, with the customary fountain spittoon located at a dentists chair so as to catch and collect particles of gold and silver which go into the spittoon when the patient expectorates. rlhese particles are washed out of the spittoon by a stream of water and are at present lost on account of going down the waste pipe.
Theobject of my invention therefore is to provide a collection chamber for these particles from which they may be removed from time to time and saved for future use.
'lhe full objects and advantages 1 of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the application of ymy invention in one form,-
Figure 1 is a view mostly in vertical central section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2f-2 of Fig. Fig. 3 is a plan view partly broken away of a sealing device for the plugs with which my device is provided. o
Referring to the particular construction shown in the drawings, the trap comprises a casing 10 provided with an inlet pipe 12 and an outlet pipe 14. rlhe inlet pipe is connected to the casing by a horizontal por tion and after entering the casing is curved downwardly and then inwardly or laterally, so that the discharge end 16 is directed substantially horizontally toward the opposite wall of the casing, this end being positioned some distance above the bottom ofthe casing.
. o rlhe outlet pipe has a receiving end 18 which is directed substantially horizontally, and
this pipe then curves downwardly and outwardlyso as to extend horizontally through the wall of the casing and is then curved downwardly with the end thereof provided with a coupling 20 for connecting it to a waste pipe 22. The inner end 16 of the pipe 12 is so located and directed that the bottom Specication of Letters Patent.

portion of the chamber in the casing 10 acts asa settling or collection chamber. rlhe outer endof the pipe 12 is provided with a coupling`21l for connecting it to a tube 26 which leads from the customary spittoon at the dentists chair. rlhe bottom and the top of the casing 10 are closed by similar screw plugs 28 having flanges 30 between which the plug is of angular formation in order that it may be turned by a wrench. In order that the plugs may not be removed by unauthorized persons a metal band 32 is placed around the angular portion between the flanges 80, the ends of the band being brought together and secured between lugs 34 which areprovided with holes. A wire 36 is passed through these holes and through holes in the ends of the band 32, and the ends of the wire are secured by a lead seal Small plugs 40 and Z12 are screwed into screw-threaded openings in the pipes 12 and 11i, respectively. rlhese openings are so located in the pipes that upon removal of the plugs, a wire may be readily inserted for cleaning the pipes in case they become clogged.
rl`he operation and advantages of my invention will be obvious from the foregoing description. Particles of gold or silver which get into the spittoon are carried by the stream of water into the casing. Un account of the particular construction of the casing and the pipes, the particles settle and collect in the bottom of the casing, which acts as a settling chamber. The stream of water entering the casing instead of being directed toward the bottom thereof is instead directed across the casing at some distance above the bottom, and hence the heavy particles are given an opportunity to settle by gravity and will not be carried by the force of the stream to the entrance of the outlet pipe. rllhese particles may be removed from time to time by authorized persons upon breaking the seal and removing the plug at the bottom of the casing. At this time the top plug may also be removed and water introduced for washing out the casing.` rThe provision of the seals both for the top and bottom plugs insures against the extraction of material by all unauthorized persons. rlhe location of the small plugs 4:0 and 4:2 is such that removal of y material through the openings which they closeis so diilicult as not to be practical, and hence it is not necessary that these small plugs be proteotedby seals. The casing 10 also serves as a trap to prevent escape of 'gases therethrough'from the waste pipe.
y I claim:
A dental appliance comprising a vertically extending casing, a pipe adapted to be connected withv a fountain spittoon located ata dentists chair and leading through the upper portion of the side Wall of said eastween the top and bottom of said casing to provide a settling chamber for retaining particles of dental fillings in the lower portion of said casing, and an outlet pipe leading from the top of said casing, said outlet pipe being curved downwardly within said casing and outwardly through the side wall thereof and then being curved downwardly outside of and adjacent said side wall for attachment to a waste pipe.
In testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature.
