COMPOSITION FOR CLEANSING- ARTIFICIAL DEN'IURES AND THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN SCOTT WOLFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful provements in Composition for Cleansing Artificial Dentures and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a composition of matter intended more particularly for cleansing artificial dentures, surgical appliances and the like, and the process ofits application; the terms artificial dentures and surgical appliances are intended to cover all devices worn removably in the oral cavity, such as dental'plates, orthodontia plates, fracture splints, and obturators for til cleft palates, whether of metal, vulcanite or other material. 7
It is known that when dental plates or other dental or surgical appliances are worn in the mouth for any considerable period of time mucous and other foreign matter will adhere thereto, forming a thick, tough, slimy coating, thus creating unsani' tary and extremely disagreeable conditions. The only method of removing this coating hitherto has been that generally employed in the dental laboratory, consisting in the use of stiff brushes or felt cones with an abrasive on a lathe, necessitating the refinishing and re-polishing of the denture. The term mucous herein is that ordinarily used by dental practitioners and is intended to designate the mucin-containing secretions of the oral glands and the diflicultly removable residues thereof adhering to the artificial denture or the like.
The compound forming the subject of the present invention is a preparation by means of which the person wearing the denture or appliance is enabled to cleanse it rapidly and thoroughly and without injury to the polished surface thereof by simply rubbing it on the artificial plate or the like with a brush, a cloth or with the fingers, and then washing it off with water.
The cleansing compound comprises a mucous solvent, preferably an acid, for ex ample hydrochloric acid, and a filler, for ex- Specification of Letters Patent.
.in the form of a paste-which is the preferred forma suflicient quantity of a vehicle having the consistency of oil and preferably. soluble in. water,v for example, glycerin, is admixed therewith. The paste may be applied directly to the article to be cleansed and afterward washed off with water.
Any proportion of the acid mucous solvent, for example hydrochloric acid, may be used, it being only necessary to observe care that itbe not sufficiently strong to injure the hands in applying the composition containing it to the article to be cleansed.
The following is an exemplary formula of my cleansing composition, the proportions of which can be varied within wide limits:
Hydrochloric acid (5% solution) Sounces. Powdered asbestos "16 ounces. Glycerin 8 ounces.
The acid mucous solvent is incorporated with the powdered asbestos and a quantity of glycerin sufficient to form a paste of the desired consistency is added thereto, and the paste supplied to the consumer in suitable containers, for example, collapsible metal tubes.
I claim:
1. A pasty mass for cleansing artificial dentures and the like consisting of an inert filler impregnated, with a mucous solvent in quantity sufficient to remove the mucous from the denture, the mixture being suspended in a viscous vehicle, the cleansing mass being readily removable from the denture by washing in water without leaving residue.
