VALVE.
specification 0f Letters Patent.
Patented .nay e, ieee.
Application filed March 4, 1919. Serial No. 280.536.
To LU ywho/a t may concern lie it known that l, JOHN VAN IRUNT, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at city ot' New York, county of Queens, and State oi New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TValves, otu-'hich the following is full, clear, and ex; -t description.
My invention relates to improvements in alves and has for its object to produce a valve adapted to be used as a throttle valve and adjustable so that when the plug` is turned through a given angle the ports ot the valve will be more or less completely open according to the adjustment.
rilhrottle valves in certain relations are automatically actuated by means which turn the plug through a given angle so as to fully open the ports of the valve or Jr'ully close the same. There are, however, conditions when it is not desirable to have the valve ports fully opened and the object ot my invention is to produce a valve in which the iull throw et the plug, so as to bring its passage into the same plane as the valve ports, will not necessarily open those ports to a maximlun rlhe following is a description oi' an embodiment of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section through the valve casing and its ports with the plug adjusted in one position relatively to its casing;
Fig. 2 is a similar section with the plug adjusted so as to be in another position;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section or' the valve on the line 3 3, Fig. l, and
Fig. et is a similar transverse section with the plug moved axially to partially close the ports.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, l is a valve casing having a cylindrical bore. It is provided with nipples 2- for the pipes 3-3 leading 'from the ports 4*-4. 5-5 are caps for the casing and 6 is a cylindrical valve plug within the casing, having internal screw-threads 1l upon the lower cap and having a head l2 swivelcd to the valve plug so that the plug is tree to turn relatively to the adjusting member'.
When the parts are in the position shown in Figs. l and 3, the actuating member S being turned so as to aline the passage (5 with the ports eine and cause them to fully register therewith, the valve ports will be fully opened. If, however, it is desired that the passage through the valve shall not be at its maximum when the lever 9 is in the position shown, the adjusting member 10 is actuated so that the plug 6 is drawn downward so that the passage 6 can not be made to fully register with the ports lr-4l', being moved out of the transverse plane passing through the ports (L -4C. In this way the opening through the valve may be made as much smaller as desired when the lever 9 is turned to the position corresponding to the maximum. rlfhis longitudinal shifting ot' the valve plug is permitted by the sliding engagement of the angular portion T with the socket 7 (Fig. 2) in the plug. By this means the valve plug can he adjusted so as to close the opening through the valve to any desired degree, thus reducing the opening through the valve .f forresponding to the maximum throw ot the actuating lever, so that the opening through the valve can be made greater or less as desired for any given angular movement of the plug.
lVhen such a valve is used for controlling an engine it can be adjusted so that the maximum speed ot the engine will not be reached until the operating lever is moved through its entire range or the valve can he adjusted so that a speed below the maximum will he reached only when the operating lever is moved through its entire range. When once adjusted the opening' and closing of the valve in practice will be done entirely by the lever rotating the plug.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope ot the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. An adjustable throttle valve comprising a casing having a cylindrical bore, an inlet port and a discharge port on opposite sides thereof and end caps, a cylindrical plug longitudinally movable in said bore and having a passage extending diametri- Y cally through the saine and adapted to register with said ports as said plug is revolved, means ior' adjusting said plug axially so as to move said passage more or less out of the transverse plane passing through said ports Y ing a easing having a cylindrical bore,an
inlet port anda discharge port on opposite sides thereof and end caps, a cylindrical plug longitudinally movable in said bore and having a passage extending diametrically through thesame and adapted to register with said ports as said plug is revolved, an adjusting screiv, sWiVeled to said plug and engaging stationary serew-threads7 and an actuating member passi/ng through the other 3. An adjustable throttle valve compris-V ing a casing having a cylindrical bore,v an inlet port and a Vdischarge port Aon opposite sides of said casing and end caps, a cylinV drical plug longitudinally movable in said bore and having a passage extending diametrically through the same and adapted to register with said ports as said plug is revolved, an adjusting screw7 swiveled to said plug and engaging stationary screw-threads, and an actuating member passing through the other cap and connected with said plug so as to rotate therewith, said actuating member having one end extending into said plug and making a sliding engagement thereWith.
