lie it known that l, lsaBnL Lens BAYLESS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in booking Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. T his invention relates to cooking devices and particularlv to that class known as portable folding ovens, and the principal object to provide an improved device of this class which is designed especially for use by persons doing light housekeeping, and which in actual use is placed. over a gas burner, or any other kind of heat, by means of which articles of food placed in the device may he baked, or otherwise cooked.

A further object is to provide a device of the class specified which consists of movableparts, made of sheet metal, adapted to be c: sily tolded compactly together so that it may be stored in a small space, or carried from place to place.

Another special object of the device is to provide larger or smaller cooking compartments as desired, adjustable without the use of additional parts.

Another object is to provide double sides and double top, to conserve the heat, the inner sides being removable.

vtitill another object of my invention is to provide an adjustable rack adapted to be interchangeably used in the device either in the larger or smaller compartments.

Another obiect oi this device is to provide an oven more simple in construction and operation than such cooking devices heretofore patented. comprising six princi pal pieces and with a double top, the inner of which is adapted for the insertion of a cookin vessel.

"With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, comhinatioi'i. and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

- My improved cooking and baking device when the parts thereof are in position for use is preferably a rectangular shaped closed metal box, consisting generally speaking of seven principal pieces.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, the cooking and baking device consists of a bottom piece 1, to which is appropriately hinged back wall 2, and front wall or door 5, and side walls 6 and 7., preferably by means of a multiple of wire loops designated 1 k, 1%, 1d, and li 2, respectively, or by some appropriate hinge means. Top piece 3 and false top piece 1 are superimposedly hinged in a similar manner to top edge of back wall 2, by wire loops 14?, Figs. 2 and 3. Bottom piece 1, Figs. 1, 2, 3,-and 4 is provided w'th hole 19 to allow heat to enter the cooking compartment, but the heat is diti'used by means of removable radiator plate 13, Figs. 3 and 6, which is constructed so as to be slightly raised from floor of bottom piece 1, preferably constructed in theshape illustrated in Fig. 6, and in two sizes to fit the larger and smaller compartments hereinafter more fully described. Bottom piece 1 is also provided with parallel guides 11, 11 11 and 11., Fi s. 1 and 2, preterably integral therewith, being formed by having bottom piece 1 pressed into such shape, but said guides may be riveted or other-wise aiiixed thereto. False top l, Figs. 1, 2, and 41- is also provided with corresponding guides 11, 11, 11 and 11 permitting the insertion of inner side walls 8 and 9, when set up, best illustrated in Fig. 1. These novel removable inner side walls are each provided with series of openings 23 near the lower ed e thereof, each hole being provided with movable cover 22 riveted above the opening as illustrated inFig. 1.

These inner walls 8 and 9 are removable at will and may be inserted in guides 11 and 11 and 11 and 11 respectively to form the smallest compartment in which case a less amount of heat is necessary, or they may be removed entirely as illustrated in Fig. 3', and so make the largest compartment providing more cooking space. The openings 23 provided on inner side walls 8 and 9 permit the heat to pass between those side walls and. the outer side walls 5 and 7 respectively thereby gaining in heat retaining capacity over an oven constructed with only single side walls. Side walls 6 and 7 are each pro vided with rack holder or guide 16 and 16" respectively. Inner side walls 8 and 9 are also each provided with similar rackholder or guide 16 and 16 respectively, as illustrated in Fig. 1, upon which is placed adjustable extension rack 10, constructed of rigid wire or iron rods one half thereof beslidably held parallel to the other half by means of metal rings rigidly affixed to the other half of said rack by solder or other appropriate means as illustrated in Fig. 5, which makes it capable of being interchangeably used in the largest compartment when the inner side walls 8 and. 9 are not used, or made smaller by adjustment for use on the inner side walls by resting on rack holders 16 and 16. False top 4 is provided with hole 12 to permit the use of any appropriate cooking utensil, and thus it will be seen that three methods of cooking may 6., frying or roasting on radiator plate 13, baking on ad justable rack 10, and stewing or boiling in a vessel inserted in hole 12 provided on false top 4, Fig. 3.

Top 3 is provided for use whenever false top 4 is not to be used, and adds to the heat conservation, acting in a similar mannerto inner sides by making the top of the-device double plated. Top 3 is also provided with a convenient low handle 21, and with a catch of any known appropriate make, not shown, engageable by hook 18 provided on door 5 to assist in holding the device together. False top 4 is also provided with a similar catch for the same use. False top 4 is also provided with downwardly curved, flanges 15 and 15 integral therewith. Similarly inwardly curved flanges 15 and 15 are provided on back wall 2 integral therewith, and also curved flanges 15", 15*, and, are pro vided on front door 5 integral therewith, all best illustrated in Fig. 3. and all for the purpose of assisting in holding the cooking device together when set up for use, as well as to more effectively prevent the escape of the heat, retaining it in the cooking compartment formed by the device when so set up. Door 5 is further provided witha ven tilating hole 17 Fig. 2, near the lower center portion thereof, which may be closed by a cover .movably riveted to door 5, similar to cover 22, Fig. 1.

My improved cooking device maybe made of any desired dimensions or number of compartments, and may be constructed for use over one or more gas burners, or other source of heat. The less expensive wire loop hinges have been preferably used in the construction shown, but any other method of hinging the walls may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention, as it is obvious that variations in construction and shape may occur without departing from the principles of the invention.

The operation of setting up, using, and folding my cooking device is simple and ap parent, as follows: From the extended position shown in Fig. 2, the two side walls 6 and 7 are first raised to a perpendicular position, they are then held in such position by flanges 15 and 15 upon raising of back wall 2. False top 4 is then moved forward and over these three Walls, holding all in position by means of flanges 15 and 15. Badiator plate 13 of proper size is then placed over hole 19 in bottom piece 1, and inner side pieces 8 and 9 inserted as desired in appropriate guides, with holes 23 either closed or opened. After heating the oven food may be placed on the radiator plate, or rack 10 inserted and the food placed on it, and then door 5 is raised and latched to either top piece 3 or false top piece 4-. A reversal of this operation will spread the device out as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 1 best illustrates the method of folding. As top 3 and false top 4 are on the same hinges they are folded outward on back wall 2, which is in turn folded inward on bottom 1. Side walls 6 and 7 are folded back on under side of bottom 1 and door 5 is then folded back on them. If the device is constructed rectangular in shape as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, then room for placing the radiator plate 13 and rack 10 on the partially extended portion of bottom 1 is provided when the device is folded. Inner side pieces 8 and 9 may be conveniently placed on top or bot-- tom of the folded device, and when strapped or wrapped it will be found to be a package of compact shape and convenient size for storage or transportation. If constructed square in shape the inner sides, radiator plate and adjustable rack are conveniently placed on top of the folded device, and so strapped or wrapped. The parts of this cooking oven may be of any suitable shape, size and terial.

I am aware that prior to my invention of this improved folding cooking device, fold ing ovens have been made, therefore, I do not claim such a device broadly, but having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent', is,-

2. A cooking device having in combination, a bottom piece, a plurality of walls hinged to said bottom piece, two top pieces hinged to upper edge of one of said walls, the lower top piece being provided with flange means for holding the side walls in position and in connection with the flange means provided on the front door piece holding the device together when set up, hinge means for holding all said pieces together, and means for locking the device when set up and releasing same when desirable to knock down the device, substantially as described.

3. A cooking device of the class described composed of a bottom piece, back wall, front door, two side walls, all hinged with similar means to said bottom piece, two top pieces suporimposedly hinged to upper edge of back wall, the parts of the device being adapted to be set up in the shape of a box, and folded together when knocked down, in which operation the side and front walls fold underthe bottom piece, and the top pieces fold on the back wall, which in turn folds inwardly on the top of bottom piece, and means for holding said pieces together, substantiall; as descriled.

d. A cooking device of the character described, composed of a bottom piece provided with a multiple of parallel guides running irom front to rear thereof, a back wall piece, a front door piece, two side wall pieces, all hinged with similar means to said bottom piece at their lower edges when set up, a false top piece provided with guides corresponding with bottom piece for insertion of inner side walls, two removable inner side wall pieces, a top piece superimposed on said false top piece both being hinged to upper edge of back wall piece, means for holding all said pieces together, both when set up and when knocked down, substantially as described.

A cooking device having in combination, a bottom piece, provided with a multiple of parallel guides and an opening, the latter permitting the entrance of heat into the device when in use, two side wall pieces, a back wall piece provided with inwardly bent flanges to fit over edges of said side walls when set up, a front wall piece also provided with inwardly curved flanges to fit over front edges of said side walls when set up and over front edge of top pieces when in actual operation as a cooking device, a false top provided with downwardly bent flanges which in operation lit over the upper edges of side walls only, said false top piece also being provided with a multiple of parallel guides corresponding to those on said bottom piece for the insertion of inner side walls, and is further provided with a circular opening to permit the in sertion of a cooking utensil when in use, two inner side walls, a top piece superimpose'dly hinged over said false top piece with same means, the movable parts of the device being adapted to be folded together, and means for hingedly holding said movable pieces together either set up or folded, as and for the purpose described.

6. A cooking device having in combination, a bottom piece, a plurality of walls hingedly attached to said bottom piece, the front and rear walls being each provided with inwardly bent flanges for holding the device together when set up, two top pieces, the lower top piece being provided with downwardly bent flanges when set up to fit snugly over the top edges of the side pieces frictionally holding the device together, said top pieces being both hingedly attached to the upper edge of the back wall piece, substantially as described.

7. A cooking device having in combination, a bottom piece, provided with an opening to permit entrance of heat, a radiator plate to diffuse the heat to the sides. said bottom piece being also provided with a plurality of guides, a plurality of walls niovably attached to said bottom piece, the front and rear walls being each provided with inwardly bent flanges to frictionally hold the device together when set up and prevent the escape of heat, said side walls being each provided with a guide, an adjustable removable rack resting on said guides, two top pieces hingcdly attached to the upper edge of said rear wall, the lower top piece being provided with inwardly bent flanges to assist in holding the device together and prevent escape of the heat. said lower top piece being further provided with guides corresponding to those on the bottom piece. two inner side pieces for insertion in said guides, each of said inner side pieces being provided with a horizontal guide upon which rests an adjustable removable cooking rack, and means for bolding said pieces together when set, substantially as described.

A. cooking device having in combination, a bottom piece provided with an opening to permit entrance of heat and with a plurality of guides, a radiator plate to diffuse the heat resting on said bottom piece over said opening, a plurality of wall pieces movably attached to said bottom piece, the front and rear wall pieces being provided with inwardly bent flanges integral therewith to in holding the device together when set up, said side walls being each provided with a series of holes near top to let out heat and a series of holes near bottom to permit heat from the compartment to pass between the two sets of side walls, said front wall is provided also with a ventilating hole and cover therefor, two top pieces SUpBlllllPOSGfl and attached with same meansto upper edge oiv rear wall, the lower top piece being provided with downwardly bent flanges to assist in holding the device together when set up and prevent the escape of heat, said lower top piece being further provided with an opening for insertion of a cooking utensil and with plurality of guides correspond ing to those on bottom piece, two removable inner walls for insertion in said guides thereby making the cooking compartment smaller, each inner side wall being provided with rack guide on inner side thereof, a rniovable adjustable cooking rack resting on the rack guides on said inner Walls, means for holding said rack in various adjusted positions, a latch and catch means respectively provided near top of front wall piece and on eachiof said top pieces nearthefront edge thereof to assist in holding said device together when set up, a handle provided on upper top piece for carrying the device when set up, and movable Ineansfor Y holding the device together set up or folded,
