arm a2. The rear end of the cutter C is pivoted to the end of the arm or link D, the other end of which is pivoted to the handle A, the pivoting-pin passing through a short longitudinal slot, d1, formed in the said arm, bar, or link D. Upon the lower side ofthe inner end of the bar D is formed a curved finger or cam, cl2, which bears against the stop-pin or projection a3 attached to or formed upon the handle A to give the knife C a circular or drawing movement as it makes the cut.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the leverA provided with a hook7 al, guide-arm a?, and stop or projection a3, the handle B, the cutter C, and the bar, arm, or link D, having a slot, d1, formed in its inner end and provided with a finger or cam, d2, said parts being constructed and operatin g substantially as herein shown anddescribed, and for the purposes set forth.
OSCAR CHASE.
