STTARY APPLIANCE FOR TELEPHONE-TRANSMITTJERS, 8w.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July e, ltmtl,
Application filed December 10, 1919. Serial No. 343,862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, SYLVAN T. Bann, a citizen of the United States, and a resldentof the borough of Manhattan, city, county,
and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 111 Sam- 'tary Appliances for Telephone-Transmitmanner as to conserve health and prevent contagion.
The invention consists in the specific construction, combinatiomand arrangement of parts described and claimed, whereby a simple, cheap, but effective sanitary attachment for mouth pieces of the character des ignated is attained; all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1, is a perspective view showing my protector as applied to the mouthpiece of a telephone transmitter;
Fig. 2, is a sectional elevation of the mouthpiece, broken away in part, also showing my sanitary attachment in sectional elevation;
Fig. 3, is a front elevation of my device, without the cartridge holder;
Fig. 4, is a perspective view of an antiseptic cartridge;
Fig. 5, is a section of the cartridge holder, taken upon plane of line -5, Fig. 6;
Fig. 6, is a front View of the cartridge holder.
M, represents the bell-shaped mouthpiece of'an ordinary telephone transmitter T, to which my sanitary shield or protector S, is applied.
p The appliance S, consists essentially of a disk shaped cap plate 8, formed with a central socket recess 8, for the reception and support of the cartridge holder 71., and with an inturned peripheral flange s ,to fit over and embrace the annular rim m, of the mouthpiece M.
. The cap plate 8, may be formed of sheet metal, celluloid, or any other suitable material; and its peripheral flange 8 may be formed with an annular bead 8 to reinforce and stifien said flange. The rim flange 8 is also split transversely to form one or more tongues s, which may be bent inward to contact intimately with the peripheral surface of the mouthpiece M, and thereby lock the shield S, in position on the mouthplece M, and sustain it against accidental displacement. The cap plate 8, is preferably formed with two of these lock tongues .9 diametrically opposed to each other as related to said cap plate 8, so as to clasp the mouthpiece M, on opposite sides thereof, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2, of the drawings, although ll do not confine myself to any particular number of lock tongues 8 in this respect.
The depression in the cap plate 8, which forms the socket s, for the reception of the cartridge holder 72,, is preferably positioned centrally of the disk, as shown (although this is not absolutely essential) so as to afford an annular exterior surface which is formed with a series of apertures a, a, which, when the device is in position on a mouthpiece as in Figs. 1 and 2, communicate directly with the interior of said mouthpiece M as shown more particularly in Fig. 2, thereby admitting of the transmission of sound waves to the diaphragm within the transmitter T.
The bottom of the socket s, is also formed with apertures a, for a like reason, and also for admission of emanations from the antiseptic cartrid e 0, into the interior of the mouthpiece In like manner the face plate of the cartridge holder h, (which may also be formed of sheet metal, celluloid, or other suitable material), is formed with apertures a a which admit air and sound waves, and also allow the escape of antiseptic emanations.
The inturned rim flange h, of the cartridge holder h, fits snugly within the side walls of the socket s, of the cap plate .9; and T prefer to provide a screw thread connection between these parts, so that the cartridge holder may be firmly and yet detachably secured in position in the cap plate 8. To this end the side walls of the socket s, are female screw threaded as shown in Fig. 2,- and the flange of the holder h, is correspondingly male-screw threaded as at h", Figs. 2 and 5. The flange of the cartridge holder 72,, is somewhat wider than the depth of the socket s, so that when screwed home thereon the body plate of the holder h, will protrude-slightly beyond the outer surface of the cap plate 8, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus exposing an edge of the holder, which is preferably milled, serrated, or otherwise roughened, as indicated at h, to facilitate finger manipulation when it is desired to remove the holder h, from the socket s, for the purpose of substituting a fresh cartridge 0, and then again screwing the holder h, into its normal position in the said socket s. The cartride 0, may be of any suitable or desired antiseptic composition of volatile character; and may contain disinfecting, deodorizing or germicidal matter, any or all, in suitable proportions to effect the sterilization of all the parts adjacent thereto, both internal and external, so as to prevent germ propagation and contagion.
In this'connection the provision for replacement of the antiseptic cartridges is an important factor, and obviates the discarding of the whole device after the deterioration of a cartridge.
Furthermore my sanitary mouthpiece protector is so simple, light, cheap and portable in character as to be available for extensive use as a means of eliminating the danger incidental to the use of telephones generally, either public, or private.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
designated, comprising a cap plate formed with a peripheral flange and lock tongue means for embracing the rim of a mouthpiece and with apertures communicating with the interior of the mouthpiece when the device is positioned thereon, and also with a socket having an apertured bottom, an apertured cartridge holder fitting in said socket in the cap plate, and an antiseptic cartridge positioned in said holder, for the purpose described.
3. A sanitary appliance of the character designated, comprising a cap plate formed with a peripheral flange adapted to embrace the rim of a mouthpiece and with apertures communicating with the interior of the -mouthpiece when the device is positioned thereon, and also with a socket having female threaded side walls and an apertured bottom, an apertured cartridge holder having a male threaded flange fitting in said female threaded socket in the cap plate, and an antiseptic cartridge positioned in said holder, for the purpose described.
4. A sanitary appliance of the character designated, comprising a cap plate formed with a peripheral flange adapted to embrace the rim of a mouthpiece and with apertures communicating with the interior of the mouthpiece when the device is positioned thereon, and also with a socket having female thread-ed side walls and an apertured bottom, an apertured cartridge holder having a male threaded flange fitting in said female threaded socket in the cap plate, said male threaded flange of the holder being also roughened externally to facilitate manipulation, and an antiseptic cartridge positioned in said holder, for the purpose described.
5. A sanitary appliance of the character designated, comprising a cap plate formed with a peripheral flange and lock tongue means for embracing the rim of a mouthpiece, and with apertures connecting with the interior of the mouthpiece when the device is positioned thereon, and also with a socket having female threaded side walls and an apertured bottom, an apertured cartridge holder having a male threaded flange fitting in said female threaded socket in the cap plate, and an antiseptic cartridge positioned in said holder, for the purpose described.
6. A sanitary appliance of the character designated, comprising a cap plate formed with a peripheral flange adapted to embrace the rim of a mouthpiece and with apertures communicating with the interior of the mouthpiece when the device is positioned thereon, and also with a socket having an apertured bottom, and an antiseptic cartridge positioned in said cap plate socket, for the purpose described.
